And her brown bread was the best we had in Ireland. I wish I could have some right now. The location is perfect for Galway, just a two minute walk over the bridge to the center of town. It has all the benefits of being right in the city, like walking to the pubs and shops and easy access to all the city's sights, but since it's just over the bridge, it's quiet too... and we were there on Friday and Saturday nights. Our room was very comfortable and the bathroom clean. We ate breakfast looking out on Mary's beautiful garden with Galway just beyond. It couldn't have been a better experience. First, this charming boutique B&B is steps away from Quay Street--no need for a car or taxi. There are too many great restaurants and bars so close by that it's a shame I couldn't visit them all. It's also in walking distance to the bus stop that takes you to the Aran Island ferries. Sorcha Malloy, the owner and hostess has an eye for creating clean, cozy, minimalist spaces in the historic buildings that make up the Heron's Rest. Rooms are outfitted with down pillows, crisp sheets, and comfy white duvets with splashes of color from a vintage table cloth or Indian silk throw. Coffee and tea are provided, as is a rockin' crystal decanter of port for a pre-bedtime nip. The view from every room is gorgeous--swans, fishing boats, and the B&B's namesake (Arthur the Heron) float in the Galway Bay just a few feet away from your window. Rooms are stocked with robes, slippers, hair dryers, and a TV (I didn't watch the tube but noticed it was small--if TV is important to you when you travel, this place might not be for you). The bathrooms are stocked with natural bath products. Bathrooms have been renovated and are modern; showers have plenty of hot water. The two single rooms share a bath but Sorcha had plans to renovate that floor making one large room with private bath. All other rooms have their own bath. I saved the best for last--breakfast. Sorcha is a trained chef and the breakfasts were some of the best meals we had in Ireland. We started with a cheese tray featuring local cheeses, honey, and spreads. There were homemade savory scones and red currant & lemon muffins to die for. Each guest received a pot of freshly-made espresso (or tea) and a pitcher of steamed milk. Then Sorcha brought out freshly-squeezed OJ and an incredible fruit bowl with seasonal fruit (ours had kiwi, watermelon, blackberries, red currants, pomegranate seeds, strawberries--I could go on...). Local yogurt and flax were offered, too. And those were just our starters--next we chose between breakfast burritos with avocado and homemade salsa, local salmon-topped eggs Benedict, banana pancakes with creme fraiche, and a few other creatively inspired breakfast treats. Needless to say, breakfast carried us through each day until cocktail hour around 4:00. Prices were reasonable, especially given the gourmet food we were treated to. My friend and I paid $90 USD a night for private single rooms and we shared a bath. Our other friend splurged, wanting a double room with private bath, and paid around $180 (it would have been $100 a person for two people sharing). There was also free wireless throughout the inn. Finally, there are a few things I should note that didn't bother me but might bother some. Like I mentioned, don't expect high-def TV with cable; the inn is in the heart of Galway so some might find the streets a little loud (my white noise app blocked it all); and the rooms I saw were small based on what Americans are used to. Do yourself a favor and skip Galway chains like Jury's Inn or the Radisson and experience the charming Heron's Rest Inn!

When i arrived I was greeted by the owner of the BnB, Joan, who I have to say made my stay that much better. I couldn't help thinking that she has an uncanny resemblance to Meryl Streep, maybe it is Meryl incognito?? Joan told me all the best places to visit, the best times to go, the best ways to get there. She was very knowledgeable about the local area, it helped massively. The room was lovely, a good size, lovely and clean. The shower is amazingly powerful! On arrival you are asked to select what you would like for breakfast, the choice is great. From Full cooked, to poached eggs on toast, to smoked salmon and eggs which is delicious! Breakfast is served 7.45am - 9.30am, check out is 11am. Overall, I loved staying at the Periwinkle, it made my stay in Galway that bit more enjoyable, if that's possible! I thoroughly recommend it!

A bad hotel or B&B always, for some bizarre reason, reminds me of the hotel from Stephen King's The Shining... I won't name names * ahem, well known hotel in Limerick city...shudder*...but not this place - it had a lovely, warm vibe about it (the vibes are important peeps!). After meeting my bro for dinner on Quay Street, I hit the hay in my lovely comfy bed and slept like dream. I usually wouldn't write a review on a B&B, mainly due to the fact that there isn't much to say other than 'nice bed, nice breakfast!', but I was treated very well here so I think Desota deserves a mention. I was anxious about a presentation I was giving today and they allowed me to check out at a later time so I could work on it for a while, and they also gave me a hella' lot of paper so I could print off slides...I think that's pretty hospitable, and it's the little touches that makes a place like this pleasant to stay in. When I went back to collect my bags they had a bit of banter with me about how my day went, and kindly ordered me a taxi (I was too lazy to walk to the train station... it was along day... don't judge me!). I also get the impression that the people who live/work there know and like each other, which came across quite clearly. Oh, and btw, the bed was lovely, and the breakfast was lovely! One of the electrical outlets had a built in AMerican converter - so convenient! 5. Large bathrooms with Orly Kiely bath products 6. Spacious, warm lobby, and trendy hotel bar (with an impressive cocktail list). The bar was actually dead on the Wednesday night we were there, but I can imagine its lively on the weekends! 7. Free wifi was reliable. Cons: 1. Small rooms - We were actually upgraded to a deluxe room, and were still surprised by how small it was. Our original room must have been tiny! Still, this can be expected in Europe and wasn't too much of a con. My group booked 2 rooms through their website, but unfortunately they lost one reservation when we arrived. They made it right, by upgrading the other members of our group to a suite. The suite was huge, and I was jealous of the apartment-like space they had (even though it was unnecessary for our short visit)! I highly recommend this hotel! 2 stars. Some context first, so you know where this is coming from: this is my third trip to…read moreIreland. We stay three weeks to a month each time, and we've stayed in a lot of hotels across this country. This was the worst hotel experience of all of them -- and I'm writing this so the next family spending their savings on a trip like this can make a better-informed choice. We booked two rooms for four nights during the Arts Festival -- my wife and I in Room 121 on the ground floor (the far corner of the building closest to the Spanish Arch), our adult kids on the third floor. Getting back from the festival around midnight, the moment we passed the second fire door in our corridor -- where the hallway slopes downhill -- the smell of mold and mildew hit. Room 121, at the lowest point of the building, was so bad it made both of us sick to our stomachs with headaches. The room looks lovely in photos. We could not sleep in it. Here's the part that tells you everything: when I went to the front desk, the staff member knew exactly which room I was in before I said the number -- and handed me a diffuser. A diffuser. That's a workaround for a known problem, not a fix for a smell strong enough to make guests ill. The hotel was full for the festival, so there was nowhere to move us. Our kids gave up their room and cancelled the rest of their stay -- at midnight -- so we'd have somewhere to sleep. Their vacation, cut short. In the replacement room, the TV wouldn't respond at all -- couldn't turn it off, couldn't change the channel -- I finally just unplugged it until maintenance came the next day. The Nespresso machine was dead too. And the shower was stocked with two conditioning shampoos while both body wash dispensers were mounted at the tub, unreachable from the shower. Small stuff, but it all points the same direction: nobody is checking the details. We checked out July 19 instead of the 22nd -- I spent my birthday packing bags instead of enjoying Galway -- and we're still waiting on the refund for the unused nights on both rooms. We were told there's never been flooding here. Maybe the building itself hasn't -- but this area was underwater on national news in November 2023, and either way, what we smelled in that corridor needs remediation, not air freshener. Now, the two stars -- and I want to be clear about why. The second star is entirely for the people. Every single staff member was friendly and kind, from the front desk to the gentleman cleaning rooms who helped my wife with her bags on the stairs as we checked out. They comped me a whiskey for the trouble. The rooms are otherwise nice -- clean, big, well done. The A/C actually works, which is a rare find in Ireland and something we Americans appreciate. And as the Irish would say, the water pressure is class -- best shower of our whole trip. But kindness isn't a substitute for maintenance, and "I'm so sorry to hear that" isn't a refund. Friendly doesn't fix mold. Solutions do. Other things to know: the restaurant (The Yard) is gone, though the signs are still up outside. Lobby, bar, reception, and breakfast all share one combined space and desk, and breakfast is mostly grab-and-go burritos with a couple of eggs and rashers -- not the full Irish breakfast every other hotel we've stayed at here offers. Better options nearby: the Salthill Hotel (not far, fantastic, where we moved to) and The Galmont -- we've stayed at both with zero issues, real breakfasts, and staff who treat you like a valued guest. If you do stay here, do not accept a ground-floor room past that second fire door.
