Was looking for highly seasoned, peppered or blackened turkey deli meat...but apparently, that is not a common food item in Montreal. Does anybody KNOW where???? I can find this?? Okay, back to the review... they have all types of meat, duck, pigeon, horse & cow meat. Yes... horse meat. HUGE massive selection of cheeses. Lots of unique spices. Looks like heaven to the Gourmand.

Je suis revenue, j'ai attendu encore un peu et j'ai frappé à la porte, seulement pour que l'homme me crie, frustré, de me calmer. Alors que je tenais mon bébé, il a ouvert la porte avec un air extrêmement menaçant, s'est avancé vers moi et m'a expliqué que cette pièce était autrefois une salle pour les employés, donc qu'il avait le droit " de faire ses besoins en paix ". J'étais convaincue qu'il s'agissait d'un client, vu la facilité avec laquelle il se permettait d'être irrespectueux et intimidant -- mais non, il a confirmé être le gérant de ce commerce. Je ne soutiendrai jamais un établissement qui emploie une personne aussi exécrable. Toute femme utilisant la salle d'allaitement de ce marché devrait se méfier de cet homme : il vous fera vous sentir mal à l'aise et, surtout, en insécurité.

Coming from Rue Jean Talon, it was a shop we passed by upon entrance as we made our way toward the produce section. We ended our day a bit early and decided to do a wine night. What's a wine night without something to munch on?! My friend and I bought cheese and olives, but thought charcuterie would make this snack complete for the evening. We chanced upon the stand and upon closer inspection of the offerings, there were a few things of interest. They had a special price for the Creton terrine that evening, but we were more interested in cured meats instead of terrines. I was interested in something that was comparable to prosciutto, but unfortunately, it was only sold in bulk. Since we wanted something a little lighter, we settled on Coppa. Since we were unsure of how many ounces, the guy at the counter helped us ration out our portion based on how many slices we could eat. That was much easier to figure out, so we settled on 10 slices total. Custom packed and purchased, it was a nice addition to the evening. Should have found this sooner! They had other great selections such as Chorizo, Bacon, Salami and Figatelli. The terrines also looked yums, but it would have been too much to split between the two of us. Still, worth a look or stop by!

If you are preparing a BBQ make this a stop for sure - these are exceptional big fat tasty sausages of all kinds and flavours. Inside the shop you'll find a number of their wonderful sausages for sale, some cold-cuts, patés and other items. We had the Maple and Bacon sausage tonight, and found it delicious, cooking it the way the helpful associate suggested. The maple flavor wasn't strong but you really got a hit of bacon, I was able to see the bacon as I was eating so they don't skimp!

If you are a carnivore or happily-content omnivore, you will have died and gone to heaven when you walk in here. Staff are super-friendly and helpful and the place is meticulously clean. Prices are also very,very reasonable given the quality of meat here. Every neighbourhood should be so lucky to have a great butcher shop like Le Viandal.

I also purchased some onsite handmade sausage that looks just wonderfull. But since I was simply walking by and discovered this, from what I hear, Verdun institution I didn't have anything in mind. But the possibilities in this meatopolis are seemingly endless. I saw every possible cut of beef, veal, pork, venison, and delicious duck. They also have prepared meals and other tasty goodies for meat lovers. Seriously there is no hope for me now that I have a serious meat shop just around the corner (sorta). The service was great, helpful and friendly. Butchery is a dying art and anyone with a love of food should support their local butchers. Keep in mind that if you buy steak at your local chain store supper market is cheap quality, often very badly butchered and overpriced, while a butcher has a deeper appreciation and respect for meat. You don't have to eat offal to be a meat lover, enjoying a good quality steak is sufficient and reason enough to bypass the chain store and go support your local butcher, local fishmonger and local whatever. Make friends with the owner and you'll see the good stuff that comes from this relationship. It's like going to a bar, if you're a good tipper, by the end of the night, your drinks are free.

Seriously, walking in I suddenly felt like I was transported to the food shops I used to go to with my mom back in the 1970s as a kid in small-town Quebec. With Montreal Canadians and vintage Quebecois memorabilia, it's really not hard to imagine what a real Mom and Pop stores on Main Street used to look like before giant supermarkets and mega stores drove them out of business. This place has absolutely everything to address your poultry needs and then some. The chickens are all grain-fed and sourced locally in Quebec. I haven't tried the sausages yet but they sure looked tempting. You'll get the same quality of meat here as you would as more expensive locations at Atwater Market or Jean Talon Market - minus the insane markups. I'm glad Verdun still has many shops like these.

My favourite thing to get from here is the bambi (cerf) sausages - I can't recommend them enough! They have a wide selection of home-made sausages, and all the ones I've tried have been great. The chicken they sell is grain feed and from Quebec, so it's the good stuff. They also have a selection of cheeses and pates, which are nice to round-out a meal. Another thing I like to go there for is their marinated steaks, all of which are good (my favourite is the spicey one). They also have minced horse meat, which is great for burgers. If you're in the neighbourhood or live not to far, and want fantastic quality meats, then you need to come here.

On my visit I was happy to see they had one of my favourites weisswurst. A white sausage which is not easily found in regular grocery stores yet extremely delicious. This sausage is one of many European style that they do. Their selection actually very strong with more choices than you can really need to fill that belly accompanied with a beer while sizzling on the grill. Other ones I buy are the William douce as a regular hot dog style and the Jalapeño cheddar a bit more zipped up one. Their tube steaks go awesome with a good mustard, some pickled sauerkraut, olives and whatever other sauces your taste buds crave. Pricing here is on the higher side moderate roughly $2.25 - $2.75 a sausage. It's a franchised chain so you are paying a bit higher so both entities earn a respectable profit margin. If you're craving sauerkraut (cooked or raw) , sausages, Milka chocolates, Ritter Sport chocolates, elderberry or red current jam, specific cold-cuts from Munich, home-made pretzel bread and varieties of pickles you'll never find at Provigo then by all means, come here and stock up. There's a prepared foods counter in the back and a bakery and it's always fun to come by to see what they have on the offering. Apparently they have daily lunch specials as well. I find Europeans eat seasonally (i.e you don't get real strawberries in January...) and their foods reflect this. Autumn usually means more desserts and baked goods with apples or stone fruits for instance. Last time I came, they had some fresh open-faced plum dessert I have never seen anywhere else before in Montreal and picked up a few pieces. It was amazing. The service is super-friendly and while prices are higher than your typical depanneur or grocer, they won't break the bank either. It's worth a stop
