Borshch is a family run discount appliance store open to the general public. From fridges to freezers, AGAs to tumble dryers, any and all appliances a family could want are found here. There are two types of item to be found at Borshch -- discount items, which have minor dents, scratches or small beauty damage; and new items. The new items are priced competitively, but not vastly lower than Comet or Curry's. The discount items, with minor surface damage, are heavily discounted, at 20% to 50% less than you'd find anywhere else. The warehouse is located in a slightly dodgy, very run down part of industrial Birmingham near Digbeth. The shop itself, however, is very neat and nothing out of order. The sales people are all very friendly, and know their appliances. Borshch also deliver within a 20-mile radius, for a flat fee. We took our fridge/freezer home ourselves, and the man very graciously helped us load it in the car. They have a very large selection of items, including American tumble dryers and top-loading washing machines (Maytag! OMG!).

It's well worth a look if an appliance has broken down and you're a bit short, or even if you're a property developer or something like that.

It is a very busy street and I was legally liable for damage to persons or their property, eg. a woman passing by with a pram on her way to the school opposite the house. The builder finally got the owner of the company to come and view after missed appointments. He said the pipe should be re-routed and that was done. I paid the bill - around the £6,000 mark - immediately after completion of the job. However it then took 6 months for me to get a proper guarantee for the work. The reason this was important was that I had been told that the water pump needed servicing every 6 months and I wanted to ensure that I maintained the conditions of the guarantee. The builder thought that this was rather frequent so I made many phone calls and sent recorded delivery letter to ask about the need to service and the cost from DAMPCO. No reply ever. The company has refused to answer questions and has clearly not shown interest or consideration of customers or aftercare of their products. This is a company which, once it has your cash, you may as well forget about. Damp proofing is a long term and expensive piece of work to undertake so do not take any risks.

The brilliant thing about this shop is the owner who also deals with most of the customer orders. He really knows his stuff and can give you invaluable advice. We were ordering a few items at once but he easily switched his knowledge from ovens, to fridges, to sinks with ease. They arranged delivery and fitting of all the items with care and ease. After consulting the internet their prices are just as cheap as anywhere else.

Having got three other quotes this one was the easily the best value of them all when everything was taken into consideration and the no-nonsense service was much appreciated. In terms of the design, where I knew just what I wanted and they gave me it, even when it was slightly different from normal/usual. For example I didn't want them to source the handles, I wanted to do that myself. I didn't want drill holes in the cabinets, so they left them out. Where I wanted to design the fireplace mantle-piece myself, they were happy to do that from my photo & drawings. However they were always happy to give advice if I needed it, like what paint finish worked best and why and how best to plan certain areas of the layout. Would recommend these guys in a heart-beat.
