I really enjoy having a wander around this shop and can usually find a new top, or a nice little ornament for my mum! The Grade II magnificent late Victorian building, provides a beautiful, memorable backdrop for both theatrical and music events, while its central position at the heart of the Halifax, offers event organisers 'Gorilla Zoo', an endless adaptable space. Gorilla Zoo Live with the support of the Halifax YMCA want to take the Marlborough Hall back to its musical roots way back in 1959, when brothers Max and Shirley Crabtree (aka Big Daddy) where both involved in promoting dances and concerts at the Hall . Calderdale's based venue promoter 'Gorilla Zoo' comprises of a team of event promoters, musicians, award winning marketers and sound and light technical experts, all of which have over the years been involved in event promoting. The founding members of the Gorilla Zoo have been involved in live events and publishing publicity with the likes of Clint Boon, Selecter, Spear of Destiny, Bad Manners, The Beat, Shed 7, Mock Turtles, Mani of the Stone Roses, Ocean Colour Scene, Fat Boy Slim and Johnny Marr to name but a few as well as nurturing local talent in Calderdale's thriving live music scene. Back in the day's for the cost of the six shilling admission the Halifax general public was treated to numerous performances that was so dynamic and full of movement that they left even the fittest among the sell-out crowd absolutely exhausted, Gorilla Zoo plan to duplicate this, well apart from the six shilling entry fee!!?? Cancer Research, apart from being a bloomin' great charity to support, have actually made quite a good job of this charity shop here on Newport Street. It's clean and spacious, has lovely, smiley staff and an excellent range of puzzles. Everyone loves a good puzzle. Furthermore, there are lots of trinkets here. You know, cups and sauces. Things for your mantelpiece. That kind of thing. The one mistake that Cancer Research have made with this otheriwse great charity shop is the lack of colour coding in the clothing section. I like to walk in to a charity shop and for the whole thing to look like a bloody great rainbow. An opportunity missed, I think.

I've occasionally been met with less than enthusiastic responses from other charity shops on that strip when off loading personal donations (be it clothes/toys/games). Help the aged have always taken such donations without any hint of malice (yes - can you believe I've given thousand yard stares by the proprietors of other stores when attempting to donate a bin bag full of decent donationsit's not as though I'm selling crack to them is it?). Besides at least Help the Aged belongs in this decade unlike the other relics further towards the Wilmslow Road end of Copson Street. Perhaps not quite Oxfam territory but the prices are far more reasonable that that shop. They usually have a good set of clothes (usually females fare better for clothes in charity shops than men - their clothes are usually bequeathed from boredom whilst ours are off the backs of the recently deceased. Still, recycling is a good thing.) Books and the usual bizarre items (David Hasselhoff Candlesticks for example) are all set out here. Worth a visit for you bargain hunters out there.

I've a had a great pair of shoes from here for very little, so make sure you go and have a look whenever you're nearby. You could always combine a visit when you're at Preston market which is very close by. This charity shop has a good amount of clothes more than anything, but also some more unusual houhold items too.

Just how I like it! The vinyl selection is particularly, um, interesting - very little rhyme or reason to it, but apply enough dedication to your search and you're almost guaranteed to come up with something fascinating for under a quid. The clothing also is set at 'old-style' charity shop prices - kit yourself out for an interview or night out for under a fiver. Who could ask for more? Not me: I've patronised the place many a time, and I'll be back again too.

There are the usual charity shop items such as second hand clothes and shoes but what really interests me is that they always have a few interesting books and rare cds in the shop. I like to sift through these kinds of things to find a bargain. Surprisingly, maybe for a charity shop but this place also has a changing room. So, if you do decide to get some clothes, you can try them on first with privacy. The shop is quite long but narrow so the shelves are quite close together, making the place feel a bit like a jumble sale at times. The staff are pleasant and always helpful if you need assistance, for example, bagging your goods or even directing to to another shop if they know they have something you are after.

Obviously as with any charity shop you will need to search to find something you like but I rarely leave here empty handed and never leave completely disappointed with the stock. They also sell a few bits of furniture, various bric a brac, etc. The prices here are just so reasonable compared to nearby charity shops. Things that are brand new with tags might push £5-6 but most things are much cheaper. And the books are usually less than £1. It's not that I don't want to give money to charity, of course I do, but it just doesn't appeal to spend lots of money on second hand clothes when you could buy them new for less. The staff/volunteers have always been lovely when I've visited. Some of them I think have additional needs so just be patient- if you need super fast and efficient service perhaps a charity shop is not for you.
