Brighton Open Air Theatre, or BOAT, was opened last year after a huge fundraising campaign in Memory of Adrian Bunting, a local writer and director who sadly lost his battle against cancer but who had always dreamed of setting up this kind of project in Brighton. I was fortunate enough to know Adrian so it is a privilege to see this project come to fruition.
The season runs from May to September and is primarily used for theatre productions, but has also played host to music, comedy and spoken word events. It has a capacity of just over 400 and is formed of eight artificially turfed terraces.
They are currently showing a number of performances related to the festival, but having no artistic director they are open to all types of performances.
I watched a small school production here a couple of weeks ago and we were blessed with good weather. The atmosphere is very family friendly and people are free to bring their own food and drink as there is nothing sold at the venue.
This is a really wonderful space and I hope that they continue to be successful for years to come. If you get a chance to watch a production here, I would highly recommend it. read more
