Original review: Looking for a birthday party venue for our kiddo, I came across Assemble. It looked great! -- they advertise birthday parties on their website, and include pricing and other info about activities and number of kids they can accommodate. Great, it's all looking good. I fill out their online form with the required info, including three potential dates for the party that all comply with the date restrictions they have posted in their website, and submit it. I get a response the next day -- again, great!! Yes, they can do the first requested date. Yes, they can do activities for the age group. Leah, the "Camp Coordinator" (according to her email signature block) asks if we are still interested/want to confirm the party date. I say, yes, we definitely want to book. Cut to today when Leah emails to say, ooops! When we confirmed the party, we were just kidding!!!!! No party. Instead, Assemble decided to do camp on that date, so they can charge more money. They hope I can understand their decision to unilaterally cancel my kiddo's birthday party reservation, which they previously confirmed, because it's easier for them to cancel my kid's party than to keep their word. No. No, I don't understand. It's unprofessional. Best case scenario, they're so disorganized that their Camp Coordinator booked my kid's birthday party without realizing that they already had camp scheduled for that date. But, no, that's not what she said happened. She *admitted* that she found out (after booking the party) that Assemble subsequently decided it would do a camp on the party date. Rather than honor the party reservation that was already confirmed, they just cancelled my kiddo's party. I could never recommend them to anyone, because you can't trust them. They'll take their word back when it suits them.

All the staff work put so much work into making the space feel safe and welcoming to kids and adults. It is clear that everyone working there cares deeply about the local community. They highlight local artists in their gallery space, and bring in guest artists to teach kids and adults. The 21+ nights are so fun, I always invite my friends and end up leaving assemble with a fun project and a new skill!

Attended a student art show last night with a friend who teaches a class at PCA. There were so fantastic pieces created by the adult students. In addition of course there were other exhibits that we were able to tour. When I was in art school this was a place we visited often. Time to get back in the swing of things. The gift shop is still fantastic and filled with lots of unique items.

After brunch at Square cafe we needed to take a little walk and absorb some rays. It is a very serene setting and once they get the fountain running I may just come to sit and ponder. The building is so big and they offer many summer art classes so check out the website to see what they have. Events are held here all summer, mostly weddings. I went in to see the printmaking lab, I mostly do screenprinting but they don't have the light tables or screens here. The receptionist was so helpful and said that there would be printmaking classes over the summer and to call one of the directors to see what they might be able to do for me in regards to the type of medium I want to work with. If you need a place to do intaglio or relief printing they have a great space to print!

Donna, Chrissy, Mary, Justin and Char (plus others, of course) were amazing. I never worried about how she was being cared for and she was thriving and loved being in school. We also loved the diversity of the classroom and felt that was a unique and valuable part of her early education. Once she was moved upstairs to the Pre-K rooms and there was a change in leadership things really went downhill. Her behavior started turning negative and wound up. I found out later that the kids pretty much ran around and were just yelled at by the teacher - or at least that is what she told me, without malice. Considering how immediate her behavior turned around at the Pre-K program we switched her to, i don't doubt that was exactly what was happening. Another big issue was the idea of the lead caregiver in the pre-k room referring to herself as an educator since her grammar and spelling were borderline illiterate. How any adult can misspell words that you expect 4 and 5 years old to learn is really troubling. This was something other parents noticed as well and sort of laughed about it. One told me that basic math assignments sent home were also incorrect. I was kind of horrified by it. After a few other questionable issues regarding communication of behavior etc we decided to pull her out and it was the best decision we made - i only wish that we had not put her through that year in her "classroom". She is now thriving and doing amazing at Beth Shalom in a loving and structured environment. One thing that stood out to me about poor leadership was when the new director telling parents that they should appreciate that he was going to be working in one of the rooms when they were completely understaffed and about to turn kids away for being over quota. Other than that i rarely ever saw him whereas Jen was often floating, getting to know the kids, talking to parents. very welcoming and open.
