I got a truffle brie which is just as decadent as it sounds - although actually the truffle flavour was subtle rather than overpowering as one might fear (I personally would not fear that as I srsly love truffles). To round out my selection I got some stilton and some premier cru gruyere. When I say selection I obviously ate all the brie myself almost immediately and had the rest late. The colston bassett stilton was outstanding - a creamy stilton that is great for those who can find stilton a bit overpowering. We liked the gruyere although aren't major hard cheese fans so probably didn't fully appreciate it - I would recommend it though if you are. Finally I got some seasonal scotch eggs - featuring some kind of pigs in blankets element and they were outstanding. Slightly runny in the middle, fantastic flavour, I can't remember a better example. Despite the fact they were really busy pre-Christmas and its a tiny space, they had loads of staff so managed to give everyone a lot of time and it's as much an experience as a shopping trip.

They offer a fantastic little menu consisting of soups, sandwiches, salads and some special seasonal dishes - but we opted for some coffees instead, which were lovely. But this place is more than a cafe, The Cheese Yard also sells artisan cheeses that they buy from cheese makers all over then world, as well as and boutique wines, beers and ciders too. You can order a fantastic range of these cheeses to try with some lovely homemade chutneys and crackers. It's one of those places you could browse for hours and you'll always find something new to try. It has such a wide range of products from basic essentials at good prices to treats for special occasions. It also offers fantastic, home made sandwiches on a range of fresh breads. The owner is incredibly helpful and has always ordered us anything special that we've been after. The Roses bread is especially good. We really couldn't recommend the Hope Chest enough. I thought the ale selection was a little limited although and I couldn't work out what the microbrewery aspect was (curiously they only seem to have a wine menu even though they have an extensive amount of fancy sprits which you can't see properly). I went for breakfast, it was quite busy but got seated straight away. My latte was top class and I ordered bacon, eggs and black pudding on muffins, their most popular. We were told that the Bakewell tart is more authentic...it was a baking mistake that started it all. The shop is charming with lots of baked goodies beyond the tart. We just chose one and took it for dessert. Overall it was good but terribly sweet and not particularly to our liking. I'd try a slice if you can get one and leave a whole pie behind. It just doesn't seem like all that big a deal in the end.
