I loved all the interactive games where you can learn while having fun. Building race cars, feeling a tornado force wind, engineering building paper rockets that soared through the room...so many fun projects. The exhibit rooms are spacious with interesting facts explaining what you're seeing from woven baskets to a giant polar bear. We explored space and the time of the dinosaurs. I was there with a 6 month old and I have to say they have it set up nice for parents to care for young ones from places for diaper changes to breast feeding. Impressive. There's a large room for quiet time and a snack bar for all your children's needs. Easy free parking is a plus, no hassle getting in or out. This museum is generally designed for young children, even though it isn't clearly marketed that way. And the items more designed for adults are very poorly designed. The artifacts exhibit was fascinating except to learn more about the items, I usually had to look at an item, walk to the end of the display, read what it was, then walk back to look at another item, walk back to the end of the display etc. The information about the items should be included within view of those items like it was in the animal exhibits, instead it felt like a total afterthought. For another section of that exhibit, you had to find the item on a touchscreen and select it for more info. I go to a museum to avoid screens, not have to interact with them! There were a lot of digital screens throughout the exhibits unfortunately. It was also full of children running wild. Kids yelling, screaming, running around, playing hide and seek in and grossly misusing the exhibits, while unaccompanied by adults. There were no docents or anyone to stop the children or enforce any modicum of museum etiquette. This made it very hard to focus on the exhibits (what little was interesting for adults and able to be read). Many exhibits also felt a bit dirty. In the machine/in motion exhibit, I wanted to try using the buttons to lift an item, sort of like a claw machine. It felt like forever until there were no children using it, but when it finally opened up, I was so disappointed to find that the buttons had all faded off so you couldn't see what direction you were moving the claw, and it was just gross and so sticky to the touch. With so many children touching everything, I didn't see a single museum staff member walking around to ensure exhibits were being used properly or cleaning the touch-based sections.... so unsafe. Their new building mini-exhibit was literally just a bunch of visibly dirty blue blocks to put together, with no content for adults. I was able to attend for free and felt it was okay based on that value (mostly for the childhood nostalgia and memories), but if I had had to pay admission, I would be requesting my money back. They either need to put more effort into creating interesting and content/info-centered adult-focused exhibits and stop children from running and screaming through the museum, or re-market themselves clearly as a children's museum. read more

For an attended toddler care service I guess the museum is fine but we didn't find much of interest as adults. There were a ton of children running around and none of the exhibits or displays had more than 2 paragraphs at most of interpretive info. Stopped in on my way home for a quick little visit. It was super busy with all of the kids off of school this week. The science museum is an absolute blast! From the interactive exhibits to the knowledgeable staff, there was something for everyone. The hands-on activities were especially fun and engaging, and the educational displays were informative and interesting. They have a super cool traveling exhibit on Virtual Reality which I wish I had more time to fully explore. Stopped into the science museum on our way home from Niagara and we were not disappointed! They had a great variety of exhibits and I loved seeing all the fossils and animal taxidermy pieces. I was amazed by the size of this museum and the variety it had to offer and would definitely recommend going here for a visit. Although 2 floors of the museum were closed due to Covid, there was still a lot to see and we spent over two hours exploring! On the second floor was the Golden Mummies temporary exhibit which was extremely interesting! It paired science with history, and had several mummies on display. There were even a few interactive displays that you could use safely with a stylus, provided upon entry to the museum. Other exhibits on the second floor included: - A biodiversity exhibit, featuring many different types of animals. - An extinction exhibit - A giant room of miscellaneous artifacts from around the world - A health exhibit sponsored by Independent Health, featuring many interactive displays I think the coolest (and weirdest) artifact on display was the mummified cat, found in the wall of a Buffalo, NY home. I still believe the Buffalo Museum of Science is a great bang for your buck. The last time we visited was about a year or so before the pandemic and my nephew asked to come again. Honestly, I probably enjoyed it as much as he did. Favs: Independent Health section and the weather exhibit (esp the storm stimulator and weather forecaster video!). We spent 2.5 hours here before I convinced him to leave because I was torn out. We didn't even go up to the fourth floor to see the space exhibit. There's SO much to do here. The science museum is a local treasure. Aside from the special exhibits the regular collection is fascinating. We are so lucky to have the Golden Mummies of Egypt and you still have a chance to view them...until January. Get there now! They are doing a great job even during this pandemic and with only one floor open to the public you can still spend an entire afternoon or more even if you don't see the mummy exhibit. We have been within this museum years ago with friends and it IS massive and consists of several floors. Our most recent experience was last last month when we found out about their night at the museum event and access to their roof. We want to see the Buffalo skyline and SKY at night so we purchased tickets. I called them the same day we purchased the tickets onlineto ask about our goal of getting to the roof and if we could take our tripods. The voice at the end stated she would transfer my call to a desk of the person who could answer my question, BUT she's not in and just leave a message and she'll get back to me soon. LIARs!! It' been some time since I left my message on that phone voicemail - in another week it'll be almost a MONTH! I have since emailed several times and received no reply. Yesterday 11 Sept I called again and talked to a young man who told me he'd ensure my question was directed to someone who will get back to me soon. Liars again! For an organization and place that deals with people on a constant basis, this place's people has NO concept of communication with their area residents nor people in general! If you want to get more detailed info from this place, you can forget it! Might be a great place, might have great displays and exhibits, BUT their people/staff are idiots who have no sense of community or communication. All they want is your money then ignore you, which seems to be a western NY attitude! Museum okay for their exhibits, TERRiBLE for their ability or desire to answer questions or maintain contact with the community, AND if you have a question to be answered, ask some kindergarten kid on the street instead because THE museum will not answer or contact you about your question!! First floor rest room probably is, but can't say from experience. Awesome taxidermy exhibits, and many that look stuffed, but aren't -- like Stuffy the Buffalo. My husband's work had a Christmas party here, and I'm so glad because I never felt compelled to visit otherwise. Prices are reasonable if you aren't here for a party: $13 for adults and $10 for kids. I'm not sure it's a great value without children, but with children, you definitely get your money's worth. There's a play area with everything from hand puppets and dress up to a water table and those building magnets. My sons are eight, but it still held their attention and they wanted to go more than once. Dead zoos aren't my favorite, but they do have an impressive assortment of specimens. They also have the largest collection of insects I've seen in all the science museums we've visited, including large nests of stinging insects, some with cross sections and insects mounted inside. They don't have a lot of fossils but what they do have is impressive: Seymour the mastodon, Stanley the albertasaurus, a triceratops, one or two allosauruses, the skull of a T Rex, and the jaws of a megalodon. Amazing rock and seashell collections. There's a lot of hands on exhibits, like one to build cars, then race them, and another to build structures, then see what happens when you trigger an earthquake. My sons enjoyed the storm simulator, as well as the "TV station" for a weather report. The only thing that would make it better is if they somehow combined the two. I was most impressed with an exhibit with a large sphere that changes to the moon and different planets using a touch screen. I've never seen anything like that before. We will probably be back to visit the observatory one of these days. We didn't experience the theater. I don't understand complaints about the "gift shop." So many places force you to exit through a gift shop full of overpriced merchandise. Here it's tucked away in the back with a few items so you aren't chasing after children captivated by a bunch of overpriced stuff when you're ready to leave. I go to museums for the learning experience, not the gift shop. The museum is small but spacious. Everything looks very well kept. read more

The Art of the Brick is an incredible display of art at the Buffalo Museum of Science! Just wow! All made of LEGO. Artist Nathan Sawaya is most talented. An attorney in his former life. You must see this exhibit. Stunning, most unusual and beautiful. So we went all the way to Paris to the Louvre last year to quench our thirst for art. Many of the most famous paintings were replicated by Sawaya in LEGO! Could have saved s few pennies, huh?! My daughter and I love art and museums. We often review museums on Yelp especially during our travels. But folks, our local science museum is outstanding. We have many hidden treasures in our hometown and this is one of them. You can easily spend the whole day to see it properly. So educational and fun. read more

I like our science museum. The exhibits they bring in are always interesting (my favorites so far have been the Lego exhibit and the CSI one). The architecture in this museum is great too. If you go up to the top floor to the observatory (sadly it's always been closed when I have been there) you can get a great view of the city of Buffalo. Some of the taxidermy animals (like Stuffy the Buffalo) are even wearing masks because of COVID. I do wish they would upgrade some of the exhibits on the 2nd and 3rd floor, they have been the same since I was a teen, which was longer ago than I care to admit. Also, the gift shop is right at the admission desk, only 6 or so items for sale, kinda sad for tourists who want to bring something home. Overall, like the zoo, it's not a bad attraction, just needs some updating . read more

Went to see the Golden Mummy exhibit during Covid-19. The only floors open were the first floor where the entrance is and the 2nd floor. Everywhere had signs saying 6 feet apart and areas were closed at certain times for cleaning. Upon entering, they gave each guest a stylus to use for the interactive buttons, so no one touched the same areas. The Golden Mummy exhibit was behind doors and dark with spotlight like lights throughout. It gave off an earie and appropriate experience. The music you hear in the commercials was exactly how you felt. They had a few about a minute-long educational video that told history on the Gods to the dig site events to find the mummies. It was amazing to see how detailed the in the sarcophagus' and how preserved after all these years everything still is. They also had different statues and pottery that was used to honor the Gods to everyday life. The exhibit also had interactive activities which were fun to do and learn from. It was amazing to see in detail how paintings, sculptures, and everything still looks younger than it is. During this visit, you were also able to visit the areas with artifacts, biodiversity, and rethink extinct. The artifacts area had things from all over the world which was cool to see. The biodiversity area was full of animals stuffed to show you different animals from around the world. My favorite during this visit was the rethink extinct area. They have different skeletons from dinosaurs and other animals, which was cool to see. I really enjoy dinosaurs and outside the room area there was 2 workers telling and showing the difference in dinosaur skulls to show what kind of diet they ate. As we were leaving, someone was doing demonstration involving dry ice. First how the smoke changed from liquid and then watching it become a dome after closing off the bowl with soap-soaked string. My brother was able to pop it and watching the smoke come out of the bubble was so cool. I cannot wait to return when Covid-19 is over to see the other areas in the museum, especially the planetarium. read more

The Buffalo Museum of Science has something for everyone, kids and adults alike. I've been visiting since my childhood and it's always been something I've enjoyed. When every floor is open, there are quite a few themed exhibits that have permanently made a home in the Museum. Astronomy, the ecosystem, and human biology are among of the subjects covered by these exhibits. While they're pretty dated, they're still fun to walk through. You'll learn something new every time! Recently, we visited during the Arctic Dinosaurs traveling exhibit. It was pretty cool (no pun intended)! I do appreciate how frequently they swap out their traveling exhibits and I think it keeps the museum as an option for a rainy day. They host events for families, and monthly they'll do an event at night geared towards adults, which is unique. You don't see many museums doing programming like that, and while I've never been, I always appreciate the option! Overall, the Buffalo Museum of Science is a nice option for those visiting the areas, and those life-long residents who haven't been in awhile. read more

My friend and I went to the Science After Hours Make it Festive! night. It was such a great event. You get to tour the museum with a beer, wine, or hard seltzer water in hand sans kids. This particular Science After Hours included making various crafts like an ornament, a star clock, copper oxide paintings, and a sugar scrub. It was a lot of fun. All of the instructors were amazing. They had so much knowledge, enthusiasm, and were so friendly and helpful. I really enjoyed talking with them. Definitely check this event out when they offer it again, or a similar one. read more

I think this has been a staple of every childhood that grew up in Buffalo. Whether you were lucky enough to attend a field trip in elementary school or family. I am sure much has changed, but its still the same as I remember when I was a kid. Since moving to Buffalo roughly 2 years ago I have literally never heard a single person talk about or even mention the Buffalo Museum of Science. I've been to Science Center's in Hartford, Toronto, and Boston and have enjoyed them so when my friends from Connecticut were in town this past weekend I decided it would be a good time to check both the museum and the new telescope on top of the museum out. When you walk in you stand in a giant room which has a dinosaur and some smaller exhibits to give you a small taste of whats ahead. Once you start actually entering some of the rooms and hallways you start seeing how large this place actually is. There's an area dedicated to animals which gives you life size exhibits to look at which is very, very cool. You have the artifact room which displays pottery, blankets, masks, and tons of other cool things from all time periods. You have an area full of games and physical hands on activities to stimulate the brain like building a structure and seeing if it could handle an earthquake, building a little car and seeing how fast it can go, among other activities. My favourite of the rooms (well, favourite non space themed room) was the robot room. The robot room gives kids the chance to build or add-on to the large rocket ship in the main room. You have tons of cardboard and computer parts to put anything you want together and that is awesome. Me and my friends spent some time building a steering wheel and computer monitor that lights up (adults can have fun too). The top floor is for outer space and is full of cool interactive exhibits leading up to the grand finale on the room. When we went a bunch of people had telescopes set up to look at the moon and such and luckily we got wrist bands to come back at night and take a look through the big telescope. When we came back we waited in a big line that eventually led to looking at Jupiter which was pretty cool. A few of the smaller scopes set up by people had you getting a good glance at Venus, Saturn, and of course the moon. Overall, I fell in love with the Buffalo Science Center and I can't wait to go back. It's awesome having such a good place so close and within the city limits. This is not the Science Museum of years ago. I think it's been made larger and brighter, lighter, generally more inviting. Tom D would be happy to see the hand sanitizer dispensers all around. He'd be less happy about the crumbs I saw though, more on that later. I came for the mummies. It's open until Oct sometime (extended a few weeks from original close date of Sept 21). Then it moves on to other cities. Both the Science Museum and the Buffalo Historical Society helped create this exhibit, working with about 10 other organizations from around the world. I enjoyed the mummies. It's a pretty "grown up" exhibit I felt, yet they seem to have school groups often around lunchtime. I assume there is a "child's version" lecture to go with that but I saw only the "adult version". The museum also has a nice area that teaches you about the history (science wise) of this area. From before the last ice age. There is a large children's area, from the toddlers to the older ones. Interactive. The kids I saw were having a blast. Independent Health has joined the museum for a display all about YOU, the person. Healthy choices. How does the body work? Genetics and what they mean. Learn about the solar system and how it affects weather on Earth. And of course the BUG section. Everything you wanted to know and see. And more. But really everything that small child in your world wants to see. Creepy. Crawly. Flying. It's all covered. On to the cafe. This is a small cafe. It's not the focus of the museum, but it offers a place for a coffee break if needed or a sandwich for lunch. There is food aimed at kids. There are adult sandwich choices. And some pizza choices. All made to order in front of you. Not a huge selection, but something for everyone (including vegetarian) and all reasonably priced. With tables. Which is where the crumbs come into it. There were crumbs on the two tables I went to sit at. I did not order food, just needed a moment to sit (which you are welcome to do without food too). But there were crumbs. Both of the cafe workers were very busy, which explains it, but just calling it out. There is a store here as well. Not your usual museum store. But a store with games, both for kids and adults, puzzles, fun fact books and more. I did not buy anything, or even browse that long, but I do expect to be back when I need an interesting gift for a child, or perhaps an adult. They have some of the more typical things too, pens, little replicas etc. Some fundamentals: Very pleasant staff all around. All smiling. Nice little science museum. Things to know before you go: -If there is a special event going on, parking can be a pain, but its free. -The first time I came I had no idea there was even a third floor because you have to take the elevator or a hidden stairwell to get there. That was a total shame because the 3rd floor is actually my favorite. Bottom line: Worth the admission price, and fun for adults and kids, but the layout is disjointed and confusing. Four floors of fun! We came here for Beerology last night for the second time in two years. The beer at the event was cool, but the real star of the show was the museum itself. They have tons of interactive exhibits spread throughout the four floors of the museum and yesterday we tried to see them all. The second floor contains several large rooms filled with different rotating exhibits every time we come. This year we got to see one exhibit on animals, and another on gaming. The third floor seemed to focus mainly on weather, animals, and the human body. The fourth floor was all about outer space. This would be a great spot to bring the kids or even go on a light hearted date. Highly recommended! read more

It's a smaller museum, but they've been putting a lot of work into it and the new exhibits are a lot of fun. I've been going to their After Hours adults only events for about a year, and tried one SciNight event so far and they're a lot of fun! Whether you have a nerdy side, like me; just want to do something different that might be educational; or say you got wine buzzed at the museum - give it a shot sometime!
