I stumbled across the reviews on here before we were due to leave, but decided to give it a chance. Well I don't know if they have bucked their ideas up since the previous reviews, but we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. If you expect a two-for-one type dining experience then you will undoubtably be disappointed, but if you want good quality freshly cooked food then this is the place for you. I had a starter of chicken liver with black pudding, main course of pork fillet with vegetables (and a superb black pudding mashed potato) and then a berry pavlova to finish. Even on a Wednesday night the place was pretty busy, the staff were polite and friendly, and mercifully happy to leave you alone to enjoy your meal without constantly badgering you. Price wise as I mentioned, this is not your two-for-a-tenner type place, so for most people (including us) best saved as an occasional treat. But what a treat it is. We will be returning in any case.

I've since been back to the posh bit upstairs. Wow! It is a bit confusing to review as really there are two venues here, the pub downstairs and the restaurant upstairs. In my experience the food in both is exceptional but they address different markets. Go to Montagu's expecting pub food and it will seem expensive, go downstairs expecting "fine dining" and you may be disappointed with the experience.

So to have a long time resident (and now housemate) say on my first night in, "there's this brilliant pub down the road. You can go there for a drink and just to chill out", well it seemed too good to be true. It takes years to find that perfect little spot where you can get the beer you like for the price you want, surrounded by people who don't vex you or drink till they want to fight you. Where you can chat if you want, or squirrel yourself away with a pint and a book if you don't.... doesn't it? Well apparently not. I found the renovated Bridge to be incredibly welcoming. Really comfortable,an authentic pub. The staff are really nice and are happy to chat away. The beers (being Kirkstall brewery) are all excellent. Some of the "guest beers" are a little on the pricey side but that ok (Save them for your birthday). Upstairs is a very nice "proper pub" setup and the downstairs (which you could be forgiven for missing) is another bar entirely, with little nooks to hideaway in and access to outside. Its also where they keep the loos so be sure to go looking for it eventually. They have a quiz night, which is a win. They're set in a really nice area. And if you want they'll serve you next to any drink in a tankard (these things matter you see). I've not tried the food but i'm sure it'll do the trick if the rest is anything to go by. And ye know what. It was pretty nice. This one is situated alongside the River Ouse, so if you're lucky enough to get a window seat you have a beautiful view of the waterside and bridge. They do various meals in their 2 for £8.95 deal, and I was sure the mother would plump for her usual, scampi, and chose a burger accordingly. No. This time she wanted a chicken wrap, from the lunch and a drink deal. Fine! I'll have the steak and onion panini. Oh yes! Great choice. Needed a bit of sauce, or some such, other than just cheese, to bring together the steak and onion, but it was cooked perfectly, and very tasty, with not a bit of fat to be found. I had a red wine to match, and it was acceptable for the house special. All in all it was a not bad place to get a spot of lunch. You wouldn't catch me there on a night out though! Bomber shots and pop music just ain't my scene.

The gammon was thick and well cooked, the chips were huge and home cooked and was served with a soft fried egg and a spiced pineapple chutney. The plate was cleared and every mouthful was enjoyable. My wife'a steak and ale pie was piping hot and full of meat. The mashed potatoe was creamy and the veg was well cooked. All in all a very nice dining experience. Better than a motorway cafe!

We did however have a great bottle of red which we enjoyed. When we mentioned this to the waitress (who was efficient) we were told it was the chefs first day...Should be his last as well. It was such a dissapointment, we have loved the food and atmosphere here so many time before, but on a Sat Night to only have 14 people in the whole place speaks volumes, or maybe it was REM coming out of the sound system that was putting people off, definantly not the right backround music for 'fine dining' as much as I like REM.... It has it's own parking lot behind the pub, with plenty of spaces, you walk in past a nice outdoor seating area with a raised well pond with carp and a waterfall and then into the traditional wood-lined bar area where we'd reserved a table for 7 off to one end of the bar. Service was great, the girl advised me on ale and the rest of the hooligans on drinks without a problem and we then decided on mains, the rump steak was a favourite with a smattering of surf and turf, this arrived in good time and the steak cut like butter it was so well cooked! the sides were equally tasty, crisp yet fluffy hearted chips onion rings and a delicious salad of baby leaves dressed with a vinaigrette dressing. That safely polished off and plate (well boards) left clean it was on to dessert and I managed to demolish a waffle with banana and ice cream, the others were equally appreciative of their choices. All in all a very pleasurable experience and a reasonable price as well, I'll be back there again when I'm next down visiting.
