Lamb Burger with mint and herbs!
    Max G.

I was looking for a place off of George Square to grab a quiet bite because i had been eating Pub food and Curry for 5 days straight. I stumbled upon Brutti ma Buoni on a wide avenue. the waiter was very friendly, and gave a good recommendation on the Lamb Burger with mint and herbs. with a pint of beer and a side of chips, this was exactly what i needed. As i found in most restaurants in Glasgow, and just about any pub, the service is slow by American standards. i personally don't mind if my food comes to me in 10 or 20 minutes, because i'm usually with someone or am enjoying the atmosphere. i asked the waiter if they had newspaper to read while i waited for my food, and he happily obliged. usually, the food is worth the wait so i don't mind too much

Unusual red tinsel like decor in Brutti Ma Buoni!

I just keep coming back. Like your favourite neighbourhood bar with fantastic food. Today was chorizo and squid stew. Tasty.

We loved this restaurant and enjoyed all our dishes. The good thing about small plates, at modest prices, is if a member of your party doesn't care for a dish it's no big deal. The salads, the kebabs, the dips, the seafood... everything was first rate as was the service. Only dish that faltered (and we had 10 among four of us) was the moussaka. Terrific meal! They need to pay more attention to their Yelp listing - there's a full bar, excellent cocktails, and they take credit cards - despite the Yelp listing.

As I get further into my twenties, I've found that restaurants have an increasing tendency to play their music very loud. I'm sorry, and call me old fashioned, but one of the main things about going out for dinner is that you are there to have a conversation with the person you are with. I'm not there to get my groove on. Anyway, I digress. I really enjoy Greek/Turkish and Middle Eastern Food which is what this place specialises in. We chose some mezze plates including the chicken souvlaki, soutzoukakia (meatballs), the Moroccan Chicken Tagine and the Loukaniko. It was mouth watering. It was great value too, the portion sizes were manageable and we left very happy customers.

One of the places she recommended was 'BABS, and after looking at the menu online we decided to try it. It turned out to be one of the best culinary experiences we've had. The place is not large, the ceilings are low and the noise level can be a little distracting. However, even though we didn't have reservations, we were quickly seated. When a larger table became available, we were offered that one instead. We had the sense that this was very much a family-run business and that they really love what they do. We were quite hungry, so we ordered the Mezze Platter for Two which was very reasonably priced at 22.5£/per person. For our four-dip starter we chose the Tzatziki, Sundried Tomato Hummus, Classic Hummus and Babaganoush which came with small pitas that were themselves spiced. All were delicious and we could have easily filled up on just these. Our main courses were chicken shish, chicken souvlaki, lamb shish and king prawns. All were extremely tasty. The platter also came with two side dishes and for these we chose the Basmati Rice and the Beef Doner Fries. The rice was an excellent complement to the main courses, but because by this time we were so full we ate the Beef topping but left the fries. We loved 'BABS so much that a couple of weeks later when we had a three-hour layover in Glasgow between trains, we went back to 'BABS for lunch. The return visit did not disappoint. We would wholeheartedly recommend 'BABS to anyone dining out in Glasgow. It's well worth it.

Piccolo Mondo is close to Glasglow Central Station, on a very uninviting street. Despite the somewhat negative exterior setting, inside it's welcoming and traditional. We found the service to be friendly and efficient; unfortunately, while the food was AOK it was nowhere near as good as the reviews had led us to believe :-( For my starter, I had the house specialty - Potted Prawns, served in a warm creamy sauce with thin grissini sticks. It was OK, but I doubt I'd order it again. For my entrée I had the Seafood Risotto, which came with too much Calamari in a slightly spicy sauce with prawns and mussels - decidedly unappealing... Overall, it was an average Italian meal for too high a price in very busy surroundings. Better to find an exceptional meal elsewhere.

I had quite possibly one of the best takes on a fry up this morning, called the scone stack. It really is good. Potato scone, black pudding and square sausage. You have to see it to believe it. Also, the staff are friendly, even had a very eccentric person in this morning (not sure if he was the manager) seemed very upbeat and perhaps not gone to bed after the night out but very good humoured.

We'd booked in for dinner at 7.15pm on a Friday night and were seated by the door. There is outdoor seating (with leopard print throws for when it gets chilly, nice touch) which would be nice for a nice day. It got quite cold by the door after a while but thankfully a nice waiter offered to close it for us which was really appreciated. Our waitress was a little brisk but it seemed like she was run off her feet the whole night. The other staff we encountered were all friendly enough as well. Having a look over the menu I felt a little rushed to decide what to have but perhaps they wanted to turn our table over. The menu is a little odd, to be honest. Pasta dishes on a tapas menu? I just don't get it. There is also a selection of Brutti Bread Piccolo which I'm guessing is something like pinchos but never found out as the waitress didn't seem to have the time to answer questions. I avoided the section of the menu that baffled me and stuck with the more traditional tapas dishes: croquettes (cheese and bacon), pan catalan (tomato bread), peaceful prawns (butter and garlic prawns) and deep fried halloumi. Other dishes I tried thanks to my dining companions (Graeme H & Katie V) were chorizo, patatas bravas, albondigas and I'm sure there was also a squid/calamari dish that I can't see on the menu just now. The stand out delicious dish for me were the croquettes. Super crispy on the outside and really cheesy in the middle, these were really amazing. So much so, as I excited tucked into the last one I was proclaiming how much I loved them, only to find the last one was empty. Yes, just a shell of a croquette and no filling inside. It was hilarious/devastating. If they weren't so good, I probably wouldn't have said anything but seeing as I really wanted that last one, I told the waitress who got another portion bought over pretty quickly. I forgot to check the bill to see if we were charged for the extra portion. I hope not. Everything else was ok. The pan catalan was tasty, but perhaps needed more soaking time for the tomato into the bread (and to cover the whole piece of bread as well). The chorizo was crispy and almost a little burnt. The halloumi was really good, but nothing really outstanding in terms of being anything different. Dishes I wasn't impressed with: the peaceful prawns and the patatas bravas. The prawns were really bland tasting, I couldn't taste any garlic. The patatas bravas was more like a potato stew than crispy individual potatoes. And the albondigas was really hard, too hard for a meatball and it was pretty unpleasant to try to eat. The sauce was really nice though. When eating a tapas meal it can be easy to bypass the disappointing dishes, but now I've come to write the review there was quite a few things I didn't think were great. In terms of a cool place to go for a drink, I would definitely go here again. It's a nice space and had a really nice Friday night vibe. But I would hesitate about going here for tapas - although I would order those croquettes again, for sure! Edited to add: I would head to Brutti Ma Buoni rather than here as I found it much better overall! It's their sister restaurant, also in Merchant City.
