I had never noticed them before today, so I decided to stop by and see what they had. The variety is pretty broad considering the size of the place. There were candles, bags and accessories, singing birthday cards, and knick knacks. There is room enough to browse and the man behind the counter greeted me (coming and going) but otherwise let me look around on my own. Another upscale quaint shop selling all kinds of items that are unique yet you may recognize some…read morebrand labels. For instance, I found some "Melissa & Doug" toys and ended up buying one for an upcoming birthday present. It was a rug with a race track laid out on it and it came with four race cars. We have two family members currently into gnomes and this shop had a lot of variety in the gnome department. One we purchased was a girl gnome because it had pigtails. I had not seen that before. Another we purchased was a "soft" gnome. Both will be gifts when we get back home.

But it was here we found the one that we liked the best so far. It simply said, "Happy Campers" with a picture of a little RV. The flag was $18 which is comparable to the other shops and the black iron flag pole/stand was $10, the same as everyone else. So we thought it was a good deal. The cashier was super friendly and offered to take my trash and throw it away for me which was kind of him.

You never know what you'll see at the Brown County Art Gallery! You might just round a corner and…read morebe struck with a beautiful vision -- a gorgeous work of art right in front of you. One of the best things about this little Nashville art gallery (other than being surprised to see such beautiful things in it) is that it's free to visit! Yes, you can just walk right in and start exploring. If you wanted to talk to someone, there's a booth with people in it who will, I'm sure, tell you informative things about the gallery. I wouldn't know! I don't like to talk to people at art galleries. I'd rather just experience the art myself, quietly, and form my own opinions. What I do know about this art gallery is that it's almost 100 years old, as of this writing. Nashville, Indiana, is a hub for art, and I would consider the Brown County Art Gallery to be the heart of the area's art scene. You'll find work from local Indiana artists here, as well as artists from around the Midwest and beyond. The art ranges in styles from impressionist to photo-realism and everything in between. You can purchase original artwork, or if you're feeling less spendy, you can purchase more budget-friendly prints or postcards. There's something for every art collector here.

We were immediately welcomed by friendly staff when we arrived and encouraged to visit the juried show. The gallery has been running by the Brown County Art Gallery Artist Association since 1926, making it one of the oldest galleries in the U.S. The gallery has moved around a bit since 1926, with the current location on land donated by noted artist, Adolph Shulz. The art is high quality by well-known and budding Indiana artists. Much of the art is museum quality. This is a place to buy real art for your home. Prices start at a couple hundred dollars and go up into the thousands. There were two galleries featuring art and stories about famous artists with Indiana connections. Currently, artists Nancy Noell and Gustave Baumann are featured. Some of the woodblocks carved by Baumann are on display. There is another large gallery with paintings for sale by local artists and members of the Association. A wonderful classroom/studio has been added to the facility. During the summer, kids can sign up for lessons. (But classes are full for 2024). There is a small gift shop with cards, books about the artist of Brown County and more. Visiting the gallery is free but they do take donations. They have ample parking in their private lot. The building is ADA accessible. I love it and will return.

The Totem Post is, quite simply, a Nashville, Indiana icon. It first opened in 1952 and was one of…read moreonly five shops in town. It is still in the family of founding owners Bill and Marielle Jockey as their daughter now owns it. Open year-round, The Totem Post offers authentic Native American jewelry, crafts, moccasins, knives, ethnic gifts, silver, and copper jewelry. The Totem Post folks are without fail friendly and I'm pleased to report that the shop itself is surprisingly wheelchair friendly (not always true in Nashville). A lot of the items at The Totem Post have a sense of spirituality to them and the times I've visited it has felt like a bit of a respite to even enter the establishment. The store has a bit of a fun origin story. The Jockeys were dancers on the SS. Uruguay who visited family in Indianapolis. During the visit, they were taken to Nashville, Indiana. Not long after, the leathercraft establishment went up for sale - The Jockeys moved forward and bought the place and quickly began establishing themselves among Native American and South American communities so they could carry high quality yet affordable items. While Nashville has certainly grown larger than those five shops from 1952, The Totem Post remains a local favorite and a tourist destination. I seldom, if ever, visit Nashville without a stop here.
