The dining room and bar areas are nice and clean, bathrooms are clean and you can see into the kitchen which also looks clean. The food is good, not amazing. The service in the bar and dining room is great and friendly. The views are great from the bar and dining room looking at the Rainy River. They have a nice patio to enjoy when the weather and bugs are cooperating.

Our guides were always cheery and pleasant, even when they would have to keep replacing the many jigs we kept losing in the rocks. Shore luches were always a necessity. Dining room meals were always great, the portions hearty, and staff friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, fish are not guaranteed, but a great time is! Whenever I hear of someone headed to LOTW for fishing, I try to steer them to Ballard's. Fish on!

Also, don't be out on the patio after dark, bugs and especially mosquitoes are pretty vicious after dark. Boats, equipment, captains, and guides are provided. I was leery of paying $120 for a 2 hr boat tour, but it turned out to be well worth it. First week of October is already past the busy season and there wasn't much in the way of fall colors on the lake yet, but it was a truly beautiful ride nonetheless. Our guide Tim grew up on the lake and was not only full of information about the incredible history (and prehistory) of the region, but had his own stories to share that added such a depth and personal touch to the experience. I could have happily listened to him all day. If I can make it back someday for the 6 hour, I hope Tim is my guide once again.
