We were wondering around looking confused one day trying to pick a decent scotch for a coworker. The guy came over and talked us through it, helping us to pick a 'safe' option. Who would have thought scotch varied so much. It was a big help.

By god this place is great- it has a large stock of mainly excellent stock; being the majority is great stock without a lot of the so-so filler wines you get in most places. As they say, all killer no filler. Wine is mostly at the moderate to well price end- you can find most stock ranging between $20-40, and then of course you have your other higher and lower price brackets. What i can strongly suggest, after personal years in the hospitality trade, years of buying and tasting wine, is that you want to go with the aforementioned $20- $40 pricing range. Yes, you spent a little more money, but the qaulity is far superior, and of course, this will reflect in the product itself. You can knock someone's or even your own socks off with just about any bottle in this store as such, I would highly recommend some tight fitting socks! Pay attention all, this is wine, this is good wine, this is where it's at. Fresh, clean, spacious and modern layout, with products that excel. Not in the mood for wine? You will be! But if absconding from such excellent alcoholic grape products, they have here a great range of non-commercial (i can buy that anywhere) ciders, such as the Harcourt apple and pear ciders in that cute labels and packaging. Great boutique beers that you mostly can't find anywhere else; and again, this stuff is better drinking qaulity. Finally, Melbourne wine store is located in that cool little pocket, of St Kilda Road near Royce hotel, Cafe Vue and other rad businesses. This is on the outbound side, between Domain and Toorak roads, in that funny little patch of greatness, "the only part of st Kilda road that isn't daggy, dated, boring, run of the mill, nothing special, bland, boring, insipid and really crappy."

The prices won't make you baulk either, we picked up some great bottles for under $20. If you're having dinner around the city, this isn't out of the way to pick up a great BYO option and save yourself a good $30 or so on the restaurant ticket price.

Dan Murphy Berwick is absolutely enormous and features every kind of alcohol conceivable. The thing I love about Dan's though is it bring new wine varieties to the mainstream without huge price tags attached. Dan's in Berwick features an enormous range of wines. If you want to buy in bulk the staff are happy to help you out and will always look after you price-wise too.

The staff are friendly and have great beverage knowledge and as a result they have a loyal customer base. They must be doing something right as they have their competition cut out for them with liquor barns and local retail chains alike all vying for your dollar, and still this independent retail outlet maintains it's presence in Rosanna Village. I drop by occasionally as they do have great specials and sometimes I find something new to try, plus my wine tastes better when I have supported a local business...well I like to think so anyway!

With a background in both winemaking and distilleries, he knows everything about everything. It would be a waste to simply walk in and buy a bottle without picking his brain about what suits your tastes or discovering something interesting to try. Set up as part wine store/part grocery store, one wall is lined with interesting ingredients, particularly hot sauces. They also import and sell Tequila Clase Azul. I was lucky enough to have a taste of this tequila range and it was hands down the best I've ever had. So easy to drink and even if you don't think tequila is your thing, there's a good chance you would like this one. Crazy good. A great family-owned business worth supporting.

There is gourmet produce and a cheese room. Jose is a great teacher too, so visit for wine education or help on your selection. Port Melbourne has the biggest spread of demographics from the poorest to wealthy affluent elder members of society. It is well serviced by a large Coles, Brewsters, IGA, Thomas Dux, and several liquor outlets, so it is a credit to him that they have managed to not only remain a part of the scene but to be voted as the strip's favourite in a local poll.
