BTF Famous Onion Smash Burger ($14.35) and French Fries Basket ($8.20)
    Lisa H.

Brave the Flames is a welcoming and laid-back spot for burgers and more such as chicken and seafood. After reviewing the menu, you place your order at the counter and seat yourself. Be sure to grab a carafe of water and cups at the bar. I went with the BTF Famous Onion Smash Burger ($14.35). It comes with cooked onions as the name suggests, jalapeños, mild cheddar, and garlic white sauce. It's easy enough to request to remove the onions and/or jalapeños. Each burger consists of two 1/4 lb patties which are prepared medium well, no changes there. These smash burgers were truly smashing! We also shared a basket of fries ($8.20), and they were piping hot and perfectly salted. The woman who took our orders was very nice, and a guy who may have been the chef/owner stopped by our table to check on us. When in Tannersville, Brave the Flames!

I believe that every smash burger is a good burger, but not all smash burgers are created equal. Brave The Flames' rendition is exceptional. It's crispy, juicy, meaty and juicy again in all the right ways, absolutely loaded with jalapeño and onion flavor. A true delight. The lamb platter was also very good, great portion and flavorful ingredients. This was an unexpectedly great find for a lowkey and delicious lunch.

The food was exquisite and a great deal. Way underpriced for the level of food it is. Chef Arquette has his creative influence throughout the menu and the facility. An absolute gem in the Catskills. The original smash burger was the best I ever had. A must visit!!!

Build your own gyro with falafel and "all the works" for toppings and sauces

I am obsessed with this place. Not to be dramatic but I think about the falafel gyro all the time and get it almost every single week. It's delicious, healthy, and you can tell the ingredients are fresh and good quality. My family has gotten the burgers before and really enjoyed those too. The portion sizes are great and the staff is very friendly. 10/10 would recommend!

We were seated immediately in a very cozy booth, and the server was friendly and helpful. We had the fondue, of course, with apples and veggies added on. We shared knishes, and then each had a cup of soup. Everything we tasted was delicious, exactly the kind of warming, comforting, stick to your ribs food you want after a morning hike. The one thing I wasn't wild about was that they charged for each drink refill, but the server was attentive and the fondue was so good that I can definitely forgive that.

But several awkward minutes passed and another party came inside before anyone greeted and escorted us to a table. Oddly, a runner walked by the entrance a few times but didn't acknowledge us and seemed to avoid eye contact. Prices were were a hair higher than expected, but thankfully the portions were filling. I went with the tavern steak sandwich ($22). The fries were the steak kind but not too fat and wedge-y. There was a totally reasonable amount of Muenster and steak, and I found that the sandwich didn't really need the accompanying steak sauce. The mac & cheese ($14) was a delightful appetizer made with a whopping five different cheeses! Last Chance mentions both antiques and cheese in its name so we had to investigate both. Instead of a separate shop, the antiques are all around the restaurant, and our server said some are for sale and some belong to the owner's private collection but he seems possibly open to offers. The cheese and gifts are in an area on the other side of the bar, with the cheese behind a counter. I thought the cheese collection would be larger and have more NY options, but it was still a solid selection. If you plan on purchasing any candy or other treats after your meal, just let your server know so you can take your bill over there.

This is a haute cuisine place that is masked by the casual dining atmosphere. Seriously: top notch chef, original recipes, a core dedication to quality seafood, paired with a fresh fish counter and some prepared food to go. We usually go for something special, but tonight I decided to get an old childhood standby, fried clams (the Boston Basket) and the fish burger sandwich. I did not expect either to be as transportive as they turned out to be. The fried clams were as delicately done as I've ever had: not crispy, but not too floppy, with excellent breading. And while I prefer my clams naked, we tried all three of the dipping sauces -- a remoulade, tartar sauce, and cocktail sauce. Now normally I loathe cocktail sauce and can take tartar sauce or leave it, so I figured we'd eat up the remoulade and ignore the other two. Still, I gave them little nibbles. Man! The cocktail sauce was like no other I've had, with a heavy hint of horseradish and a far fresher flavor than I've ever had. Then the tartar sauce -- genius! It had a delicate spicing, with capers providing a floral backdrop. That was only a preliminary, as the fish burger proved to be complex, with hints of multiple kinds of fish, and a fennel-based spicing. I ended up having that afterglow, as if I'd had a couple of cocktails and was sitting next to a fireplace, that is the hallmark of truly fine food at an advanced level. We also had the usual outstanding service, attentive without being pushy. I seriously think Hooked should consider splitting into two restaurants: one where the ambiance is upgraded to match the high caliber of the food, and another cheaper one that is strictly fast casual and takeout, and they'd more than double the business. There is a restaurant back where we come from in California, Turtle Bay, that did this with fine dining on one side and the quick, simple, and affordable food on the other side, with a big shared kitchen between them but with completely separate ambiances. That way I could come back more frequently, and still have the original Hooked for special occasions!

Now the downfall, the chicken sandwich. I did notice other plates coming to tables looking like the fryer temp. is too hot, or cook time was too long. Some fish fry that came out looked quite dark as did my chicken, as you can see! A slight burnt taste was evident. It had good flavor under that burn, and the chicken was close to not being juicy, almost dry. The place is clean, and if not for the location, I would sit at the bar and have the raw bar! Something very important to me that hit me the instant I stepped through the door, if you're looking for a great shot of A/C on a hot day, not here!!! Barely got comfortable from the almost 90 degree day on a bike, and then worked up a return of sweating as the place filled up.

We were not disappointed. We were seated promptly by our lovely hostess, and Shaun immediately came over to recite specials and to take our orders. He was attentive and we knew we were in good hands! We started with the Dr. Fox Cocktail: Angostura bitters, Bulleit Rye, Apple Liqueur, Dry Curacao, and Sweet Vermouth, which was perfect. It was accompanied by a hummus trio to spread on the bread. There was also a delicious foccacio. Next we were served a perfect salad, delicately dressed, and what made the salad so delightful was that the lettuce was torn into manageable pieces. A pet peeve of mine is large lettuce leaves that are difficult to wrangle, and this was not the case here. There were also tiny bits of cauliflower that gave the salad a nice texture and crunch.  I had the Stuffed Artichoke and my husband had Shrimp Gamberi on an Arugula salad. Both were substantial and beautifully seasoned. We had two glasses of an Argentine Tomero Malbec. It was a generous pour. For the main course, I had Polla al Limone (Lemon Chicken) over spinach. A simple dish done well. My husband had the Halibut special, a classic Mediterranean baked halibut with tomatoes, capers, and olives. So good that he finished it all...a rarity for him. (The halibut was pricey and it would be appreciated if the price was mentioned when the specials were gone over. Perhaps we should have asked.) We finished with a Sorbetto al Lampone, a tart raspberry sorbet in a dark chocolate shell and sliced.  And as we left, our sweet hostess brought over Lucianno, the most adorable puppy, to send us off with puppy kisses! We definitely will be back...especially for the wild boar ragu over pappadelles. One nitpicking observation. The entrance to the restaurant was a tad shabby. We mistook it for the service entrance. It needs to be spruced up to match the superb food inside!

Orange is usually my go-to if it's on a menu and that night they had one option--slightly tangy and tart while still very smooth... My jumbo scallops were tender and surrounded by what seemed like rings of flavor...the center was creamy local corn, then leek & bacon ragout, and lastly a perimeter of basil pesto.
