I even had a great birthday party here once so I have fond memories. The facilities have been not only maintained but improved since then. Beyond being kept clean, it looks like they've updated a lot of features such as the flooring. They also use bright primary colours along the walls and pillars of the lanes. It's done in a way that serious bowlers (a club to which I'll never be invited to join) won't be distracted but it makes for a nice visual plateau (Yeah - I used 'visual plateau' when describing a bowling alley, deal with it.). The staff were quite friendly and easy to chat with. They seemed happy, which is pretty important for staff to be friendly, I find. The actual bowling? Well, let's say I'm glad that we all agreed not to be competitive at the beginning. The focus was on having fun. Which, considering I never broke 80, was just fine by me! And it was fun! The equipment and facility are well kept and clean (which is a major perk), and the staff are friendly, but one of the major problem is the price. It can get pretty expensive if you are planning on riding for awhile. Prices are set for blocks of laps and blocks of 5 laps only last about 10 minutes, which left me disappointed after my turn was up. Hot Hint: There are opportunities for group and party rates, just call ahead to reserve a time.

Now I'll be upfront with you. I don't love The Exercise. I find it boring and typically don't like having to use my muscles for any reason, let alone sweating in public. So naturally I would have assumed that adding a harness and unflattering footwear into the mix would kill the experience before it even began, but no. NO! I looooove Ground Zero and, as it turns out, I looooove rock climbing (indoors). It's also stupid cheap ($12 for a full-day pass), so you don't have to break the bank to find out if you even like it. The owner has usually been the one on-site whenever I've visited and he totally fits the part. You can tell he must be pretty hardcore when he's not 'in the office' but he's able to make that enthusiasm work even when he has to deal with n00bs like me. He'll get you set up, teach you everything you need to know, make sure you're not going to plummet to your death because of your own stupidity, and then he leaves you to do your own thing. The big walls are a blast, the slanted ones make me question if my arms originally belonged to a six-year-old girl, and the bouldering sections are a great challenge if you can't cope with the heights. Important: choose who you come with wisely. They will be the ones holding your ropes. And staring starting at the awkward crotch-bunch that happens once you're harnessed up. So...there's that.

For example, last winter, I learned to ski. This summer, my goal was to learn how to rock climb. For my birthday, my boyfriend surprised me by taking me to Ground Zero, an indoor rock climbing gym. I was excited, but sceptical that I could do it, being an avid couch potato and all. Ground Zero had a really cool atmosphere, that's the best word to describe it. They had a lounge area with a lot of great reading material on climbing, you could even enjoy a coffee while you sit and read. Other than the lounge and the main desk the place is virtually empty, save for some crash mats. After we got suited up in our gear, which was minimal and easy to put on, we were given a crash course in climbing. The rundown was thorough, but short, so we could get to climbing as soon as possible. Naturally, I made my boyfriend go first. When it came to my turn, I was nervous, but hey, the walls don't look that high. Until you get about half way up, then you feel like you're halfway to the moon. I'd be lying if I said I didn't poop my pants a little. If you're not in the best shape ever, like me, climbing can be tough. It's sweaty and exhausting work. You hit your breaking point, where you think, I can't physically go any further. Or I can't reach, I can't do it. But you have the staff there and a partner to shout their support to you. When you take a chance, push yourself, reach out, grab that final hold and pull yourself up, it's like seeing the face of God. It's so exhilarating, you feel so proud that you were able to push yourself and make it. It's one of the most amazing feelings I've ever known, I felt like I could so anything. Whether you love rock climbing or you've never been, I recommend Ground Zero. It's a great workout, it's exciting, fun and there is a very helpful and supportive staff behind you the whole way.

After weeks of the kids begging us to take them, we finally had a free weekend morning to check out…read moreGet Air. Get Air is in the old Brewdebaker's location in Burnside. Don't you notice how long-time Haligonians always tell you where something is by what used to be there? We weren't really prepared for the chaos. It was loud: there was music blaring over a sound system, kids screaming and really busy- not everyone's idea of a good time. There was a semi-organized line leading up to a counter which we got in but then realized that we had to fill out waivers for the kids. That wasn't too bad as one parent waited with the kids while the other filled out the waivers on the provided terminals. Really glad there were two of us. We learned afterwards that you can fill these out online before you even come- we HIGHLY RECOMMEND DOING THIS. Once you do the waivers you don't need out fill them out again, or so we were told. The line crawled to the front and the wait was made worse that someone (else) was polluting the air (if you know what I mean). Not the business' fault but it sure didn't make the long time waiting go quicker :(. Once we got to the counter, we then found out that even if you aren't going to go on the trampoline you need to fill out a waiver as well. By this time the line-up had grown and was almost out the door. We had some frustrating confusion when staff members gave us conflicting info which was made worse by our kids who were jumping at the bit to hit the trampolines; one staffer said we had to get back in line once we filled out the parent waivers, and another said we didn't. We ignored the former and just showed our waivers to the staff at the front desk. All that done we finally got onto the fun... The Good -There is lots to do and the place is HUGE; your kids probably won't even have a chance to think about saying "We're bored!". -There are different areas, and activities for different ages- no one is left out. -It feels safe. There are lots of staff on the floor keeping an eye on things. The Not So Good -It is expensive... you pay by the hour. For two kids (one was a junior jumper) and the socks they make you buy your first visit it was close to $40!! There isn't really anything else to compare it to in Halifax, but I know at that price it will be a once in a while kind of thing for us. We could almost have two visits at Hop, Skip Jump for the whole day for what we paid for one hour at Get Air. -They need a dedicated entrance and exit door- right now there is only one door and it gets congested with people trying to come in and out of the same, narrow place I'm sure we will go again but will try to aim for an off-peak time next visit. My daughter is already talking about wanting to have her birthday there. Hopefully we'll have a bit more streamlined pre-jump next time...

The staff were friendly and informative sharing with us the idea of their rock climbing coffee shop. There is TONS of seating here - I can see this being a great University hangout for homework or getting together to study with friends. They have a loyalty program, so if you're going to be a regular, be sure and sign up. I loved the HUGE glass window walls from the outside - really lit up and pretty at night! Oh and as a Mom, two thumbs way up for having a changeable in the washroom. Rock on Seven Bays Bouldering, Climb and Coffee on! PS They do have a few free parking spots out front to the left of the Big Bay doors where the bouldering takes place.

The sheet itself is kept in good condition. I appreciate that there is a spectator area on both the ground floor and second floor for those who want to watch. The upstairs area also has a bar and kitchen (not always open). Prices at the bar are reasonable. There is also a dance floor for private events with a fairly good sound system.
