This is a very cute spot on East Sixth to grab dinner on a date or with friends. The servers will answer any of your questions and make recommendations which are helpful when many things from the menu sound tasty. It makes for a great experience to start off with. The empanadas (carne suave and lentejas) were flaky and tasted very good. I also really enjoyed their steaks (churrasquita and carne milanesa) even though they were prepared differently, they both had great flavor. Their drinks were good too. I enjoyed the Mate Iced Tea. This place has a beautiful ambience, and it's one of the only places in Austin where I have tried blood sausage (morcilla), which I love. I recently went in to buy some chimichurri cause I was running short on time and didn't make it myself. Upon receiving the chimichurri, I inquired and found out some equally unfortunate and aggravating news. THEIR OLIVE OIL IS CUT WITH VEGETABLE OIL! Why?! That's so disappointing considering this place is represented as being authentic. An authentic chimichurri uses a quality olive oil, something to further enrich and enhance the health benefits of the sauce, not to mention add to the overall flavor profile. I know I would rather spend more money to receive a product that is actually healthy, delicious, and made with quality ingredients. I came on Friday during happy hour. I started with a glass of sangria ($8) which was fruity and tasty but the glass was pretty small. Then I had some empanadas ($4 each). The carne picante was so flavorful. It's filled with spicy ground beef mixed with green olives, raisins, green onions, and a bunch of spices. I don't love raisins on food, but I still thought the empanada was fantastic. The ingredients and flavors come together so well. The chicken empanada didn't have as much flavor as the spicy beef one. The cebolla y queso (caramelized onion and cheese) empanada was very underwhelming. I wish it had more cheese because it tasted like it was mainly an onion empanada. My partner ordered the lomito sandwich ($9) which was just a tiny piece of beef tenderloin sandwiched between French baguette. It lacked flavor and we were surprised at how small it was. For dessert we had the quatro leches ($8) which is their take on a tres leches sponge cake. It comes in a pool of condensed milk and is topped with whipped cream and strawberries. It was good, but it was a little dry. I prefer tres leches cakes that are soaked in milk. We also had an alfajor de maicena ($4), a cornstarch cookie sandwich filled with dulce de leche (think caramel) and rolled in coconut flakes. This was dense and dry on its own, but it would probably go well with a glass of milk. Food: I'm from Miami where there is exceptional Argentinian food, so this was just not up to standards. The pinwheel sausage was fine, tasty, and the arugula salad was basic, but flavorful. My coworkers and I came to Buenos Aires Cafe for a weekday lunch. It was a big hit! The four of us split the Argentinian Wheel Sausage. The flavor of the sausage was great. The chimichurri served with the bread was phenomenal. It really had a strong but tasty flavor. I had the spicy beef and lentil stew empanadas, both of which were delicious. The crust was flaky and buttery. The filling had a good level of spice and was perfectly warm. My coworkers had the milanesa sandwich, bratwurst sandwich, and soup of the day. The empanadas were bursting with flavor, and the Lomito beef sandwich was truly divine.

The food was very good, we had olives, bread service to start. It was just enough to start because we focus on our main course. The pollo al horn was delicious, especially the creaminess in the polenta. The wilted spinach was cooked perfectly and well seasoned. Portions were spot on. My partner had the beef tenderloin, it was cooked perfectly medium rare but he preferred the taste of my polenta to his carrots. Though the food was good and well priced, the loud room detracted from the experience. It's a small dining room with small tables, so sitting side by-side is impossible (but that's fair). The music was loud, and this made other parties around us amp up their conversations. We struggled to hear each other, and could hear every detail of everyone else. Came here with a few friends by recommendation since there aren't many Argentinian options in Austin. Unassuming restaurant, I honestly never realized it was smack dab in the middle of East 6th. We shared a few things between us and each got entrees. Bread Service - the bread was like a mix between a flatbread and a bread, I probably would've preferred a bread (loaf). The compound butter was tasty but I would've preferred it more whipped, rather than solid/chilled. Empanadas - tried the spinach one, and also the lentils one. Both were pretty solid, crispy on the outside with good filling. Gnocchi - this one was weird, they had a special seasonal gnocchi I think that was, and there were two types, one orange, one green. The orange one was made with pumpkin, and I can't remember what vegetable the green one was. It could be the vegetable mixed with it changed the texture - it had a slightly grainy texture to it. And the flavor was surprisingly sweet, not sure if that was from the pumpkin flavor or the general sauce. Overall, just not what I expected, I would've preferred a more standard gnocchi dish but wanted to go bold with my choice here. Had extremely high hopes for this place and I would consider returning to try more items on the menu, but as other reviews have noted, I left dissatisfied with the slightly disingenuous practices First, the good: the main thing we wanted to try was the empanadas and they happened to have a great HH deal going - 4 empanadas and 2 beers for $18 (Tues and Sat only!) Pollo: delicious, not as much flavor as I was expecting though Carne picante: great flavor, my favorite of the bunch. Not spicy though Atún: great flavor, especially paired with the chimichurri sauce. A bit too fishy for me so I let my partner finish the rest, but definitely worth trying out! Cebolla y queso: delicious! Very simple but felt like something I'd love to have around the holidays. We also got a mojito and a daiquiri after the beers - both had great flavor! Pretty small sizes though Empanadas were very filling but we decided to go ahead and try the "award winning" lomito sandwich since it was $9 on the HH menu. Seemed too good to be true - turns out it was. We ordered the sandwich and was asked if we wanted fries or a salad with it, so we went with fries. We asked for it medium well, but it came cooked medium. I understand I'm a bit picky with red meat, but I wasn't able to finish eating my half because it was undercooked from what I had asked. Sandwich was very average apart from that. Basically meat on bread. When we got our check, we noticed we had been charged $23 for the lomito and asked about it. Turns out, since we got the fries with it, they upcharged and gave us the full size. The $9 HH lomito comes with no side and only half the sandwich. This would be fine - IF it was mentioned anywhere on the menu, online, or by our server. Or it would've been great if when we ordered, the server said "half or full size?" My annoyance wasn't so much with the price, but the dishonesty. Also, it's not a huge deal, but all of the prices were at least $1 higher than on the website. Again, not a major problem - but it wouldn't be difficult to update so that you meet people's expectations. Overall, just from looking on the website, it looks like a great Happy Hour place, but in actuality, it seems they just want to get people in and slightly skimp you. Flavors were good, servers were nice, and the building/decor was charming! But there's simply too much competition in the Austin food scene now for this to be in 4 or 5 star range. read more

Staff was wonderful! Food was delicious! The dessert was decadent! We started off with some sangrias that were pretty standard and yummy. Next we did the provoleta appetizer which was good but a bit too charbroiled for my taste. It says that it is charred but I only mention because it was quite difficult to even cut the cheese to place on bread. The dinner was perfect though with tender steaks and yuca mashed potatoes. The dessert was chocolate creme brûlée! I loved that dessert so much that I considered ordering another one for our after dinner drinks in their speakeasy downstairs called The Milonga Room. We came during the happy hour which is 4-6, where the prices on the food and drinks were such a steal. We came around 5 and there were only a few others in the restaurant. We started off with empanadas and got a chicken, mild beef, spicy beef, and cheese. Both beef empanadas were the stand outs and so amazing we had to order two more! I feel like I could go and just get a bunch of these, and call it dinner. The caipirinha is also on happy hour and wow this drink was awesome! So fresh, and let me tell you they make them strong :) On the happy hour menu we also ordered the burger and Lomita sandwich. The waiter described the lomita happy hour sandwich as being a great size to sample, but enough to leave you wanting more. (The dinner size sandwich is larger) and he could not have been more accurate. This sandwich was amazing. The bread, the chimichurri, the meat, everything about it left me wanting more. Their splendid spicy chocolate creme brulee was the champion of our meal (virtual cheers and confetti). That was the first ever chocolate creme brulee I've tasted. We tried these empanadas: carne picante, atun, and pollo - all extremely delicious and devoured with the addictive chimichurri! It was so good I skipped the butter and used the chimichurri on my bread. Yes, along with the empanadas we had their bread service. ...such warm and cozy flat bread; nicely crispy on the outside with a soft center. It made us close our eyes while eating it. The restaurant's exterior is a happy vivid blue; very much like you'd see in Argentinean deco. The interior is warm with high ceilings and has an attractive bar. Came here for a fairly early dinner on a Saturday night. We made a reservation and when we arrived it didn't look like we needed one, but by the time we left there was a bit of a wait. I was pretty torn between the "shepherds pie" and the gnocchi, I thought going for a more meat centric dish would be the move here, but the flavor combination in the gnocchi is certainly something I'd want to come back and try The pastel de papas was pretty tasty, but i found it much closer to a chili topped with mashed potatoes than a shepherds pie. The flavorful beef was rich and kind of dominated the other ingredients, but I certainly got a nice soft texture from the potatoes. Of my friends dishes I would highly recommend going for anything that has their marinara sauce, or that is a meat forward dish. I would recommend asking your server about the dish before ordering, as the portion sizes vary pretty significantly and don't really align with the price particularly well. We were pretty surprised that the quatro leches came out to be the most disappointing part of the meal. One would think that upping tres leches with yet another milk would make for an incredibly creamy experience, but the cake was super dry. My best description would be if you took a hostess cake and put it in a shallow pool of condensed milk. Overall I think this spot is worth checking out, but there are quite a few misses on the menu where I can see many people having a less than stellar experience, particularly given the price range read more

Had a great experience here last month. They were very busy and a little understaffed, so the service was a bit slow. It was understandable and the food more than made up for it. They were also able to get us seated relatively fast. We ordered some wine, which the waitress helped us pick. We had the Malbec, which I never knew until now is a popular Argentinian wine. It was very good. We had some empanada appetizers, the carne picante and Verdura. I preferred the carne picante but, it was nice to have variety. For the entree, I got the Pastel de Papas, which is listed as an Argentinian Shepard's pie. Definitely had no regrets because it was so so tasty. The meat was savory and flavorful and the potatoes were crispy on the top. Boyfriend ordered the gnocchi, which was good but not as good as mine. For desert we had a cuatro leches which was good, but not the best leches cake I've ever had. Honestly I thought it was a bit dry considering the name. Maybe we were just too full. So, this is now our most favorite place to eat when we are in Austin! there is never a question of where we're gonna eat when we're there. My husband is from Argentina and I've traveled there with him a few times, discovering that the food is delicious! While searching for an authentic Argentina food restaurant close by, I found this restaurant and saw they served Milanesa, which happens to be my favorite dish. When we travel to see family in Argentina, they always fix it for me because they know how much I love it. When I tried it here at this restaurant, it tasted exactly like what his family makes for us. It is perfect! A few things here really caught me off guard, but it was okay at best due to the experience. Let's start... This location is situated in a place with a lot of graffiti in the area, along with construction being frequent. Busy area for sure. Inside the restaurant when you first walk in is the presentation of desserts and the bar area. The rest of the space is like a small lounge on the left and right sides of the vicinity. For the milanesa, I had ordered it with a caballo (meaning two eggs and not, "...to a horse."). There was also an order of bread and butter, along with gnocchi. I had also gotten a glass of iced yerba mate cocido. Now to the actual review of the food and the experience. Best part of the reviews always: Empanadas: Absolutely EXCELLENT. I really enjoyed the chimichurri alongside the empanadas, and the flavors blended well from the vinegar of the chimichurri and the subtle but bursting savory and buttery flavors of the meats and cheeses used for the different empanadas. I really enjoyed the empanadas a lot. Milanesa: Remember I had said "a caballo". Here's the thing--I don't eat pork out of personal beliefs. However, I received my dish not knowing it was made napolitana (and not at my request at all), along with the a caballo. I took one or two bites not knowing it had ham as I was excited to try out the food, until I was told that it was ham. This had me a bit frustrated because now I felt insulted. I removed the ham and just continued eating, but I was pretty already through with eating at the restaurant. Gnocchi: Just no. Get rid of this off of the menu or change it completely. Nothing meshed well, and the gnocchi was like a dessert than an entrée. Bread and Butter: Some good stuff right here. Overall experience: I loved the empanadas and bread and butter, but I disliked the rest. The milanesa was good until I realized I was eating a lot more than what I had asked for. I'm quite disappointed, and I think being a place that is one-of-a-kind is such a cool thing to have here in the Austin area. However, I don't see myself ever going back as when I made my request, I was very specific that I wanted my milanesa with the two eggs, but I got charged and given the Napo style. Galleria: Sunday night--this is the night to show up in person. The side patio outside is beautiful. The bldg. has slices of limestone, wood windows, voncrete, murals...honestly--the side of the bldg. is a work of art with sense--tasteful....not whacked. I've been craving authentic Argentinian food for ages, so when I found myself in Austin, I decided to make reservations at Buenos Aires Cafe. I was really looking forward to having empanadas and panquque, as well as possibly indulging in a steak or parillada. We had dinner there last night. While it wasn't exactly what I was used to as far as Argentinian cuisine, it was fresh and tasty. The bread service included a delicious olive oil dip and cinnamon butter. I wish there had been more bread for the price, though. The empanadas we ordered (carne suave - ground beef) were the highlight of our meal (I didn't get to take a pic of them, because we scarfed them down). The chimichurri was really good, but was also $1 for a small metal container. I'm not used to paying for chimichurri, so I was a little taken aback, but it complimented the empanadas so well. I ordered the gnocchi as my meal, and while it was delicious, there weren't that many gnocchi...it was chock-full of artichoke hearts and mushrooms. It was a little overpriced for the amount of food I received, but it was tasty nonetheless. What saved our dinner from being just ok was dessert: the panqueque with dulce de leche was exactly like I remembered...two crepes with a sugary crust and delicious dulce de leche filling. The service was also great, as was the wine. They have a happy hour that looks promising and we will most likely check it out the next time we are in town. I'm torn....... A 3/5 star review is tough because it doesn't say much. Having grown up in Argentina, I can tell you that the food is OKAY. Overall experience was that portions were small, expensive and not as delicious as I was hoping. The Empanadas saved the night. CONS: -$6 for 1 empanada is just too expensive. -Pricing in general felt off by a few dollars. The food quality was good, but not great. -The milanesa was small, cold, and the flavor was not right. It was topped by a slice of ham (maybe a honey hickory ham) that threw the flavor of the whole dish off. The tomato sauce on top was flavorless. Tasted like it came straight out of a can. When the mashed potatoes are better than the entree, you know something is not right. -The Lomo sandwich was great in flavor, but there was one small, sad slice of meat in the sandwich... We are talking about a $22 sandwich. I'll end on a positive note. PROS: -While expensive, the empanadas were great in taste. I wish they were less oily and that the dough was a bit firmer. All were sooooo delicious and paired well with some fruity sangria, which was super refreshing after a hot summer afternoon kayaking. The best part is the chimichurri sauce it came with; not sure if it was just me but am I imagining that the quality of oil used in the sauce is superior to all? Wish I'd saved room for dessert because the treats in the display case were totally calling my name. I can't speak to very much of the menu because I just had takeout and ordered two empanadas, the vegetarian one with caramelized onions and cheese, and the vegan one with lentils. They are both very good, but the onion and cheese one was the winner for me. read more
