From there, a short bus ride takes you down to Bowness. Windermere Lake Cruises offers a variety of options for getting around, from the very scenic "Red Cruise" which takes folks from Bowness pier to Ambleside and back (can get off to explore that area and catch a later boat back), to "Yellow Cruise" which goes the other direction towards Lakeside where you can catch the old steam historic train. You can also rent small boats to drive yourself around, and some other options. It's just wonderful to see Windermere lake from directly on the water! Beautiful cruise across the lake with some commentary providing information about various things along the ride. Make sure to check time tables and plan your outing. Last rides around the lake are not that late into the evening so you will want to make sure you make it back to where you want to be before the cruises stop running!

It meant that we could leave the car at Lakeside, and take the boat the length of the lake to Ambleside. Later on the same ticket we went down to Brockhole, where the children wore themselves out on the adventure playground, and we picniced, then headed back to Lakeside. An adult ticket for the day would cost £11.60 and a child £5.80. If, as I mentioned earlier, it is cold and windy you can sit downstairs, and enjoy the views just as well. When it's sunny there's competition for the best seats on deck. The commentary, on each cruise is usually interesting. There are small coffee outlets downstairs on each boat.

The Gondola is so very plush inside and you really feel important when riding out on the lake in this wonderful machine. You are very low in the water and so see the lake from a different perspective which is a fun thing to do. The Gondola itself is quite a sight and it has been restored really carefully. The snake on the front is worth closer examination and a photo. It is the best way to travel along Coniston Water so if it is available use this rather than the other boats you won't regret it.
