It…read moresits on a portion of the 5,350 acre 1635 land grant to Adam Thoroughgood along the Lynnhaven River. Nestled in the back of the Thoroughgood neighborhood, the lure of its colonial history has drawn visitors for many years. It's also a central point for activities in the neighborhood. During my son's elementary days, field trips to the house were greatly anticipated. This time, before its acquisition by the City of Virginia Beach, provided a wonderful interpretation. One downstairs side of the house was 17th century with the other side 18th century. It was beautiful. I mourn the loss of the period pieces and wonder what the city did with the treasures. During that time period there were many school buses that traveled Thoroughgood Drive for field trips, I haven't seen them during recent years. After the City of Virginia Beach took ownership there was a reinterpretation that closed the house for many years. The beautiful previous interpretation has been abandoned. ;( For many years there were conflicting opinions on the construction date based on evidence in the construction materials. The city dated its construction as about 1712, which may or may not be correct. It was obvious that the house hadn't been the original home of Adam Thoroughgood. That house was most likely in what is now the Baylake Pines neighborhood. The homes then were near a waterway. A hurricane changed the course of the Lynnhaven River causing the nearby Lynnhaven Parish Church to be moved and the graveyard to be under the Western Branch of the Lynnhaven River. Legend is that many years ago boys swimming in the river felt the tombstones, now most likely covered by the river's silt. Regardless of the interpretation and the controversy of who built the home, it's well worth a visit. Explore the early colonial period and experiences of the family who first owned the property many of us live on. What archeological items could be hiding under our grassy lawns?

They've held a Highland tea on the lawn, where we learned about the history of perfume and listened to the technical skills of a bagpipe player, donning A kilt while sipping on tea and enjoying a lovely presented table setting with a charcuterie board and petite fours. Or a ghost tour, learning about the local ghosts and stories of the ill informed and misguided public re: determining one's innocence on whether they were a witch to playing ghost hunters and holding conversations by the bonfire. They have great Christmas events showcasing the various holiday traditions as well as their history and how a typical Christmas dinner would look. The performing home of VMT is the Sander Center for the Arts, conveniently located at Town Center. The venue is in walking distance to numerous restaurants where you can have before or after show dinner. Perhaps their best production I've seen in my many years of attending this theater was the recently performed Jekyll & Hyde. The casting was superb. The performance was flawless. Lighting, costumes and set design were a plus. Having seen this show on Broadway a number of years ago, I was hoping for marvelous. And it was. The only thing I would have changed was the slight Pop take on the show stopping "This is the Moment." I wanted the song to climax as it did on Broadway. Should you have the opportunity to attend a Musical Theater performance by Virginia Musical Theater you will not be disappointed.

I had Lexi with me, the weather was beautiful, and it ended up being the perfect little walk for both of us. What I really liked is that this isn't just a place to look at flowers -- it's actually a really interesting garden and educational space. There were different themed sections throughout the property, including things like water-wise trails, native plant areas, perennial gardens, and herb/plant displays, which made it feel more interactive than just a basic garden walk. Everything was very well kept and thoughtfully laid out. It felt quiet, peaceful, and like a great place to just slow down for a bit. I also appreciated that it was dog-friendly, which made it even more enjoyable for me since Lexi got to come along too. I also loved learning that it's maintained through the Virginia Beach Master Gardeners / Virginia Tech Agricultural Research & Extension Center, because you can really tell there's a lot of care put into it. This was actually my first arboretum/garden stop in Virginia, and it definitely made a great first impression. These handmade decoys are quite rare due to the fact that hunters used to burn them for firewood if they were damaged after the hunting season was over. I enjoyed the film in the museum and wish it was available for purchase. It showed how these decoys were made by hand, including using shards of glass to sand the birds, prior to the advent of commercial sandpaper. I learnt that aside from glass, dried sharkskin was used to sand down wood. The only thing that would make this museum 5 stars would be to add placards to the exhibit so you could know what exactly you're looking at without needing to ask the volunteer docent. While we were sitting in the rocking chairs on the porch of the museum, a volunteer was leading a hands on woodworking demonstration which was neat.

It has plaque describing the contribution of Sidney Kellam King Neptune VI in forming the city of Virginia Beach. It just sits on a concrete extension of the broad walk, a bit underwhelming for such historical landmark. The field across the statues is open to public. People just walk around while going in and out of the beach sand. Bunch of restaurants and shops are nearby to grab food and drinks. The theater is used for scheduled special events. But while visiting the park I noticed few of random people were just sitting on the stage. It felt little sketchy but there was plenty of foot traffic since there was beach shower faucet right across the Neptune statue and the park.
