Since hosting the infamous Winter Olympics of 1936, the resort town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen has global name-recognition. We had terrible visibility the weekend we visited, but from what we tried, the terrain seemed plenty varied and the facilities good. For a medium-small mountain, there are more hüttes than you'd expect, so your food (and beverage) options are quite varied. There are two base areas with parking, one for beginners a few kilometers south of the gondola base. Like all European resorts, there is no American-style base lodge, just a parking lot, ticket counter, bathroom, and a brauhaus/gaststätte. Parking was plentiful at both base areas, but there is no shuttle between the two, so make sure that you end up at the right one at the end of the day or you are going to be taking a very long walk in your ski boots! read more
