However, once on the phone with my son, Dr. Hoffman got frustrated when Liam would not see the light and did not agree with Dr. Hoffman's immediate diagnosis. Dr. Hoffman then became belligerent and started to curse, saying my son was "f***ed up." Dr. Hoffman said he was in fact "too f***ed up to talk to." $600 for the first and only session and Dr. Hoffman was incredibly unprofessional. I do not care if this man is God's gift to psychiatry like he thinks he is. There is no rationale to support unprofessionalism when speaking to a highly suicidal patient.

Through a City of Hope Patient Advocate, I learned about his work with previous cancer patients and their journeys with the process. His reviews scared and intimidated me, and his prices were exorbitant and OON. After asking my oncologist if he was really that good, and getting a resounding "YES", I made an appointment. I was desperate and I needed help. After multiple therapists, psychologists,mindfulnesses meditation classes, yoga, TM and the like... I was not in denial, and I knew I was tipping to the point of no return. After being sanctioned by two doctors who I trusted, I completed my questionnaire and saw Dr. Hoffman. If you're looking for warm and fuzzy, and someone to coddle you... it's likely not him. He is however one of the most knowledgeable doctors on the subject of mental disorders and every medication option or other modalities of therapy that can be effective. The DNA test which he had me take (which in 10 years no psychiatrist ever asked for) told me immediately that I had been taking SSRI's for 10 Years at a very high dose... and it indicated why they didn't work. The enzymes I'm my body metabolize these meds poorly, hence they never worked. No doctor had ever gone to this detail, and I was beyond impressed that he wanted to be sure I received the most effective medication. He also encouraged light therapy and meditation every day (which has been life changing). Between the new meds (Cymbalta and Enlyte -a prescription supplement), I have an entirely new perspective on things and am beginning to get my life back. He is a clinician and will not nurture you or hand you tissues as you get emotional if that's what you're looking for. But he's brilliant and he gives you various options for treatment and that was a game changer for me. If you're desperate and ready to change your life... I would highly recommend Dr. Hoffman. As mentioned, he is expensive and does not take insurance (I have to bill my own), but in the end... in my opinion, he's worth every cent!

Our oldest hit the teenage years at a speed that we weren't prepared for. My concern was in finding ways to minimize the amount of resentment we were building as parents, and finding ways to better communicate and bond, during this VERY TOUGH development time (Lord help us all). Kent called me and spent an amount of time on the phone with us that I felt exceeded how much time any healthcare professional had spent with us in the past. Fast forward a few months of weekly visits, and although we are far from the MAGIC cure of teenage attitude challenges, I feel confident that all of us are on the same track as far as bonding and building a healthy relationship. As issues come up, we reach out to Kent. I hesitate to text him because (1) I've never been able to reach out to a provider that way (2) I'm afraid he'll find us a burden and fire us. I'm grateful that he takes the time to reach back out to me. The process is not inexpensive, by any means; however, for us, the lifetime damage that we can cause ourselves as a family, far outweighs the financial aspect of this therapy. In Kent's (and the Center's) defense, I will say that he is active in the community, offering free blogs, webinars, events, to serve the community. I haven't personally seen Dr. Derman since 2015 but he left an indelible wisdom on me that helped me navigate my way into the right relationship, and out of the wrong friendships. It is because of our sessions back then, that I healed the relationship with my Mom. The page turned and I never had to suffer from the former version of that relationship again. The reality is, Dr. Derman has seen it all. He isn't there to just nod along and prescribe pills. He has REAL solutions for patients who earnestly want to change, and have the fortitude to. This isn't a place to talk in circles. Mean what you say, or go somewhere else. That isn't to say he is uncaring, he was very sympathetic about things I shared I experienced, but then it's time to get to work. That's what I think about his practice. He helped me uncover the problematic ways I was leading my life, and helped me delve into the core issues driving my problems. He helped me accept the things I was so scared to accept, including the fear of being lazy, shallow, and scared of pursuing what I really wanted in life. Bruce is not for everyone. If you are not ready for truth, go elsewhere. If you are ready to dig deep and work hard, go with Bruce.
