The ethos is basically local local local! It's a really lovely alternative place to pick up freshly made bread (from the Lighthouse bakery) and organic fruit and veg. At the moment there is a stall selling and renting (!) live Xmas trees in pots and there is also a great selection of Christmassy gift ideas. You can even pick up sustainably sourced logs and kindling for lovely winter open fires. The market is open every day except Sunday and if you live in the Hanover area it's a really great resource. Even if you live further afield, Muesli Mountain is worth a trek. It is an inspired project with a lovely atmosphere- one of those little gems that makes you so grateful you live in Brighton.

Run by a team of Hanover residents, it's an open market that aims to provide other locals with a space to meet, chat and learn how to be more sustainable. There's fresh organic fruit, salad and vegetables from local farms and allotments, gorgeous bread from Lighthouse Bakery and store cupboard essentials like pasta, rice, flour and cereals. They also sell local seeds and plants, cleaning products and Ecover refills. As a girl with a sweet-tooth, my only grumble is the lack of fresh and tasty, locally baked cakes!

Stalls here are fixed mini-shops rather than traditional outdoor type market stalls. Stalls here cover a wide range. There are traditional food market stalls - selling fish, meat, cheese and more. Then there are a couple of general, messy second hand bric a brac stalls. There are stalls selling plants and flowers, and at certain times, Christmas trees, two second hand bike shops, and a free book exchange. I would love to see the place revived by the council, perhaps with some temporary stalls to mix things up a bit, and longer opening hours. In these recession-bitten times, that seems unlilkely.

A tiny stall in Brighton Open Market, Jasons specialises in local bacon, eggs, milk and cheese sold at cheap as chips prices. You can't get duck, quail or extra large, grass-fed, free range eggs like in Waitrose or Sainsburys but if you're after half a dozen or a whole tray of medium or large free range eggs - this is the place. I got six for a £1 a few days ago and they were great scrambled. I also picked up some divine goats cheese and smoked cheddar - imaginatively titled Bonfire cheese - for about £3 altogether.

Arts and crafts lovers should note, there's usually a couple of stalls selling ceramics, photographs and canvases too, though my personal tip is to check out the different jewellery stalls. I've picked up some lovely rings and bracelets here over the years. Tourists should note, the market is open weekends and bank holidays only from March to early June but usually runs seven days a week throughout the summer holiday season. That little ditty perhaps goes most part of the way to describing how I feel about the West Pier market. The perfect balance between touristy paintings of west pier at sunset and genuinely interesting bits and bobs, this little set of stalls has a distinctly festival feel about it. Last summer, while sauntering through the stalls on a lazy hung over afternoon, I picked up a peaked US military style hat that proved invaluable for the rest of the year. It cost me a mere five pounds and after a bit of customising with some big scissors it looked awesome. So awesome in fact that when at the end of the year I went away travelling, Yelp's very own Mike F took care of it for me and made it his own. No more hat for me, he looks rather good in it too. It's not all cheap hats and hangovers though. There's a stall selling a brilliant selection of second hand books - ideal if that's your thing but you don't want to spend your summer in the dark basement bookshops of Brighton. There are also some really beautiful jewellery stalls that give the place the festival atmosphere I mentioned earlier.

On Tuesdays, a fresh fruits and vegetables market is located outside Falmer House. Everything is really high quality, and the selection is quite vast: guava, mango, aubergines, avocado, bean sprouts, several types of apples and pears....It's the exact opposite of the produce usually found on campus. Prices are really reasonable...Sort of between Sainsbury's and Asda prices, if that helps. A cucumber is 50p. Four apples for £1. Romaine lettuce £1.25...etc. Now, the frustrating part. I'm not sure how long the market has been around, but each week it reminds me of a family setting up a yard sale for the first time EVER. I think it officially opens at 11am (people are shopping by that time, anyway) but signs and prices aren't up, the cash registers may or may not be ready, and there is always a shortage of change. Two weeks in a row my £5 note has been rejected. Rejected! I waited until noon yesterday, and the lady working the cash register was unable to find £3 in change. Someone had gone to get some, she told me. Possibly she could have gone before opening the market? Alright, I feel my frustration is returning so... In summary - fresh and delicious fruit and veg. Reasonable prices. Go late. Bring change.

Over time however, I discovered that the value really wasn't that good as most of the food tends to rot pretty quickly, and unfortunately the prices have risen considerably faster than inflation. I still come here occasionally but the 20 minute queues and a lack of change for any form of note means that the market doesn't really offer any form of convenience. Still, it is useful addition to the campus shopping experience. As somebody who no longer lives on campus however, I'll stick with my local green grocer, or Sainsburys...

Once you step inside, you'll find there's also a large selection of sneakers, training shoes, sweatshirts, hoodies, tee-shirts and jeans. Labels include Vans, DC, Etnies, Nixon, Von Zipper & Emerica. It doesn't matter how much I tell myself that you can create your own "look" on a low budget, and look everybit as well presented as someone forking out four times as much three times as often... Places like this always come along and show off some of the most awesome versions of my clothes... and charge £55 them... £55 feels like the standard... Whether its the ludicrously soft and well fitting hoodies with their gorgeous designs, or the series of gut wrenchingly bad ass trainers....... Gah! There aren't many brands here, with a strong loyalty towards the three or so on offer. In addition to the usual jeans, trainers, jackets shirts and hoodies, The Mole also boasts a strong offering of very sexy accessories. Be they the stylish wallets, trendy shades or somewhat (in my opinion) tacky headphones to match your clothes, The Mole has got colours and styles to impress... Not great value, but offering exceptional quality, The Mole is a place to treat yourself, or to blow that big bonus (not that I've ever had one to wield).
