Most people come here to buy petrol (as do I) as it's cheaper than most places around here. Dyke Road is one of the main arteries into Brighton from the A27 and leads straight into the centre. The shop is great for essentials, but the range is inevitably limited. The filling station side is a franchise, so you can't use your Tesco Clubcard when you petrol. The shop is often busy with both shoppers and people buying petrol, and the queues are a nuisance is your car / bike is sitting at the pump while you are in a queue. (There's not much room to pull forward to let others in behind). One big bonus is that it is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The store has toilets with baby changing facilities, a cash-point and level access. The main downside is that the forecourt is way too small given how popular it is, so people often queue back down the road. It's also on a busy junction with traffic lights, so getting in and out is a bit of a pain (getting out to turn right back into Brighton can be a nightmare).

It's actually off a short spur just off the A284, about 100 metres south of the A27 junction, so it's easy to overlook. It's operated by Snax 24, the successor to the Heron Group, which pioneered the service station concept in the UK back in the late 1960s. The site has a BP petrol station with car wash and jet wash, that also accommodates HGVs. The Snax shop has the usual range of travelling paraphernalia, basic motoring supplies (eg oil, windscreen, wash, de-freezer spray), newspapers, magazines, snacks, confectionery, sandwiches and drinks. Amazingly, it's also licensed, so you can buy alcohol here, too. Outside there is an HSBC cashpoint (ie no fees). Petrol prices are standard for a service station - you can hunt around for cheaper prices in any of the nearby towns' supermarkets, but this is more convenient if you are travelling along the A27 and are not familiar with the area. The site also includes a small McDonald's restaurant and a 53-room Comfort Inn (listed under Arundel), which has its own small bar and restaurant. It has twin rooms with buffet breakfast available from around £60.

Some quibbles: it's really too small for the location, so queues form to get in, and then you may have to queue to pay behind someone with no vehicle but lots of groceries, which gets those waiting for the pumps a bit hot under the collar. And it's right on the junction, so the entrances and exits can get congested - and turning right out of here is a nightmare. That said, it is conveient, and the trick is to try to visit when it isn't busy.

This place used to be my local, and I've got to say, they did alright by me during their tenure. For such a small place they really have an impressive range, and although it may seem a pretty minor concern, they're the only newsagent which has never failed to provide me with my chosen brand of rolling tobacco and rizla, and really, it's the little things in life that count. The rest of the wares are fairly standard, and fairly standardly priced, with the single exception of the freezer, where the prices are so high that it's not even worth sliding the lid open to have a look. There is one thing that really makes this place stand out from the crowd however. They occasionally stock beers, quite nice ones too including Kenyan Tusker lager, which are beyond their best before date, which they sell at a discount price. I myself have tried three or four of these beers, and suffered no health consequences or been in the slightest bit offended by their flavour- these are good beers at a steal of a price. Plus, I'd gladly bet that several places around town will happily sell you expired drinks without informing you, and certaiinly without reducing the price, so good on 'em I say. Also, it's worth pointing out that if you're ever at the Duke of Yorks Cinema just round the corner, you're much better off getting your snacks for the film from Londis than the cinema itself!

The positives of The Spar though are undoubtedly that it has a good range of freshly baked goods which outdo its main competitor, the Co-Op just across the road. My flatmate who is a fiend for pain-au-raisin would religiously go to this place to pick up the tasty little delights that were still warm in the mornings and if it's anything to go by he looked a happy little bunny as he devoured them like a mythical beast. Other than the Pain-au-raisin though, there was not much that really kept me going back, except maybe some quite cheap natural yoghurt. The range of products is quite limited, and I remember being pretty surprised to be turned away because they didn't stock Pesto. Come on people, everyone needs Pesto, don't they?

Milk especially is priced substantially higher than in the big 'un up the road, preciesly because they know that people aren't going to walk an extra 5 minutes there and back or pay for a bus pass just to grab some essential perishables. Its infuriating really, as it just feels like Spar is sapping money away from the small, independent stores it neighbours, and not even providing the benefit of decent prices to its consumers. Ah well, rant over... There are some nice fresh baked foods on offer which are recommendable, and I have always found the people on the tills to be pleasant and smiley, so that's a pair of pluses.
