The corn fritters for like dumplings and very tasty. The garlic bread was just like I would make it home and the rest of vegetable salad was very delicious. They do not have decaf coffee since they only have one coffee grinder - But I tried a couple of chicory as a flat white with coconut milk and was very pleased with the flavor and the drink it's self. The owner of the restaurant was raised on a dairy farm! She and I talked about all the problems that dairy farms and people are causing to the environment generally and especially in New Zealand with use of chemicals and the runoff from agriculture. Peace begins on the plate - and a full belly begins at Kaiaroha!

I found it expensive enough paying for my own on my increasingly limited vacation budget, but the corn-based fritter I ordered, while largely inscrutable in composition, was nonetheless satisfying. I ordered some feijoa juice not knowing what it was (apparently it's South American, but New Zealanders seem to like it as I've seen it elsewhere), an intriguing concoction to be sure. If I were looking to eat something before visiting some of the remote beaches, I would want to stop here rather than taking a chance on finding something good elsewhere.

Their chole bhatura offered an impressive array of garnishes for the chickpeas and three pieces of bread (normally I've seen two or one big one). In that world is the other thing that makes Ras Vatika so much more than a curry house - the "Snacks" and the "Chat". In fact I think this is what they do best. My most favourite is the little heart shaped Cutlet (yup weird name) whose ingredients remain largely unexplained but does involve coconut which I have a special fondness for. I'll just say that it's savoury, spicy and sweet all at once. Try it.
