Most of the instructors were wonderful, offering guidance when I asked and space when I needed it. It is very reasonably priced and remains a true NYC institution. The only instructor I would caution against is Pat Lipsky. I found her conceited and negative, even spiteful at times. If your aesthetics do not align with Immanuel Kant or Clement Greenberg, you may not feel welcome in her class. After she asked me to help set up her studio for a visiting curator, I left the class. From that point on, she refused to acknowledge me when we crossed paths. Still, the overall experience was deeply meaningful. I am grateful for the time I spent here and the ways it shaped my work and friendships.

Passed by this on my way from Columbus circle, and I plan on coming back to try an art class. They have evening and part time schedule of classes, from figure drawing, sculpting, painting, illustration, so there are a lot of options to choose from. Nice historical looking building from the outside.

There's a lot of technique and skill that will require your understanding, attention and intention to get things going. Be kind and patient with yourself, and remember that practice makes perfect. The teacher is also very encouraging and helpful. I was having some trouble finding balance with how much pressure to use and in which angles to apply them and her patience and continued instruction while I tried to figure it out was very much appreciated. There was a moment when it finally clicked and I made 6 pieces that day, and she was genuinely happy and proud of me for not giving up and that feeling had me floating for the rest of the day. It's 3 hours of labor where you get to use your hands to learn, create and play. You also get studio hours with your package so you can come back in your own time to practice. It's an arduous hobby to pick up, but I'm sure in time it would grow into a calming and therapeutic one. I'm grateful for the experience and I definitely recommend. You might not look like those people in the movies that make it look all artsy and romantic, but in time you definitely might haha ;)

I wanted to tuft a rug for a gift, and I remembered Queens CM Sam mentioning this studio (see her…read morebubble tea rug!). It was easy to book online. I opted for a custom design (they have some pretty neat standard designs, but I wanted something specific), and uploaded 3 design options when I booked. They reached out to me by email within 1.5 weeks for approval, and my design was ready and sketched out on canvas when I arrived. Parking wasn't difficult, but make sure to read the street signs, because some streets are no parking or standing during the day! I arrived early (make sure to take the elevator!) and after confirming my name and filling out the liability form, I was welcomed to browse the yarn colors. They had picked some out already for my design, but I was free to swap any out. You can even change out the colors for the standard designs, as my fellow tuft-ers chose to do. Thanks to Taylor for teaching us the ropes (we were first timers!) and helping us through the whole experience! She was mostly hands off once we got started, but was open to helping out. Towards the end, she looked over our rugs and helped by pointing out parts that could be filled more so that the rug comes out much nicer. Note: you are free to bring food and drinks, but there is limited space on the table. I ate prior to arriving, but did have a drink with no issues. Be prepared to be there for at least a couple hours. I spent a little over 3 hours tufting their 27x27" frame (as did my fellow tuft-ers). They finish your rug by trimming, gluing and shaving it, which is supposed to take 3-6 weeks. I got antsy at the 6 week mark, so I sent them an email. I received an email the following day that my rug was ready for pick up (phew!). You can request for it to be delivered for a fee, but I wanted to pickup, so I went the following day. Pickup was smooth and very friendly. She helped roll up my rug and secure with a yarn for easy transport. My rug came out better than I expected! Overall, a cool and fun experience for a newbie like me!

It's good to practice for a bit on the scrap before you start on the pattern so that you get the feel of the pressure and how to control the direction of the gun. The class itself is set for 2 hrs but most people are allowed to stay after to finish. Then you pick it up 3 weeks later for the studio to glue shave and have it set.

My class is taught by Abby on Wednesdays, who is really patient, an excellent instructor, and an incredible potter herself. The other teachers are great too - I've admired all their work on the greenware rack and have heard good things from other students. As for price, it's very reasonable - $480 for 6 weeks and you can do benchtime if you need or miss a class. For me it's totally worth it to have a little refuge in my neighborhood to hang out and make things. I've already replaced a bunch of my bowls and mugs with handmade bowls and mugs and my friends are now asking me to make them things since I've gotten a lot better since I first started. If you're thinking about signing up - DO IT! It's so worth it.

First, they're more expensive than most other studios in New York City. Earthworks is also more tight and cramped than others. There is little room to move around and no place to set your toolbox that is not in someone's way. WORST of all it's a very uptight place with strange, unnecessary, rigid rules and strict, odd policies. There is a high-strung vibe in this studio and you can feel it when you walk through the front door. There is a new owner and a fish stinks from the head. And why post images on social media of beautiful work that was NOT created or photographed in this studio? They steal images from the internet and post as their own. What does that tell you? There are other studios in the city. PLEASE don't come here.
