No it's not in Moreton on the Marsh, its in Dorset!…read more I love coming here. The church is rather pretty with some unusual stained glass windows. But this is not why I come at all, though the church is in a lovely situation. No, what draws me here is T. E. Lawrence. If that doesn't ring a bell, Lawrence of Arabia. He had a cottage near Bovington called Clouds Hill, where he apparently lived upstairs, using the ground floor to store books and firewood and beverages. He was great friends with Thomas Hardy, and several other notable people. Lawrence left the army in order to seek refuge from his reputation, and joijned the RAF under the name of Shaw, and was based in Plymouth. This seems to have not been a happy time for him, though he made friends and found a bolthole on Dartmoor. In 1932, he was mor bike riding near Clouds Hill when he had to swerve in order to avoid two teenage boys on their bycycles. He hit a tree and never regained consciousness. The boys fled in shame, thinking he was already dead/ Lawrence is buried in Moreton Churchyard. He was 39. Every year in June, a red rose arrives at his grave. No one has yet discovered from whom it comes, or whose estate it might be a legacy of. A living mystery for a legend in his own lifetime.

The main service on Sunday starts at 10am and will last approx' 1 hour followed by coffee/tea and biscuits. I have worshipped here for some 5-6 years now and have made some true friends, the Church is very welcoming and allows newcomers to join in as much as they wish be that standing on the edges and watching or jumping in with both feet. Either way you are accepted as you are. The choir is a beauty to the ears and I can say on occasion I have been near tears, nothing to do with the fact my kids are part of it, honest!!! St Peters is not a gospel/clappy Church but the more traditional style of worship but we do try to be there for families and couples as well as those who come on there own and just hope you will come back again. The Church itself is stunning, the first time I walked in I was amazed at the size of the place and how was it that having lived in Poole for more years than I wish to mention I had not been there or really noticed it before. Try it, you may just be surprised.

The Church Office is run very professionally and real effort is put into making the Church and Church Hall run efficiently and effectively whilst meeting the needs of the local community and the Vicar and his wife are amongst the most friendly and enthusiastic people I have ever met.

It is by repute the longest Parish Church in England. Simon Jenkin's book 'A Thousand Best Churches describes the Priory as 'one of the least appreciated of Grand Churches'. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicles record that in 634AD Birinus, a missionary priest sent by Pope Honorius landed in Britain, and in 635 baptised King Cynegils of Wessex a Christian. It is thought he may have founded a Saxon Prory at thuinam for his work in this part of the country. Thuinus was a fine harbour at the confluence of the Rivers Stour and Avon. There is no specific evidence of this, but it is reasonably certain that Thuinam was of sufficient importance to be listed by Alfred the Great as a fortified borough. The Domeday survey of 1086 records that there was a Priory of 24 secular canons here in the reign of King Edward the Confessor (1042-1066). In 1094, Ranulf Flambard, a chief minister of William II (Rufus) began to build a Norman church on the site of the Priory. So let us hope that the marriage last Friday will do justice to the length of time this place of worship has stood here
