Certainly not for the price - a £90/night family room was ample for three ladies and all our girly getting ready needs. There were drawbacks - they included a lack of chair at the desk, a malfunctioning hairdryer, a pod-like bathroom liable to flood and a window which looked onto the street and through which a multitude of people stared at various times. However, the owner was more than friendly and even treated us to complimentary rosé before we ventured wedding-wards. Our room also featured plenty of mirrors and very very comfy beds - both invaluable. The breakfast was really good; lots of hangover placating orange juice and bacon was very welcome. The proprietor was also extremely flexible on check-in and check-out times while the hotel is in a great location close to the station and a short walk into the centre of Chester. Definitely recommended as a cheap and exceedingly cheerful Chester hotel.

The rooms were of a good standard but the bathrooms were awful I have seen bigger wardrobes NO room to move & if you spent more than 5 minutes in the shower then it flooded the entire POD Public areas were decorated to a good standard but was fraying around the edges somewhat, tatty, old looking plug sockets etc The location isn't bad, a steady walk back from the city centre & Lloyds is situated in a good location for the train station! Only saw 2 members of staff the whole of our stay & found them friendly. Would return to Chester but wouln't be rushing back to stay here ultimately nothing more than a glorified B & B.

Even though most people breeze by here on quick work or business trips the restaurant is always highly recommended with a chef willing to accommodate all needs no matter how late or early you need a bite. Talk about comfy and clean too. The rooms are well equipped and fairly spacious, and the bar and lounge areas are comfy and tranquil. Plus the staff bend over backwards to ensure you're having a good stay, and the place actually manages to retain a lot of character which is unusual considering the sheer volume of corporate-focussed chain hotels you come across these days. The building is lovely, the location is just the right distance from town and transport links but still feels tucked away and peaceful, and everything's mighty efficient. I actually spent my fortieth birthday there on a slightly strange course from which I learned nothing but at least I got a day out of the office and a nice lunch. I've just recently been back as my brother-in-law and his fiance chose the hotel as their wedding venue. They do the complete wedding package in-house so the ceremony, wedding breakfast and night do all took place in the hotel. The grounds are ideal for wedding photos and there is a nice outdoor patio, not too far from the bar, which is a great location to sit around and chat while the photos are being taken. If the weather isn't good enough there's a bright and warm conservatory adjacent to the patio. The food at the wedding breakfast was very good, duck parfait as a starter, roast chicken with boulangere potatoes and veg for the main course and a rich chocolate cheesecake with caramalised bananas for dessert. Everything was well cooked and tasty. Service was very efficient with courses been served quickly but without any feeling of being rushed. The evening buffet consisted of cooked meats, quiches and pasta and rice salads and again was very tasty and a step above those hotels that rely on the freezers in Iceland for their buffet menu. All in all a very well organised and enjoyable day. I can't really comment on the accommodation, although I did get a quick look at the bridal suite (and I assume that not every room has a jacuzzi the bedroom!), but as a conference/training or wedding venue you can't go too far wrong with the Oriel House. The only minor quibble we had was that there was no facility to pay by card at the bar, we had to leave a card behind the bar and set up a tab, but we would have preferred to pay as we went.

My only downside is the fact that you could tell the building used to be used for something else and it shows in the rooms. The way the rooms are designed and painted kinda looks dingy in some areas, at least mine did. That said, I was very satisfied with the size of them. I also have to thank the hotel for helping me ace my Spanish exam, I had to take a spanish exam via skype to graduate from Glasgow uni and their wifi came in clutch. We were awoken at 7am with lots of hammering and drilling. Really unimpressed and disappointed that the hotel had not tried to place us in a room away from the construction. It was a Sunday night so assumed it wasn't too busy to do this. Luckily I had ear plugs as we didn't have the energy to phone and argue with the staff to get moved. The room was very spacious but to the point it felt a bit empty and souless. Gaping spaces in the room just felt unwelcoming. Plain decor with the exception of the bright carpet and bed head. Comfy bed and non-feather pillows which we prefer. Don't try checking in early as we discovered they turnaround the rooms very late. I arrived back at my room around 5.30 and the cleaning service was only then leaving. Very unusual. The air con was good as we stayed during unseasonably warm weather so nice to sleep in coolness. In terms of service, the staff seemed a bit distracted and didn't seem particularly helpful. My favourite part of the hotel is the spa which is located in another building opposite - very hot jacuzzi, with a cool small pool, and a warm small pool, with sauna, and steamroom. The sparkly lights were not on when we visited which i was disappointed with as the pictures on the website make it look really pretty. Also, they don't seem to have many padlocks for their lockers. My husband and i had to share a locker which was inconvenient being in separate changing rooms. It was a reasonable hotel but i wouldn't rush back and would certainly avoid until construction of student accommodation is finished!
