What an incredible hidden gem! My husband and I are visiting the Catskills and were searching for dinner places. We discovered this place thanks to a lovely bookseller at Briars & Brambles. This was the perfect comfort meal for my birthday. Clean self seated tables and order at the counter. The service was fantastic. The owner/chef came by to check in with us. Everything came out super fast. Reasonably priced, especially compared to the area. Very casual relaxed vibe. The star was the sugar shack mac and cheese (recommended to us). It was maple syrup, brown sugar crumble and bacon with mac and cheese. Definitely unique and well balanced. It's quite sweet and savory but super unique. The chicken tenders were some of the most flavorful fresh ones I've ever had. Like you think chicken tenders are basic but this was incredible. Also thanks to the staff for letting us do a side of hush puppies (it was only part of the Friday fish special). The shrimp basket and fries was a large portion and delicious. Love that you can get unlimited sauces for the food at $.31 cents a sauce. Alcohol is served and reasonably priced. Loved the non alcoholic fresh drinks. Husband had an Arnold Palmer (N/A) that was made fresh. We'll be talking about this meal for a long time. read more

Was hopeful that this local spot would check all the boxes, but it was hit or miss. With some vegetarians in the group, we thought the options looked promising. The smashed burgers and salads were tempting. You order at the counter in this bustling little space and grab a table if you can. We ordered the vegetarian chopped cheese which has a strange seasoning on the soy curls; the chicken tenders were a hit; the baked mac and cheese was gobbled up; the fries were near perfect; but the veggie burger was blah. I make smashed veggie burgers at home, it's not hard to flatten the patty and add some seasoned salt. But this burger had two bland patties, a slice of tomato, and some wilted lettuce. Very sad. So although there were many happy meat-eating customers, they could definitely improve upon some of their vegetarian entrees. read more

Brave the Flames is a welcoming and laid-back spot for burgers and more such as chicken and seafood. After reviewing the menu, you place your order at the counter and seat yourself. Be sure to grab a carafe of water and cups at the bar. I went with the BTF Famous Onion Smash Burger ($14.35). It comes with cooked onions as the name suggests, jalapeños, mild cheddar, and garlic white sauce. It's easy enough to request to remove the onions and/or jalapeños. Each burger consists of two 1/4 lb patties which are prepared medium well, no changes there. These smash burgers were truly smashing! We also shared a basket of fries ($8.20), and they were piping hot and perfectly salted. I believe that every smash burger is a good burger, but not all smash burgers are created equal. Brave The Flames' rendition is exceptional. It's crispy, juicy, meaty and juicy again in all the right ways, absolutely loaded with jalapeño and onion flavor. A true delight. The lamb platter was also very good, great portion and flavorful ingredients. This was an unexpectedly great find for a lowkey and delicious lunch. read more

A few friends and I stopped here while in the area for the weekend. We decided to go here because one of my friends is vegetarian, and this spot offered the most options in the area. The menu has something for everyone, from burgers, to chicken platters, to vegan cheesesteaks. All of us thoroughly enjoyed our food. The best part was the atmosphere and service. We were able to speak with the owners, and they were both extremely friendly and made recommendations on what to order. The price was also great! Don't even know where to start! The gorgeous art nouveau tiles and wallpaper that were kept from another era? The amazingly friendly service? Really, it should be about the life-changing smashburger and fruit soda spritzer - I would drive to the Catskils just to eat that meal again. WHAT A GEM! After seeing this spot had the BEST reviews in downtown Tannersville (AND after a couple of disappointing dining experiences at nearby establishments) my girlfriends and I came into Brave the Flames. We were INSTANTLY charmed as we claimed some of the only seats left at the end of their dinner rush - 4 stools at the bar. We were greeted by owner, Chris, who endeared himself to us immediately. After some entertaining (and educational) banter, we got to business. Without knowing the smash burger is what this place is literally known for, I ordered it - which is strange as I RARELY eat red meat and haven't ordered a cheeseburger at a restaurant in over 20 years! HOLY MOUTH-GASM - it was incredible! Juicy, cheesy, and packed with flavor (get it with the onions AND jalapeños). I'm still thinking about it... Needless to say, we returned EVERY night for the remainder of our long weekend, for both the delightful company (thanks Chris + Alivia) and the burgers! read more

I'm surprised there's no reviews for Brave the Flames yet because there are several on Google. Their menu has a variety of American and Greek dishes, and I got the Kebob platter alongside their "famous" hot chocolate. The platter came in a huge portion so it was a good value meal. I don't think the dish was particularly notable -- it had a nice variety of vegetables, the rice was flavorful, but the meat was kind of dry and not that flavorful. The hot chocolate was really good though with the whip cream and chocolate flakes on top being a nice touch. The restaurant is decorated with a more rustic vibe and you go up to the counter to order. Overall, if you happen to be in the area and are feeling extra hungry, Brave the Flames will give you a good bang for your buck. read more

Our family of 7 visited Brave the Flames this past weekend. Oh my goodness, the food was incredible! I will begin with the service, this is a order at the counter establishment - but everyone we dealt with was great and so friendly and the food and drinks came out very quickly. The chicken fingers were the best I have had in my life (and I am 58 so I have quite a few chicken fingers under my belt lol) and I loved all of the choices of dipping sauces. My husband had the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich and raved about it. My daughter in law loved her Mac and Cheese and it looked absolutely delicious and creamy. One of my sons is vegan and he had quite a few options to choose from which is not only unusual but very refreshing. The table next to us got the burgers and the burgers looked TO DIE FOR. We get up to the area a couple times a year and we will definitley be back! Had we went earlier in the weekend, we would have revisited while we were there.
