However, having been put off by Queen Alexandra's Hospital in Portsmouth by their lack of physical tour (you have to get by with a substandard YouTube video), and also feedback from others that it was a busy hospital and somewhat akin to a sausage machine (I had one story of someone being in and out in 12 hours - and they didn't necessarily want to be processed so quickly), I decided to opt for Chichester. It was the right choice - indeed quieter, albeit a bit older looking, but still fit for purpose. This maternity ward is very well run, the midwife was very good and I got the epidural that I wanted (needed!) for my third baby. I would definitely recommend this hospital to any nervous mums. Getting the tour and having a chance to ask questions and familiarize oneself with the layout was really helpful in orientating me to the NHS way and allaying any fears/answering questions. My only pick up point was infant security. As I left the hospital the receptionist let me swan out - no outgoing checks, no bracelet checking, no escort to the door, nothing. It made me wonder what the protocol was should there be an attempted baby theft...

For nervous patients the far end of the waiting area has a lovely fish tank, popular with children and next to a good selection of childrens toys. The surgery operates a touch screen booking in service, which means no more queues to book in with the receptionist! They also have an intercom system which saves the staff time as your name comes across a tannoy into the waiting area advising you which treatment room to go into. The staff are generally all very friendly, and although it is quite a modern surgery it has all the personal touches you would associate with a traditional one!

I was admitted to the McGill Ward on 30 Jan with a possible clot on the lung. The ward was very…read morebusy, I was seen quite quickly and all necessary tests were made quickly. Thank goodness it was a chest infection but was kept in overnight because my oxygen levels were low. My only complaint was the ward was dirty and looked run down and tacky. The loo was horrible, not clean and patients urine samples were left there. Even mine! I was told to give a sample leave it there and a nurse would sort it out. My sample stayed in exactly the same place where I had put and was still there when I left, the same goes for the other samples, they never moved.

Dr Donnan is far and away the best doctor I have every known. He always makes time to talk, does…read morenot rush you, listens to your concerns and remembers who you are. He is kind, compassionate and just an absolutely lovely man. I cannot rate him highly enough. The surgery itself, I never have to wait long for an appointment, all the staff are kind and helpful, Judy who was my midwife sometime ago is just amazing and the nurse who takes my blood is lovely, kind and never hurts. I think it is a wonderful doctors surgery.

The phone is answered very quickly and appointments are normally same day or next. One of the doctors rooms is upstairs so if you are unable to climb the stairs you must say on the phone. When I made my appointment I could not climb the stairs the doctor came down to get me, I was taken in to another room with no hassle and seen too. Nothing was to much trouble. The waiting room is outdated but the doctors and the staff are excellent.

They have mothers and babys clubs, family planning, Xrays and minor accident department. It is always clean as you would expect. They also have a chemist on site so you can get your pills without having to go somewhere else.
