For my 400th review on Yelp I wanted to wax lyrical about something that was quintessentially Brightonian. Having already written about the two Piers, the beach, great eateries like Bills and Terre A Terre and a cluster of fiercely gay businesses, I decided to opt for the understated Brighton Fishing Quarter Gallery.
A small arch on the sea-front, it's open all year round - whether it's blissfully sunny outside or blowing up a storm. I love popping in when I'm going for a long walk on the beach and am always pleasantly surprised by the diversity of the work they exhibit. So far this year, they've shown abstract seascapes by Julie Anderson, 2D and 3D work by Trojan House Arts, breath-taking landscape and flora photography by director Gill Copeland and cool knitwear and home-ware by Fiona Howard and Kate Jenkins. My personal favourite however, has to be the photography show by Americana fanatic Richard Heeps. If I had more wall space I'd have bought half a dozen of his prints. As it is, I settled for 24x30cm print called Some Like It Hot.
And yes, it does feature a certain Marilyn Monroe in there somewhere! read more
