My grandfather, who was suffering from dementia, developed severe bedsores--an unmistakable sign that he had not been moved or repositioned for weeks. According to clinical guidelines, individuals at risk of developing pressure ulcers should be repositioned at least every 4 to 6 hours. For sores to become as advanced as his, basic care protocols were clearly neglected for an extended period, causing him avoidable pain and suffering. With my grandmother, there were repeated issues with oversight. On multiple occasions, aides assigned to her care were found sleeping when they were supposed to be monitoring and assisting her. I understand that my grandmother wasn't always the easiest person to deal with--she could be difficult and wasn't always considerate--but that doesn't excuse neglect or the lack of basic attentiveness. Seniors in care facilities deserve to be watched over, not ignored. After she passed away, dealing with the facility to retrieve her belongings was another exhausting and disheartening experience. I made multiple phone calls and finally spoke to a few people who assured me they would leave her things at the front desk for pickup. Not only did that never happen, but it became clear they wanted nothing to do with helping us--despite providing multiple confirmations that they would. All I was asking for was a simple courtesy: to have some of her clothes placed in a bag so we could bury her in them. Being met with indifference at such a vulnerable and grief-filled time was gut-wrenching. Something so straightforward shouldn't have been treated like an inconvenience. These issues point to systemic administrative failures, including inadequate staffing, disorganization, and a complete lack of compassion from management. Families deserve better than to face added stress and heartbreak when their loved ones pass. Please, if you are considering this place for someone you care about, think twice. Seniors deserve dignity, respect, and care--none of which we received here.
