Unlike the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, I had to go into the slow lane here once, and yet I enjoyed uninterrupted swimming, and achieving results in half the time than in the fast lanes at other pools. Quite large and spacious. Great range of classes and learn to swim programs. The showers stay on until you turn off the taps in the change room facilities here. Soap is available too. Again a great pool. Fairly good rates. Location wise, excellent. Only a short stroll from Central train station.

What the hell am I talking about? Prince Alfred Pool is what I'm talking about. No, not talking. Gushing, in strictly the non-chatroom sense. I always thought this was a scummy hobo park littered with needles and broken dreams. But I took a punt on a friends advice and hit this pool up for an afternoon swim and I stand before you a changed man. Firstly, it's free until November. Nada, nix, bupkiss. Secondly, it's a hella nice pool, with clean, clear water, lotsa lanes, and - the best - a huge slope of grassy wonderland for sunbaking and, sure, perving, because why not? There's a big wooden deck under a tree, umbrellas, a cafe, and state of the art changerooms. We even smuggled a bottle of wine in and got a little sozzled in the sun. Fine a lot sozzled. What a day though. I particularly enjoyed the city workers who busted out the budgie smugglers and were sprawling out in the sun while getting through a fat stack of reports. It's a great design: grassy hills, big yellow sun umbrellas, with detailing in dark wood and swimming-pool blue. There's not that much to it: a 50m pool and a cafe, change rooms, lockers, and little fountain thing for toddlers to run around in. It's highly green rated : sustainable materials, tri-gen energy, water recycling. The pool is clean and heated (though not too too hot). Suitable for wintertime laps, though getting out of the pool is the unpleasant bit. Today I was a bit unimpressed with people's pool etiquette (the slow lane is not for standing around in with your boyfriend, it's for swimming, morons - and a few stray legs from the play lane heading into the lap lanes, hmph), but I guess that's life in a public pool. It has the standard fast, medium, slow, and leisure lanes and mostly people understand what that means. I'm pretty thrilled that I had a swim in late May, and lay around in the sun. Go Sydney. Go Prince Alfred Park. And the best bit: it's free for the first 6 months! (Until some time in November 2013...)

Although universally refered to as «the gym» by students, the Macquarie University Sports and Aquatic Centre is actually so much more. The complex's facilities are extremely impressive; no matter what time of day or night you find yourself there, you rarely need to wait to use your chosen piece of equipment; a pleasant contrast to many gyms around the 6pm mark. The centre also offers its members free use of its multiple squash, tennis, basketball and netball courts, as well as its indoor and outdoor pools. Swimming lessons for all ages are available here, as well as squads and the ability to leisurely push yourself up and down the pool for as long as humanely possible. The cafe attached to the gym is widely considered to produce the best coffee on campus, and - bonus! - there's never a line. In case you've committed the rookie error of coming for a swim and forgotten your swimmers, the Sports and Aquatic Centre stocks a full range of swimming costumes and goggles, plus a formidable range of other affiliated gym gear. Plus, there is a carpark with two hours of free parking - happy days! The centrex also has an impressive range of classes, at a range of times deeply convenient to uni students on campus for the day. Wanna try Tai Chi? Now's your chance! Pilates? Body Attack? Body Pump? Spin? All the old favourites - plus some newcomers on the gym class scene, the most obvious being Zumba - are avaiable. Plus, they come at student (and working-professional, obviously) friendly prices; for the non-member, classes are only $10 a pop! Compare that with the Fitness First's of the world.... If team sport is your thing, then you're also covered; the Sports and Aquatic Centre's mind blowingly popular social netball is offered three nights per week, while social touch football and soccer are on twice weekly. For the less traditional, you can partake in weekly competitive badminton. (I'm not joking). The centre's staff are also always friendly and courteous, the bathrooms clean and the lockers available. The weather was heaps good and had great company which made the experience even better. $26 for group events having your own section for 1.5 hour is not bad if you ask me. At first while waiting for the rest of the gang to arrive I thought to myself, awesome! Can't wait to hold Hawkeye's bow ... 15 minutes later and ended up with a wooden bow and arrow - fail. Little did I know the first section were the professional players training for whatever they are training and we use the amateur bows haha. Not sure whether all the staff there are like that or not, but the facilitator we got was pretty dull and boring. Seemed like she hates her job and just needs to be there for the sake of it. But doesn't really matter who's there to be honest, you don't really need to speak to them anyway, just listen to when to pick up the arrows and when to shoot. Can't wait for round 2!

If you've read my other reviews, you'd know Hubby and I have had more than the average number of lessons, and we do go out on our own at home in San Diego, but we'd like to get a lesson at any new beach when available. And thank GOODNESS we did here on this particular day. The other two students both have surfed only once with a lesson before, and it seemed everyone loved the experience. Nick took the time to understand our abilities first, then assessed the surf and decided on the best spot for the easiest time paddling out. A bit of a work out just carrying the boards a good quarter mile down the beach. It was incredibly choppy that day, so he instructed us to paddle out right in the riptide, then cut across the sand bank to the line up. It all worked out beautifully, and I got some amazing waves with Nick giving me a push and telling me exactly when to pop up, even rode in on the super intimidating overhead ones I normally probably would be too scared to try. However, when I took a break on the beach, the second time paddling out was exponentially more difficult. Nick was able to push my board, with me on it, past these crazy waves, because I was about to turn around and give up. Another student had an emergency, and he was able to go help her, then come back and continue to push me past the breaking waves, so that I could get one more ride back to shore. I absolutely trust him to keep everyone safe and still make sure each person have a great time. Overall, probably top 2-3 surfing lesson across the 20+ we've had! Equipment was fairly new and in good shape. Changing facilities were basic but serviceable.

You just take the ferry (every 10-20 minutes) from Circular Quay by the opera house then walk ten minutes north east to manly beach from the ferry terminal at Manly.

Sky Zone is kind of like that...if it weren't for the staff enforcing the rules, there would definitely be a Lord of the Flies situation brewing here. At $18 an hour with socks it's pretty affordable, though their locker system really sucks. There's only one terminal for their 20+ lockers, and for whatever reason if someone checks out of their locker and you check in right after they check out, they will assign you that locker...so if that person shuts that locker right after you check in and are assigned that locker you're screwed and will need to get a staff member to unlock it, unless you don't mind losing $4. There are 4 primary zones to experience here, the trampoline zone where you can jump to your hearts desire (1 per square,) the basketball hoop zone (short and tall,) foam pit, and dodgeball. Foam pit was probably the most fun, assuming you don't have a horde of children in front of you...as it can take a minute to climb out of. Didn't get to experience dodgeball, as there was a horde of children in front... I would wear some athletic gear like DriFit as I totally did not expect to get such a workout from jumping...be prepared to sweat. Will definitely come back cause it was all in all a great time, even with the kids running the place.
