Why do you charge $3-5 for a small box of spices when Khyber Spice Invader can sell me the same amount for 10 or 20 cents? Here's a tip - head out to your local $2 shop, buy up a huge number of tiny sealable containers and a packet of stickers, then go and stock up on every single spice you've ever used or wanted. I guarantee you won't spend more than $10 doing so at Khyber Spice Invader. While you're there you can also choose from a range of Indian vegetables, curry bases and sauces, all cheap as well. Worth the trip out to the suburbs, every time!

The fresh produce has been reduced drastically, to the point where it should be removed altogether. No one wants to see lonely fruit and vege. The hot food Chaat where you couldn't help but buy hot aromatic Indian snacks has gone but even worse, all the cabinets and counters are still there to remind you what you're missing. All international grocery products have also been taken away so now the range is exclusively Indian with literally two bottles of soy sauce in the whole place, no sushi supplies, noodles or anything else not from the Subcontinent. It's all very well being altruistic but surely diversification is a good economic decision? Maybe they only have an import line from India. Whatever, it's disappointing as this place has a carpark out the back and used to be pretty convenient. The nice man behind the counter tells me they are considering a hot food takeaway counter but I don't think Sandringham needs more lukewarm pre-made curry. You can get cheap two-for-one milk and this is one of the few places where you can get a green and a blue bottle in the deal - what can I say, the little things make me happy. I'm not sure how to feel about the rodent traps because at least they are trying to catch the little buggars right? I'd just rather not know about it. The absolute best thing about this place is the masalas - you need never struggle through attempting a curry at home again; there's a spice mix for all your favourites and many you've never heard of at around $3 each. OK, maybe not a bucket, but quite a lot. Mahadeo's is a spicy wonderland; it smells amazing, and it has aisles and aisles of spices, dried herbs, lentils, and other bulk food items like flour (including rice and chickpea flour). I can often be found wandering around here in a daze overwhelmed by all the choice. There's also a fridge dedicated to different plain yoghurt and paneer, as well as freezers with chapattis, rotis and the like, and a small range of produce - mostly things more difficult to find in other greengrocers like turmeric, small eggplants or curry leaves. If you're not sure of where something is, there's always someone on hand to help you out, and pro-tip: get a samosa if they've got some in the warmer: you won't be disappointed.

They sell some produce which looks about the same prices as Countdown, but much less packaging, and this appears to be a family owned shop. I love supporting small businesses, and this is my new go-to store for spices and curry leaves for all of our indian cooking! They also had some candies and snacks that my boyfriend remembered eating in India that I'd never heard of. I loved the fast paced Indian music playing in the background, and if you're in the market for Indian hair oils, this is your place. It's not fancy, and it's not flashy either, but it has everything you'll need for any indian dish, and it's authentic AF. I'll definitely be back many more times.

Although I had noticed it in passing I guess I never really paid much attention to what it was all about, it looked like just another dairy with all the milk signs and vegies spilling out onto the footpath for sale. Inside however I was delighted to find some bulk food - spices, grains and nuts, in good quality (I can tell the freshness by the smell of the spices, colour of the dahl and appearance of the nuts). I love to cook, but this year have lost the passion for it, feeling like it is more of a chore than a pleasure. So, in the last few days I have tried to reinvigorate the foodie in me by puling out some interesting recipes. Tonight it will be a tandoori chicken with lots of vegetables and rice. I bought a bag full of goodies from here today and it all cost less than $10. The staff, and a regular customer whom happened to be a chef that passed on some hints to me, were very friendly and helped me feel a bit more at ease in a new and quite foreign shop. To give them credit, they now display a B food hygiene rating so things may have picked up in the interim. DH Supermarket sell a big range of fruit and veggies so if you are in the area and can't get to another fruit and veggie store it will do the trick. They also have lots of grocery items including an extensive Asian range of products. Another plus for DH Supermarket is that their prices are low. Parking is right outside the big yellow store.
