First off: LOVE that this is a woman-run bicycle shop. I walked in today in need of a couple tubes and a patch kit. I'd replaced a tube earlier in the day and must have pinched it when reinstalling the tire, because I could hear air escaping when I paused pumping. The woman behind the counter (Margo, I gather from other reviews) was very helpful in giving pointers for replacing the tubes myself. She showed me the larger box that my tubes came out of to demonstrate that even though I asked for 700x32 size, and these said 27x1 1/4, they were the correct size conversion. Her mastiff, Wiggles, really wanted to say hello to me but was blocked by a baby gate. I'll be back here for sure if I ever need any other bike parts or service! read more

It's never a good feeling to get taken advantage of by a mechanic. I went in for a regular overhaul and when I went to pick up my bike I found the quality of the repairs to be so shoddy the bike isn't even usable. New bar tape was slapped on, not even covering the bars in some sections. The back brake rubbed against the rim in areas. Worst of all she tried to tell me that that was normal, that the brake pad was supposed to rub against the rim until it "broke in." Every new part on the bike was double the price I've paid at other bike shops for identical repairs. $55 for a cassette that costs $30 up the street. On top of everything my card was charged 15 dollars more than the paper bill. Just a terrible experience. I need to spend extra now to bring the bike somewhere to get it ridable. read more

The selection of parts, bycicles and Margo's customer service are remarkable. Prices are reasonable and selection of parts and bycicles are wide ranging and the selection of great. People who disagree with these observations have a limited knowledge of what is available and a poor sense of what customer service means. Excellent bike shop. I brought in my dad's old Raleigh Super Grand Prix that had been sitting in the garage for 30 years and Margo and her team did an amazing job of restoring it. They completely took it apart and cleaned everything, sourced parts that were missing or broken and even took the time and care to try and bring everything back to the original specs as much as possible. You can tell Margo knows her bikes and has a passion for them. I know where I will be for all of my future bike repairs and needs. I've been going for 10 years, for my bike, my wife's bike and my two daughters bikes as the girls have grown out of their bikes over the years. Margo at the shop has seen my little girls grow up from toddlers to teens. We have always gone to her and the store and she is always helpful. Growing up in NY, I like Margo's dry old school straight faced humor which if you are not used to you might think she is being short but she absolutely isn't! She is great and always gives good advice. . But more importantly, she always helps and never tries to upsell. She is straight with you and really helpful and to the point. My partner and I love Brooklyn Bicycle Center and the person who runs (and I assume owns) it. She is always incredibly kind and witty with us. Her prices beat the other bike shops in the area by far. All repairs we've gone in for (flat tires, skipping gears, wheel alignment stuff) have taken no more than an hour or two. Other reviewers have commented that she is brusk or unkind, and while she absolutely *is* direct when asking questions and communicating what she needs, I think their reviews are bogus and do not take into account she is the only person running an entire bike shop. I also think some masculine folks respond negatively to a woman who runs the show. Or is it that some people just don't understand old school Brooklyn communication? Regardless of personality, her work is great, the shop is woman-run, and her prices beat all others. Also, there are shop pups! Who could ask for more? read more

The hours and completely inconsistent and the communication is very poor. I brought in my bike for a tune up and wheeling truing on a Monday. Margo told me she could get it in a day and it could be ready on Tuesday but I leave for work too early that day. So I said I'd pick it up on Wednesday and just go to work late. I arrived at 10:30 a half an hour laster than yelp and google says it opens. Yet, she was not there and the place wasn't open. Now, I'm stuck working in a coffee shop and missing in. person meetings and I've been calling. It's past 11 and no one is answering the phone. This is not the first time this has happened. She often leaves early too. This is no way to run a business. This is the last time I'm taking my bike there. read more

I hadn't ridden my bike in years--with all the aggressive Brooklyn drivers and unthinking car-door-openers, it had ceased to be fun. Enter the Coronavirus, and it's car-clearing sanctions; I thought it might be a good thing to have a ready alternative to the Q train. So I dug my battered, world-weary Trek out of the basement of our apartment building, evicted the spiders that had moved into its various crannies, and took it to the nearest bike shop, Brooklyn Bicycle Center. Margo took it in on Saturday, and on Sunday it was like a brand-new bike. All the gears work beautifully without jumping the chain; her lever-enabled seat bracket is tight and easy to use, the wheels are true, the brakes grip, and my new tubes actually hold air. She even helped me bungee my bag of groceries to my bike. Thanks, Margo--it hasn't ridden this well since I bought it, back when biking meant dodging dinosaurs! read more

Parts are over priced. $25 for a basic quick release clamp?! Not even coated. They also illegally have a $20 minimum for credit cards ($10 is the federal mandate) and they will also charge you 4% of your purchase if you pay with credit or debit- and then won't mention it. There's a teeny little sign on the cluttered counter indicating the fee. If they're going to charge 3-4 times the prices of the online rate - they could at least absorb credit processing fees. I would have gladly paid the $25 rather than ordering from Amazon for $8 to support a local business but paying that on top of paying to use my debit card - no thanks. read more

Last week I took my bike to Brooklyn Bicycle Center for a tune up and a flat tire. When I went back to get my bike Margo told me that my bike was ok that it didn't need a tune up that just the brakes needed some adjustment and the tire just needed air. I was so happy because I was ready to spend at least $130.00. She could've said that it needed a tune up and a new tube, but she did not. I appreciate her honesty. Easily the worst experience I have ever had at a bike shop. I brought my bike in for an overhaul on 6/1. I was told it would take 1 week. The owner then called me and said it would take a couple of extra days, which I was totally fine with. When I called a couple of days later to check when I could pick up my bike, the owner said she could not locate my bike. She said she would call me once she located it. She did not. After waiting a few days, I walked all the way to the store to see what was going on. The owner had the audacity to suggest that I had put my bike into another shop and was extremely rude when I expressed concern over the fact that she had lost my bike. Finally, she located the bike, and said it would be ready in several more days. When I finally went to pick up the bike (17 days after I had initially dropped it off), I expressed my dissatisfaction and the owner seemed completely indifferent. Although I had to pay for transportation while my bike was being worked on for longer than initially promised, the owner refused to give me even a small discount as a gesture. If you want timely service on your bike and an experience with someone who is organized and accommodating, do not go here. I am not someone who would ever besmirch a small business, but this place is run by a condescending and incompetent business owner. read more

I have been dealing with my share of New York City bicycle shops--the good, the bad, and the just plain incompetent--for nearly 20 years. I can say without hesitation that my experience at Brooklyn Bicycle Center has been the best I ever had in the city. The store is well-stocked, and the woman who runs the place is obviously an expert in what she does--but without even a hint of the grumpiness or condescending tech snobbery that unfortunately plagues so many bike shops in the city. She graciously (and correctly) answered every question I had without attitude. And most importantly, she took my heavily abused road bike and made it immaculate. Now every single moving part runs even smoother than when I first bought it. The prices were very reasonable. And the quality of her work is truly worth every penny. If you are anywhere in Brooklyn and need your bike fixed, this place is worth the trip. read more

The workmanship, knowledge and service by the owner is excellent. Very patient and helpful with recommendations and the prices are fair and equitable. I bought my bike from this shop and have had a few things done to my bike since then. Recently, however, the volatility of hours of the shop are inconsistent. While we recognize the illness of the business owners mom and my heart personally breaks, knowing about the the business owner needing to attend to family matters, there is no communication about when the shop will be open or closed. The relationship between small businesses and its customers is symbiotic, and therefore, I recommend, a simple change of message on the answering machine, or an update on the website or some form of communication to let people know that the shop is closed would be greatly appreciated so that people don't take time out of their day, go over to the shop only for it to be closed when its supposed to be open. read more

The woman who owns this shop was really kind and knowledgeable. I don't own a car but when I'm at a bike shop sometimes have this suspicion someone is trying to up-sell me on unnecessary bells and whistles. The owner was straightforward and pleasant. I moved from Hell's Kitchen into Brooklyn at the end of this past spring. My bike needed to be worked on and Brooklyn Bicycle Center was the shop closest to my new apartment. The folks at the shop did a full assessment of my bike, notified me of what work needed to be done, and after I approved the work and attendant costs, they fixed my bike up better than it's ever been before. They were in constant communication with me and were even very patient with me when I wasn't able to pick up my bike when it was finished because of plans I already had. I just went back there again yesterday to get air in my tires. The woman who runs the shop engaged in a very pleasant conversation with me (she even remembered my personal details from the last time I was there over the summer!), filled up my tires, and sent me on my way.
