Been to Brails about 100 times over the course of the last dozen years, and I just can't and won't again. Joy is a fantastic human being, the staff typically gives a solid effort. Service is quick. Price for quantity is OK.. The food is just not good. The coffee tastes sour (under extracted), which I guess some people enjoy. They also bought out Keystone, effectively removing another local option. You can (and should) make a better hangover breakfast at home for your college friends, for under $10 and under 20 minutes. You can also continue drinking. If you want a damn good diner, go see the gals at Original House. There's a reason they have a line every single day. Brails is no more than a perpetually trendy college spot because 18 year old out of towners don't know any better. I sure didn't. read more

This is what diner food should taste like. Quality over quantity. I got the brails omelette, and was pleasantly surprised to see it folded more like a crepe than the rolled up and mixed up omelettes you normally get. Decent amount of filling, didn't over or under on the cheese, and the hash browns are extra crispy, not everyones cup of tea, but the only way I really like them. My spouse had crispy and delicious corn beef hash, and the sides of biscuits and gravy were good, albeit a little cold on the first attempt. That, mildly subpar coffee, and having to ask for my side of bacon twice, are only holdbacks from a 5 star review. Seriously, I have never had such delicious hashbrowns. I don't normally like the kind that are shredded, but these are so crispy and the ratio of crispy potato to non-crispy is absolutely perfect. They are cooked in butter which just makes them AMAZING!!! My veggie omelet was pretty good, but kinda buttery. Weird. Stopped in Eugene on our way up to Portland and was recommended by a friend to stop by Brail's for breakfast/lunch and it definitely didn't disappoint. Decided to try the Chicken Teriyaki for lunch and it was by far the best chicken teriyaki I have had to date. The owner Joy recommended putting butter in the rice and I'm so glad i did. I came here a few weeks ago right after running the epic relay and I gotta say, this was exactly what I needed. A lot of reviewers comment on this being a great hangover place.. well, it's also a great post-run place (hmm maybe it has something to do with being dehydrated and fatigued?)! Anyway, solid breakfast spot. And even though I was skeptical as to how delicious some standard hashbrowns could be, I was pleasantly suprised- they are really really good. Do yourself a favor and try them! Some warnings, however: The coffee tastes like water (if you drink your coffee black or close to it) and the pancakes are HUGEand mediocre, so consider splitting them if you want to order something in addition to them. Okay we've lived here since 1975 but we have never been to Brails. Be mistake on our behalf! We had a party of 11 on Sunday morning after a home football game. I thought no way were getting in. We put in our names and waited about 20 min. Took our seat, he handed us each a menu then served us coffee and water and took our drink order. Very prompt!! Then because we all we talking he gave us about 5 min to take our order. Plus he split up 6 tickets brought out our order hot, correct orders and then he took our cards and money to not clog up the entry way while we paid! That guy rocked! Dang should have asked his name. We were super impressed all around and will be back. Don't let the exterior keep you from dining here. We did all these years. Thought it was a greasy diner. Oh yeah they have diner sitting at the counter. We were at the 16th street location Can't wait to go back as our food was that good!! If you like crispy thin hash browns you'll be in for a treat. Best breakfast spot in town! I've eaten here since my first day in Eugene with my dad when we checked out the UO and 4 years later still come to my favorite spot. The location on Willamette St. is most popular and is huge! They have cute colored in drawings from kids of the sweet owner all by the front door and a smiling employee is always nearby to greet you and seat you. On a busy morning, and they usually are, you may have to wait a while but I assure you that wait is worth it. Especially if you ask for a cup of joe while you do! It's some of my favorite coffee around and I ALWAYS forget to ask them if I can buy a bag when I'm there!!! Luckily I live right down the street... I always get their Denver omelette with hash browns and an extra biscuit because they are heavenly. Recently, our favorite server at the 5th Street location told us they have a new biscuit recipe that's amazing and I was really stoked to try it!!! (It might be the best part.) But, I was so disappointed and I really didn't like it! However, they didn't change the recipe at the other location for some reason so if you're like me, you'll be happy to know you can head over to the Willamette St. Brail's and get em. Like I said, I really think this is the best breakfast spot in town. The food is consistently good and the veggies inside the omelette are fresh and crunchy. They don't just serve breakfast and have a whole host of food items you can get. I only assume they're wonderful by the looks on everyone else's face and the plates they've licked clean. Today was my first trip to Brail's. I won't be going back. I read reviews on Yelp before going to breakfast today and I expected something more/better from what I read. Obviously many people like this place, but I can't figure out why. The seating/walking space is cramped, which creates a loud and boisterous atmosphere. It isn't conducive to conversing with friends, let alone the person sitting right next to you. Because it's so loud, everyone has to raise their voices above the noise, which makes it even louder. The kitchen has windows open at head level where guests are seated so you can hear all the banging around in the kitchen while you're there. The place was very busy, which is great for them, but so much so that I felt crowded while eating and rushed to leave for others to have their turn. Due to the amount of guests present, I don't feel we had the greatest service. I am not even sure who would claim our tip because we were served by no less than 4 people throughout the course of our time there. The restaurant specializes in diner breakfast food, so I knew what to expect and was even looking forward to my meal. I ordered the Spanish omelet which is pretty simply a cheese omelet with mushrooms, green pepper and tomato. It is served with salsa, sour cream and a side of their "famous" hash browns. The omelet didn't have horrible taste; it hardly had flavor at all. The hash browns were nice and crusty on the outside (the way I like them), but undercooked and mushy in the middle. At best, the food was muted and boring. I could have lived with boring, but unfortunately, I have also been suffering from stomach upset since we ate there about 5 hours ago. Blech! I can't understand the hype around this place. I definitely feel it to be grossly overrated. read more

If you're looking for a delicious, basic, inexpensive breakfast this is the place to go! There's a decent variety of food to offer, I recommend the chicken fried steak, and full coffee bar options from the coffee shop. Can get extremely busy on weekends, especially on Duck football home games, but there's a lot of tables so the wait isn't too terribly long. My standard order is a Denver omelette. The last two times I ordered a Denver omlette at Brail's (which also coincides with the times I visited after their renovation), the omelette was runny and not appetizing. The waitress admitted that the chefs, to get more orders through faster, no longer grill the vegetable fillings before putting them in the omelette. This means the moisture isn't cooked out of the veggies before they are put in the omelette. Bottom line - they are ok but I can't handle a wet omelette - it gives the impression that the eggs are undercooked and that makes me gag. I think they've traded quality for speed. read more

I've been going to Braile's on and off for close to 20 years and they're still as good as ever. Joy's the sweetest funny little lady, and always makes you feel like you're in your mom's kitchen - she's been known to feed people directly from her own plate, while you're ordering and she's eating her own breakfast. The noodle bowls are really good, as is the spicy pork omelette, and I'm partial to the Joy's Special but can no longer even finish half of one since I'm not a starving student any longer.. The waitstaff are friendly and remember what you like, although my one complaint is that they're usually slow to give/refill you a soda if you order one with breakfast, since they have to go into another area to fill it. read more

I heard rave reviews of this place and decided to try it out for lunch. I ordered a simple cheese burger, not rocket science. I received a delightful looking burger and once I cut it into halves, the burger almost jumped off the plate because it was so rare. Really? I notified the waiter and as I waited for the new cheeseburger to arrive I watched the waiter take the garbage container from under the front desk and went outside to the large garbage bin. When he returned, he continued to mess with the cash register and not once walked to a sink to wash his hands. In fact, the gentleman sitting across the room from me was served a plate of food without knowing the waiter never washed his hands. How disturbing is this?! This neglectful behavior at this place turned me off from eating the cheeseburger that finally arrived at my table. I just couldn't do it, knowing the same waiter still hadn't washed his paws when he served me. Thus is the second time I've ever been here, and after today I won't be back. They were packed, resulting in us getting out at a table where we had to keep getting up to let other people at the two tables next to us leave their table, this was inconvenient for all three of us at this table. The food I received was poor quality at best, I had to send the hash browns back because when they originally arrived at my table, they side they cooked was barely brown at all. When my food came back to the table my eggs had gotten cold, as did my bacon. Then my "toast" had to be sent back since it was literally bread with butter on it. I was charged for an additional side order of toast for this- even though it was their fault. By the time I got my toast I had already finished my poor breakfast. I won't be back, service was poor (waited 10 minutes for a coffee refill, waiter seemed more preoccupied with other tables). It was obvious that they didn't have enough wait staff, as other tables were also complaining that they felt forgotten. I had high hopes for my meal after the last time I was there was stellar! Sadly today's experience has settled the fact that I won't be back, I'd rather spend my $ at a place with consistency. read more

Brail's doesn't try to pretend to be anything it isn't. It is what it is: solid, never spectacular, always consistent diner-style food. They have plenty of seating so service tends to be fast. The atmosphere is as simple as the food. For breakfast I enjoy their chicken fried steak. It's juicy and flavorful and cooked well. Their pancakes and waffles leave something to be desired, but if you're not discerning they're fine. Their burgers have a decently flavorful patty, if maybe a bit dry. They use super-salty yellow american cheese, which some people are a fan of. The onion rings are definitely a highlight. In short, I enjoy getting a weekend breakfast here every once in a while because they're convenient, but they're nothing I'd go out of my way to get. read more

Well....... The sausage was tasty. Took my son to a spring break is over breakfast based off reviews he's heard of he picked the place. We both couldn't have been more disappointed. He ordered the waffle sampler with eggs scrambled, and sausage. The sausage had good flavor, I had to really cajole him to get him to trade one of my overly burnt, and tough as jerky bacon strips for a sausage. Usually not such a tough sale. The waffle was raw in the middle eggs were a combination of rubbery and stringy with bits of uncooked goo. Aforementioned sausage was tasty. I had the French toast sampler my eggs just as stringy and gooey as his. Inside of my French toast was still just bread soaked in an egg mixture with horrible bacon that could crack a tooth. I think they just cooked everything at an incredibly high heat and figured we wouldn't care as long as we got it fast. Which surprisingly we didn't get it fast at all. Looking for tasty biscuits and gravy? Well, look elsewhere, my friend. You won't find it here. I can't honestly say if the biscuits were any good, but I can tell you one thing: the gravy is NOT. This is the first time I've had sausage gravy that is literally sweet. Yep, sweet. I know! I was surprised, too. I've lived in the valley for years, and have always heard good things about this restaurant, especially their breakfasts. They've won several Eugene Weekly "Best of" awards for their food. I've been craving biscuits & gravy for awhile now, and thought I'd treat myself, using one of the delivery services available. I can't believe I wasted my money that way. My disappointment was in no way the fault of the delivery service or the driver. I didn't expect the food to be piping hot, but I sure didn't expect what I got. At first I thought the sweetness might be related to the paprika, but this was sweet throughout, not just the bit that had paprika on it. To be fair, the bacon was delicious. Everything else went in the trash. If you can't make something as basic as a white sauce with sausage, well, maybe you're in the wrong business. It's always a joy to see Joy! Brail's is an old school diner experience and people not giving them a 5-star review are just not understanding what this place is trying to be. Their best overall item is the waffle with fresh strawberries and whipped cream. It is perfectly prepared and the best waffle in Eugene. Don't bother with the bacon waffle--while it is good, it isn't comparable to the standard aforementioned waffle. Their breakfast is on-point. Their Korean noodles are also delicious. They even have Hawaiian loco moco. I appreciate how they make everyone feel at home. They even have a dedicated table at the front for folks in wheelchairs so they can get the same good service they deserve. Don't be shy, give Brail's a try! read more

This place is everything a breakfast place should be....good, quick food, friendly waitstaff and laid back, comfy atmosphere. I checked the reviews to see if there was any vegan options, and they said there were options. We were sat down (pretty quickly) and given a few moments to decide what we wanted. Everyone else in my party ordered and I asked our server what vegan options they had, she said they could make veggies tofu and hash browns, which was fine. She continued to ask if I ate teriyaki to which I responded "sure that's fine". She said they had a chicken teriyaki that was 100% vegan, and then continued to say that they had bulgogi that was really good and that I should try it, all in the same spiel of information. When the bulgogi came out, it looked very suspicious and not vegan whatsoever. I asked my boyfriend to try it, and the verdict, not vegan. A different server came and we told her that we were previously told us that the bulgogi was vegan (I made sure with everyone else in the table that what she said sounded like the bulgogi was vegan). They took away the bulgogi and got me the tofu and veggies which was fine. They brought out and eggs Benedict, which no one ordered and also forgot to bring someone's pancakes. Our server even ensured us that she owed us pancakes (that was ordered), but never showed. Our server was nice and I enjoyed the kimchi, but the food was nothing really special, the misinformation, and the subpar service was why I gave this place two stars. I wouldn't suggest this place, but if I have to go now I know to only get tofu and veggies with a hash brown. read more
