One does have to go through a application and provide a reference. They need to have good idea of how circumstances affect you and how they can best help. Sometimes they will offer a monthly sum, or give a lump sum towards a specific goal. They are funded by legacies and donations, as well as people raising money through being sponsored in marathons etc . Elizabeth Finn also run several retirement homes throughout the country.

The prices they set are unbelievably low compared to some other well known charities. You can pick up designer jeans for £3 and designer tops for as little as £2 each. There's a huge stock of books, dvds, videos etc a large mens clothing and shoes area and lots of toys, gifts and bedding etc. The baby clothes are from as little as 20p per item, I've kitted out my wardrobe from this shop. It is so busy and a real community area where people meet and chat and everyone is friendly. All the staff except the manageress are volunteers and it's for a very worthwhile cause. (the cottage hospice has about 14 shops in total)

I've found more than a few bargains in this shop, and they stock a wide range of goods including bric-a-brac, toys, shoes, books, clothes, household wares, and more recently they have started to sell small PAT tested electrical items. One of the great things about this shop is that they don't overprice items, recently I have noticed charity shops have been becoming very expensive and sometimes it ends up that you're better off buying something new in a cheap shop such as Primark than a second hand item. This is not the case in here, items are always very fairly priced. Look out for the bargain rail which is usually outside the shop when the weather is good enough - it is filled with items of clothing for 75p which have been in the shop for a set period of time - a sort of a clearance rail!
