I am visiting KC to see some friends and world cup events. One friend highly recommended I check this place out so why not. My experience was just a dandy ole' time to say the least. First off, the food there was second to none, I not only had a full plate of burnt end nachos (delicious!), I had another full dish of beer battered fish tacos. Every item hit the mouth with the most delightful feelings in the world. Not to mention the service there was awesome. I went to brookside barrio as a small 10 person work lunch. I got there almost at time of opening to get a table for our party since they do not take reservations. There was already a big party in the enclosed patio, so they accommodated us in the main but limited sitting area. The wait staff was very pleasant and patient. I got a coconut margarita, and most of my other ladies got just normal margaritas. They were delicious. The queso dip was one of the best cheese dips, I have had in a long time! I went in thinking I was gonna get one dish and I pivoted due to the spice chipotle as the jus of the barria tacos. I ended up getting the carne asada tacos. They were tasty but chewy. I ended up switching sides to get the elote on the cob. It was messy and definitely not my favorite elotes style. All the ladies seem to enjoy their entree and the prices were decent for the area. Honestly, I would come back for the food and the patio. But not for the service. Hence, the three stars rating. Our server was not friendly. She checked up on us a few times. But she seems annoyed that we were there. We came there for a good time and didn't want her demeanor to ruin our experience. So we tried to chit chat with her to change up the mood, but that didn't change her attitude either. I get it if we gave her a hard time, but the attitude was already there before we sat down at our table. Many reviews for this place is low due to poor service. I've been here enough to have a solid opinion on Brookside Barrio: The location + patio are fantastic, the service and entrees are wildly inconsistent. If you could only come here for one thing, I'd recommend making it a happy hour with appetizers and drinks. Their spicy margarita is great and their chips and salsa are pretty good as well. Their patio is also right in Brookside and gets some good sun on those February/March afternoons when the temperature pops. It can be hard to get in here due to space, but if it's warm enough, they'll open up the garage doors and being inside feels like being outside. This spot has become known for service issues over the years, and I can confirm. Out of five visits, we've had things go somewhat smoothly once. Every other time we're hunting down the server to order, to get a check, or to get almost anything. I appreciate that they have a kids menu with some tasty quesadillas, and typically my kids enjoy it here. Very, very occasional spot for us but if you go in with some realistic expectations, it can be a fun spot. read more

This seems like a nice chill place to hang out especially on Taco Tuesday. The service was decent, the food was good. I would have liked to see more options regarding the drink menu but overall not a bad spot to check out. I plan to go back and possibly do another happy hour possibly on an off day. The ambiance and service made my dining experience at Barrio last night. The food was good , nothing too special but satisfied our Mexican food cravings nonetheless. The two marg pitchers we ordered were a little watered down, but ended up being plenty for our group of 7. Our server was very attentive, kept our waters filled, and chips and salsa refreshed. If nothing else, come here for the patio seating. It really is such a relaxing and inviting space with a lovely bar and ambient lighting. What can I say - I was not overly impressed, but not overly disappointed either. I'd been wanting to try Brookside Barrio for a while, because it truly looks cozy and inviting from the outside. This weekend, we went for it. And it didn't quite live up to expectations. Service was pretty good, with a friendly waitress, and the kitchen catering to a vegan diet. I ordered the chicken street tacos and my sister ordered the street tacos and they subbed out the meat for veggies. The server wasn't immediately knowledgeable about substitution possibilities - we thought she was just going to get the tacos sans meat, but we were happy to see the platter come out with some additional fajita vegetables. I can only speak for my own food, but I didn't think the chicken tacos were all that good. The chicken in particular was mediocre. It felt like a deconstructed Qdoba bowl on a restaurant plate. But I ate it all, and it was fine. I can see myself trying Brookside Barrio again, but not with the same level of enthusiasm. read more

Barrio had me an endless mimosas on a Saturday and Sundays for just $15!! We ended up ordering from the brunch menu and landed on the breakfast quesadilla with chorizo. It was absolutely the best breakfast quesadilla I've ever had and it came with a homemade sauce to dip it in. Our friend ordered the pork and egg enchiladas. She seemed to like those as well. We were also given chips and salsa to snack on throughout our time at Barrio. I will definitely be back for more endless mimosas very soon. I called to ask some questions about their waitlist and large group policies, and the person that answered the phone would not even listen to my questions and gave me the answers to what they thought I was going to ask instead of what I was asking. She then let me know it was very busy ever weekend insinuating she did not care if they got our business or not- which was never my insinuation or question. But this place in the neighborhood has a really cute vibes and it's great to go walk around the city when it's nice out there you are celebrating something special today and we choose this place to give it a try for the first time loved it at the first go we kept it very simple with their best things on the menu. We got the naturals spicy, habanero, salsa, seafood, quesadilla, mini Chi shrimp fajitas. Make sure to check out their daily specials. They have amazing options. The service was great. Brookside Barrio has quickly become a favorite location for happy hours and outdoor seating among KC peeps. For the first few times I visited, I only had small bites and drinks, but very recently I went back for a full lunch and had a great time. Personally, the chips aren't my favorite and can sometime be underdone. The skinny marg wasn't bad, but not sure I'd order again. The enchilada though?! Amazing! It came with all of the best stuff and the elote was the star of the show. I cut the corn off the cob and was able to have a bit of it with every bite of enchilada and MAN OH MAN was it yummy. Second visit same experience. Got seated, no one greeted us, after 10 solid minutes we moved to the bar, waited another 5 minutes. Finally got greeted, ordered a Ranch Water from one person, the bartender came over and said, "like Ranch Water in a can?!?! We don't have that". However...most of the entrees came with a side of Mexican corn...ON THE VERY LARGE COB, topped with a smear of seasoning/cheese, and few wanted to chow down on something that big and messy at our crowded table and in front of everyone! But of course (if only for the sake of this review ) I gave it a try! The seasoning was delicious, but there was only enough for the first several bites. Our server was great, especially in such a loud/jovial and crowded place. She handled keeping track of everyone and everything ordered at our table of ten with ease and a great attitude. First time here... my girlfriend and I sat in the patio area. The heaters had us staying warm. I had the birria tacos and my girlfriend had the jackfruit nachos. Her nachos were fantastic! My tacos were delicious but not my favorite when it comes to birria. Theirs had more of a mesquite bbq flavor than most that I've tried. The service was great and so was the ambiance. I absolutely love love love the fact that they offer pork rinds / chicharrones as a chip substitute although it's a $5 up charge. The queso a was a good serving size and good flavor & consistency. They have many different margarita options so you can get a different variety whether you want spicy or skinny, or both! The bad points: the server was nice but he wasn't very attentive. He would walk away before you could get a word out. So they lost in getting extra business because you would have to wait for him to round again to get your missed drink order, etc. For my entree I ordered the Mexican lettuce wraps. HORRIBLE. The shrimp was cooked nicely. But the lettuce to make wraps were so tiny idk how you could even make a wrap with those things. You could fit maybe 1 shrimp on each one and everything just fell to pieces. The Mexican slaw that also came with it was flavorless. Had very little mango pieces. Also I didn't see much jicama in it. I appreciate the open air concept, however with it getting down to the low 40's tonight, it made for a very uncomfortable dining experience, even if we were seated indoors. Service was slow. It took a while for someone to come by to take drink orders, it took a while for us to be served chips and salsa, and it took even longer for someone to take our food orders. I opted for the surf and turf kebabs with beans instead of elote. Chips and salsa were decent, I loved that the chips were well seasoned. I'm not sure if it was because the dining area was unheated, open air, and likely in the 50's, but my food came out.... cold. The steak was overdone, chewy, and quite difficult to cut with my butter knife. The entire entree lacked salt and seasoning. It was a fine meal, but nothing stood out.
