I've been coming to this shop for about a year now. Originally, I was getting haircuts in SF, but once the pandemic started, I had to look for a new shop. I have lived in Emeryville for 5 years and this is hands down the best shop in town. You can go to any barber, Kevin, Lauren, Beto, or Lucky and you will leave with an amazing haircut. Avoid Ray. I will need to go get a follow-up cut with my regular person. There was a lot of nervousness running through my head when... 1) very few question were asked about how I wanted the cut. Questions popped up after the cutting already happened (you should be information gathering all the time) 2) shaky hands. I originally asked for what I thought was a simple cut, but after getting home and showering, I saw just uneven it was. The fade does not exist. Sides were not the same length, and the back was chopped up. From the conversations I overheard at the shop, there's also a propensity to cut hair that introduces an "awkward" period and there was always emphasis that "it'll grow into it 'perfectly'". This isn't want I want to hear from a barber. I've never gotten a good haircut where "it'll grow into it". read more

First off, if you ever find a negative review on this place (which I don't think you will), be certain it's definitely the reviewer -- not the barbershop. I've been going here basically since they opened. I have to say after 5.5 years of living in the Bay Area and being extremely picky with my cuts, this place is the best I've come around. Kevin and Lauren have done an amazing job creating that 'premium-feel' barbershop, but with their naturally welcoming personalities have also managed to keep that 'local-neighborhood barber' feel, too. From placing little QR codes on the benches to easily pay your bill, the scented hot towels, and the nice playlists running on the Sonos speakers, you can tell they're both perfectionists about their business. The combination of their skill, taste, and professionalism has also led to some great additional talent appearing most recently at the shop -- so you can basically sit in any chair and get an amazing haircut and have a great experience. So if you're looking for a perfect cut and great experience all around, this is the place. read more

Awesome spot, was a bit skeptical at first due to the high prices, but compared to the rest of the area it's fairly comparable. I have a very challenging hair texture being half black/white, so the way I style my hair is very different than how it looks after I get it cut, but each time I've gone in each barber was very patient and listened and asked a lot of questions before and even during the cut they always ask questions before proceeding to make sure. I'd say the only down side is that they take their time so if you want a quick and dirty hair cut, you're probably better off going to super cuts. Lauren is definitely my go to for mixed textured hair, but sadly she's usually booked upwards a week out. So make sure you book your appointments at least a week ahead. read more

I had a great experience today at Bruce's Barber Shop. I went in for a beard trim since I don't have much hair any more. I walked out with a great looking beard and a little more confidence. The owners are friendly and knowledgeable. They also offer salon style services for men that I'm definitely trying next time such as beard washes and shaved head treatments. Most East Bay barber shops - and there are some great one's - don't offer these kinds of services. Most shops are also cash only. Great barber shops are simple. Cash only shave and a haircut type places are great when the barbers know what they're doing. This is a beautiful, warm, modern space that was clearly designed with love. They take appointments and you can pay with a card. Bruce's Barber shop felt more luxurious without being more expensive or overly hip and filled with finance bros like the shops in the city. Short review: Great location, top quality cuts, great atmosphere. Come get your hair cut here. You won't regret it. Long review: The interior is really nice and clean, they set out benches with the QR codes to easily pay, and the inside smells really nice. It's also very accessible in the Public Market. It's especially nice if you live at one of the apartments nearby since it's only a 5 minute walk away. Now for the cut, Lucky cut my hair and he is a true professional at his craft. He fades super cleanly, and he's super attentive to all of the little details. I can tell that he really takes his time and really cares about what he does. A lot of places i've been to usually sit you down for about 20-30 minutes and send you off, he really took almost an hour really getting every little thing. I feel the love he puts into his cut. Although I didn't get my hair cut from the other barbers here, I think you can safely assume that you would get the same experience from them. I would obviously tell you to go to Lucky, but you really can't go wrong with anyone here. They're true professionals at their craft and they don't let just anyone cut hair here. Speaking of the barbers, I also had a positive experience interacting with the barbers here. They set a very welcoming environment, and they were very talkative and made me feel like I was spending time with friends and family. Make sure to make conversation with them while you're getting your hair cut because they're really nice and interesting people. Lucky and the others definitely made my experience more memorable and I'm gonna come back regularly to clean up my hair and catch up with them. To potential customers and existing customers, the barbers here are all working hard during a pandemic being face-to-face with customers daily, and they still pay attention to every customer like they're the first one of the day. My husband went to these guys and came back with a wonderful haircut. I insisted he go back again before our wedding and unfortunately they did a terrible job. He said the guy seemed to be having a bad day or something, but it was seriously upsetting. It was uneven and choppy, I had to even it around his neck when he got home. I didn't have a strong idea of what I wanted or what to expect, and Lauren rolled with it and gave me a neat taper comb-over.
