The building housing the Antique Mall in "downtown" Union City (Columbia Street) is known as the "old Kirshbaum building." For those who crave a dose of nostalgia, it's like stepping in to a time capsule with the tin ceilings, old glass cases and beautiful wide, carpeted stairway. I most often turn to the Mall when I'm looking for something in particular, for instance, my white 1950s wooden dining room table or skeleton keys I once used to make earrings. However, if I just want to have a good hour of moseying fun, my legs will take me in. The sad thing, in my opinion, is that my neighbors and fellow Union City-ans don't realize how lucky we are to have this beautiful business in our town. I more often hear of people turning to Target and WalMart for their furniture than buying something that not only has character, but is equally as cheap (not to mention the reduce, reuse, recycle aspect;). Grateful to have this charming and beautiful business in my hometown - I highly recommend stopping in if you're in the area.

First off, you will find a vast and constantly changing selection of antique and vintage home furnishings and decor- cabinets, hutches, shelves, accent tables, kitchen ware, a dizzying array of baskets in all shapes and sizes - which the the kind owners gather as they hunt estate sales, flea markets and the like. Most of these pieces are American made, all are handcrafted and one-of-a-kind. Some will have been lovingly restored by proprietor Damien - who also crafts new pieces and can do so to your specifications! We recently bought a house in the area and are slowly making it our very own. I'm in need of a short shelf/hook rack, which might easily be obtained as a cheap piece of crap from Walmart mass-produced in communist China - or I'll pay a few dollars more and have one handmade right here in Ohio. Take a guess which I've decided on. In addition to wood crafts, proprietress Shannon makes personalized T shirts, coffee mugs and koozies with a great selection of designs to choose from. Still don't see something that grabs you? No worries, bring your own design and she'll make it happen. They say you can't always get what you want but that doesn't seem to apply here! Something here for everyone and great gift ideas too. Any unscheduled closing (doesn't happen often) is posted on their facebook page, so if you're making a special trip might want to check that first- or call. My other tip is, if you see something that grabs you- grab it now! I highly recommend you get over to the Workshop.

This antique store has a hidden gem secret.....inside is a cream parlor that serves the best ice…read morecream in the Midwest. The ice cream is handmade by Sister Cleo, a 91 year old nun. All the ingredients are made by Cleo from scratch. For example, she extracts sassafras roots for the root beer flavor in her root beer ice cream. She offers about a dozen flavors, including a special flavor each month. My husband had an ice cream cookie sandwich, which he devoured so fast I couldn't get a photo. I had a cone filled with caramel ice cream which was creamy and of course, heavenly. So here's the best part...I went outside to eat my cone in their little garden. Sister Cleo was just arriving to work in her electric mobile chair from the nearby convent and we chatted. She is charming and interesting. So, there are antiques in the little shop. Jim, the clerk was kind and invited us to look around. They carry a nice selection of primitive and mostly American antiques. There are clocks, paintings, ancient kitchen ware, pottery, local artifacts and so much more. Prices were a bit steep for me, but I enjoyed looking. A tempting Circus poster caught my eye. So no matter where you are in the world, jump in your car, get on a plane, hop on a boat, get to Oldenburg, Indiana and try one of Sister Cleo's ice creams. And I hope you get to meet her. There is free street parking and the building is accessible.

Red flag #1. As we walk through the store looking at what they had to offer, we notice the woman behind the desk following us and circling us. There were several other customers that did not experience this treatment. This in itself was not an issue. When I had made my way towards the back of the store with my boyfriend after examining everything else, the woman had followed us and practically ran after us. She came up to us and said "you need to stay in the front where I can see you." I had noticed a sign on the door regarding minors unattended in the store however my friends and I are all in our early 20's. This is completely unacceptable treatment. All parts of the store should be welcome to all patrons regardless of their age or how they look. I firmly believe that we were treated this way because of our appearance as we are young people with facial piercings and my boyfriend is a minority. I must note that up until this point we had been completely respectful costumers and were not causing a disturbance whatsoever, simply looking at antiques like anyone else. The only difference between us and the other customers who were not treated this way was our appearance. The woman on staff what a short older woman with a blonde bob. I surely hope this issue is addressed so no other young people experience this treatment when shopping at this establishment. Antiquing isn't just for old people. (:
