It's an easy drive from the lower townsite, up a hill and through some residential areas. The course is located right by a park, so there is a lot of easy parking, and a basket right by the road to let you know you are in the correct area. The course winds through the woods, with well marked baskets and tees. There is enough challenge to feel enjoyable, but as a recreational player that doesn't have a high skill level, I loved that many of the holes were short enough for me to get par. This isn't something I've experienced on other courses and it made it extra fun. The woods and park area were beautiful, and I'd highly recommend making a visit. We talked to some other players on the course that had stopped in from other cities, and they also commented how much they enjoyed the course. Pro tip: don't forget bug repellent!

Climbers love crowd-isolating jargon, so you'll often hear it shortened all the way down to "The Bugs", or, worse "DA BUGZ!" It's a great place to wait out the notoriously fickle weather in the area. It's run by the delightfully-friendly Alpine Club of Canada. (it's cheaper if you're a member, and if you plan on staying here for more than 5 days, the membership practically pays for itself) It's got: Power (WUT?!) Sleeping pads Running water (they say you probably shouldn't drink it straight up, but we did, #YOLO) Pots and pans Tables Lots of climbing books to study Posters of Conrad Kain doing his famous pose Burners for cooking It does not have: Plumbing (outhouse only, sorry) Bedding (other than the squishy pads) Food for sale (although people hiking out might give you some if you're nice...) You need to bring: Sleeping bag Food Adult beverages (whisky for light weight, beer for a strong back) Climbing gear Clothes Some people choose to camp rather than stay in the hut. There are a couple of reasons they generally do this: - They are cheap - They came last minute and the hut was booked - They desperately want to have "dirtbag credentials" because they slept in a tiny, humid nylon box rather than a large, dry wooden one - They want to be much closer to the climbing routes The last point is the one I empathize most with. By staying at the hut, you are adding another 1,000 ft of gain to the beginning and end of every climbing day. Is it worth it? If the weather is iffy, I'd say: "definitely".

However, the views are so stunning at the end that I'd recommend it to anyone in the area! You'll even get to climb on some steel "ladders" that have been permanently embedded in rock for the harder sections. Just be sure to wrap your car in chicken wire. Apparently porcupines will eat you out of a reliable car.

I rode a mule named Dreamwalker, who was very sweet. Riding a mule wasn't so different from riding a horse. The only difference I found was that he had a huge drive to eat. No matter how much I tried to pull his head up, he would resist and bring his head down for his favorite snack, alfalfa. The terrain wasn't too rough for an hour ride. It was actually very scenic! Wild flowers were everywhere and the view down to the river valley was gorgeous. At a few points I did feel a little nervous because the trail was a little too narrow and the drop did seem a little treacherous; but, I would do it all over again if I could.

Bugaboo Spire is world-famous in the climbing community, for good reason…read more It contains a coveted 50 classic climb. (5.8) It also contains the historic "Kain Route" (5.6). It's a fun moderate climb. The crux is "the gendarme" a "5.6" move that is extremely trick and very exposed. You'll wonder how the hell Conrad Kain did it in crappy old-timey leather boots! Any of these routes are a LONG day from the hut, so make sure you start early. (before the sun)

This hike is listed on a number of local websites and tourist brochures, and after talking to…read moresomeone at a visitor information center, my husband and I decided to try it out. All the descriptions list this hike as "easy", and as someone who is in pretty good shape but not an experienced hiker, I would have described this trail as being of "moderate" difficulty. The area is a little remote, and I would have felt more comfortable with bear spray or bear bells to scare off any locals. There is a small parking lot in the area, and the trail is located at the wooden trailhead sign (not the wider vehicle path heading into the forest in the opposite direction). The trail is steep and narrow in a number of sections, so much so that I wondered if we had the wrong trail at one point, and in one area the trail snakes along side of a slope with a fairly significant drop on one side and a sharp upslope on the other. Good hiking shoes are highly recommended for extra traction and stability. That being said, the views of the falls at the end are spectacular. The waterfall is roaring, powerful, and totally awesome. The return trip took us just about two hours, with about 15 minutes at the falls themselves. It's a great shorter hike, and only 20 minutes from Radium Hot Springs.
