He gave me hot fries (totally delicious and by far my favorite with light traces of jalapeno heat and onions), a fresh spring roll, and a meat (thank you so much for listening to me on non-vegetarian) bun mee sandwich. Hungry but not starving and wandering around during the holidays... how would we ever find a place for a snack? Yelp to the rescue. Saw reviews and that it was only a few blocks away. We headed over anxious to grab a quick snack before leaving to head back to San Jose. We weren't hungry enough to tackle one sandwich each, so we opted to share. The cashier suggested the Lemongrass Pork when I asked for an opinion between that and another option. Also, I asked that anything spicy be left off the sandwich which they easily accommodated. The seating was plentiful, even during a busy Saturday afternoon, and the restaurant and restroom were super clean. The staff was polite and helpful and delivered our sandwich promptly. Though I agree with the recommendation that the pork was delicious, the veggies stole the show. The crispness and pickled flavoring was perfect and complimented the pork perfectly. I wish I was hungry enough to have tackled a whole sandwich so we could have tried two different ones. I will add this to my list of stops when I crave a snack, or meal, nearby. read more

3.5 stars- rounding up to 4. Stopped by here with my hubby while in SF. We were hungry but couldn't decide on what to eat. Thought we would give it a try, esp since there was a decent amount of diners sitting inside and outside. Oddly enough, we both ordered the Belly bun (can't go wrong with pork belly right???) but my hubby added hard boiled egg. He claims the egg did nothing for the sandwich and literally fell out trying to take a bite. But we both agree that there are GENEROUS portions of pork belly that were surprisingly good and juicy. The bread felt a bit hard but I understood why...it's gotta hold up that sandwich with all that pork belly! Although I wish there was more daikon and cucumber, and cilantro (plenty of carrot!!, needs a little bit of proportion) it still was a pretty good sandwich. We added a side of salt and pepper fries- great pairing!! I couldn't stop eating it. Perfect crunch and seasoning. It came with some ketchup but I liked it by itself. Our sandwiches were $8-$9 (add egg) each, most of your local Vietnamese restaurants charge under $5 but you're in the city...expect to pay extra. I had half an hour to kill between a dentist appointment and the first express commuter bus home. I'd been craving egg rolls, and Bun Mee came up. 3 star reviews don't usually make me eager to try a new place, but I saw that they had happy hour from 3-6pm. $5 beer and wine is definitely a deal for the Union Square area. $5.75 for 2 crispy egg rolls though... They were just ok, kind of weird texturally as the meat and noodles were formed into a tube. The nuoc cham was mostly sugary tasting. The wine brought up a serious question. Is a large pour of wine still an exciting thing when the wine is kind of bad? Look, it was a generous pour of wine, especially for $5 near the FiDi, just, it had obviously been sitting around for awhile IS THIS still a good thing? Reader, I drank it. I'm glad that I came here with some of my best friends because things that would generally annoy me, made me laugh instead. When I arrived, it was around 6:30. My friends had gotten there just a few minutes before, and they said the cashier gave them discounted beers because of happy hour. Then I quickly went to order, and the cashier told me that happy hour was over. What? I knew it was, but why the uneven pricing? So dumb. Beer is still cheap anyways, though they ran out of the one I originally requested. When it came time to ordering food, I had my eye on the tasty-sounding Hawker Bowl, with fried egg, spicy cucumbers, vietnamese herbs, bok choy, pickled carrots and daikon, cilantro, spicy mayo, and fried shallots over garlic rice. Apparently jalapeños are extra, but it's a generous amount. My friend ordered some chili fries to share at the table. Holy crap, the food here is spicy! Eventually we caved in and couldn't eat the jalapeños, but everything was filling and delicious. There's a decent amount of space inside the restaurant, though I can imagine it gets busy in the middle of a weekday. They have an extensive menu, and I'd like to try more of it someday. Surprisingly, I find myself giving Bun Mee four stars, even though I absolutely hated the service here. Totally lifeless and confused. But I guess it's an evening in FiDi so who wouldn't be? I haven't had a horrible tasting sandwich from here, but depending on who makes it, it can be very inconsistent in terms of flavor and proportion of ingredients. I've tried 3 of the sandwiches here - Belly - Braised Kurobuta pork belly, salted radish relish, shaved onion, pickled carrot and daikon, cucumber, jalapenos, cilantro. Combo - Grilled lemongrass Kurobuta pork, paté de campagne, mortadella, garlic mayo, shaved onion, pickled carrot & daikon, cucumber, jalapenos, cilantro. Crispy Tofu - Crispy organic tofu, soy mayo, shaved onion, carrots and daikon, cauliflower relish, jalapenos, Vietnamese herbs, and fried shallots. The common flavor of all sandwiches, other than the pickled carrots and daikon is that they all really taste like sandwich and not necessary a bahn mi. I like the combo sandwich, but a couple times didn't have much of the pate. Other times there was a strong vinegar flavor, and other times, there wasn't much flavor. One time I got so much mayo in my "crispy" tofu sandwich. Another time the fried shallots overpowered everything and was really salty. The tofu wasn't really crispy and flavorful, so I prefer the combo and the belly over that one in terms of flavor and balance. Bread has mostly been crispy though. Their bowls look really good too. Maybe I'm just a bit jaded by SF food prices, but I thought the prices at Bun Mee are pretty reasonable. You can get full for around $8-12, which is almost unheard of, especially in a more central area like Market St. It's a really simple restaurant without any fancy decor, but that's okay because I'm not expecting to spend too long eating bahn mi and related foods. It's decently clean, which is important to me, but seating is limited, so make sure to come early, or at a non-peak hour. I ordered the hawker bowl, fries, and the shrimp and pork summer rolls. In a city where it feels like restaurants constantly let you down by being unremarkable despite having more than 4 stars on Yelp, it was a nice change to eat something simple that tasted... good. It's good. It didn't blow me away, but sometimes you don't need that. Expect to come here for simple food that delivers exactly what it promises, and I think you need to be grounded like that from time-to-time. Would I come back? Probably. The combo comes with all that including mortadella(had no idea what this was until I googled it), grilled pork, pate, and house mayo. So mortadella is suppose to be like cha which is basically Vietnamese pork ham. I'm not sure if it was trying to be cha or suppose to be, but it didn't taste like it. I've been eating cha since I was born pretty much and thought their version was aite. The sandwich itself wasn't bad overall, but I was wasn't a big fan of their pate (and I love pate). The service was fast and the prices are reasonable for being in SF (even though I can get a better bahn mi from Lee's sandwiches the the South Bay for like half the price). Ordered the lemongrass pork bahn mi sandwich and sweet potato fries. For the sandwich, the texture of bread was good and bread was fresh. The meat was flavorful and there was an okay amount of it however, the carrots and daikon were barely pickled and almost tasted like regular shredded carrots and daikon. Additionally, there was barely any daikon so it was mainly just carrots which was a minus for me. The sweet potato fries were not very crispy but they had a good flavor and came with an interesting sauce. My coworker had the noodle bowl which looked pretty good and said she comes to this restaurant often so maybe the noodle bowl is the way to go. The place was pretty busy at lunch time in the financial district and all of the spots were taken. My typical banh mi experience is a server who's older than my grandmother, who knows as much English as I know Vietnamese, in a dingy place with a "B" rating from the board of health, that takes cash only, and has one flickering fluorescent light. They're cheap and they're no joke and they're AWESOME. So I walked in with a raised eyebrow. Then I saw the fusion-esque offerings and the other one raised as well. Seriously? Sloppy Joe bahn mi? Someone someone Vietnamese is rolling over in their something. That's just sacrilegious. A long-time fan of heresy too, I bit. Figuratively, then literally. I'll be damned... (see, told you about heresy)... it was friggin' delicious. Inauthentic, unrealistic, completely invented in a test kitchen a week ago somewhere. But Jeebus, that was a good sandwich. Could I heave an audible sigh? Yes I can, and it can sound like Chris Christie after any recent press conference. That's the palpable sound of meh when I found myself waiting in line for what turned out to be faux banh mis. Yes, what the faux. That be Bun Mee. Oh yes, I've been to the other Bun Mee on Fillmore (review: http://bit.ly/1hknE5G), so there were no surprises offered here. But the lunchtime crowds were a bit ridiculous for what I view as overpriced sandwiches. You just have to travel two BART stations and make a right onto Larkin to get a better, more authentic banh mi for $4.50 less. Despite a relative abundance of ingredients, the sandwiches at Bun Mee just don't have the soul of Saigon Sandwich to make the premium price worthwhile. When I finally got up to the register, I ended up ordering the $6.75 Bun Mee Combo, which offers layers of grilled lemongrass Kurobuta pork, paté de campagne, mortadella, garlic mayo, shaved onion, pickled carrot and daikon, cucumber, jalapenos and cilantro, all in a crusty, hollowed-out French baguette (photo: http://bit.ly/1jGCy6y). There are indeed quality ingredients, but it was frankly almost too packaged for my taste given the staff has to prepare for the massive lunch rush. I've been spoiled living in the South Bay, and not even in close to Little Saigon in San Jose. I got the lemongrass pork bahn mi because I initially was going to get the Hawker bowl, but then didn't want to pay that much for lunch so I went with the much more reasonable bahn mi prices (which, for bahn mi, are so expensive!! But so are all the other prices in San Francisco). I was kinda excited for the bahn mi since lemongrass pork, that's almost like, guaranteed to be good yeah? It has lemongrass flavorings! Or well, should have. The pork was disappointingly bland - couldn't taste the seasonings, couldn't taste the pork. I wish I had added more sriracha, since at least it would have tasted like that. I felt like I was eating a sandwich just like... for sustenance, the flavors were so bland. Maybe it was an off day in the kitchen. Maybe their other meats are better. I think the only thing going for it was the fact that it was like, STUFFED. Was actually kind of impressed with the amount in the sandwich itself, definitely a good value for what you're paying for. As a concept, Bun Mee is great since things are easy to order, quick, and compared to other places around it and the amount of food you get in a bahn mi, cheap. But the only taste in my mouth was disappointment. When you see "Bun Mee" on some random hipster's blog titled "Best Banh Mi in the City!!!!," you know: 1) Not to trust the blog 2) There is a real problem with San Francisco not having enough authentic Banh Mi shops. Anyway, Bun Mee is one of those places I kind of poke fun at every time I pass by it. They can't possibly have delicious Banh Mi here. But like FreshRolls, I wanted to be proven wrong, and I really have no right to make fun of them until I try it. I stopped by here after not wanting to find another place to eat. I see that they have 2 vegetarian options. The Crispy Tofu, and the Eggplant one. Eggplant in Banh Mi is really weird and very American, but I get that this is a 'modern' take on Vietnamese street food. I got the Crispy Tofu and it is vegan friendly with their soy mayo. It's about $7, which again, overpriced for a "Banh Mi," but I'm paying for a clean place to sit, open atmosphere, routine health inspections, and these college student's tuition. My overall impression of the sandwich is that it was surprisingly good! Soft, but crispy bread, lots of pickled carrots and daikon, and the soy mayo and spread is actually pretty tasty. They literally only put 3 leaves of cilantro on my sandwich; they treat it as more of a 'garnish' than an ingredient-which really annoyed me. People either really love or hate cilantro. I love it. So I asked for more cilantro and they hooked it up with a small bowl of it. As I finished my sandwich, I noticed that I was still....hungry. I even had a snack about an hour before so I wasn't starving or anything. I don't think anyone can get full off of these sandwiches. I'm guessing meat might fill you up more, but the portions are still small. You'd have to go for the twice-as-expensive bowl to fill up. I guess I should have expected this, since it is in the heart of the financial district and on market street. The sandwich was ok. I'm not sure why but half of it was spicy?? The bread was super toasted and extremely crunchy. The chicken seemed to be a little greasy, but not that much sauce. I was pretty disappointed in this sandwich for the price. Excited that Bun Mee is so close to my work. I can come here even just to have their deadly chocolate coconut cookies. But it's a great quick lunch option. You can sit outdoors (much quieter than inside), but even indoors the atmosphere was winning: sociable, warm, community-minded. The beer & wine selection is limited, but for $3 1/2-5, no complaints. However, 2 stars for the ambiance and service. You order at the counter, but you better know what you want because the cashier can't answer any questions. Then they give you some of your drinks and bring the rest out. The food comes out later. The noise of people talking in the dining area is normal. But someone was running some kind of loud, grinding machine in the kitchen (the whole time) that was louder than all the people in the restaurant combined. We never figured out what it was. I arrived at 12:45 PM and the line was 10 people deep, I waited 5 minutes to get to the register and ordered the combo sandwich and salt n' peppa garlic fries. Then waited another 10 minutes for my order to come out. It was a quick process, which is something I really appreciate since I usually grab lunch and run back to the office to chow down. :) Combo Sandwich - it's main ingredients were grilled kurobuta pork and pâté. First off, the french roll was warm, crunchy and perfect. I was able to taste the pork with the pate along with all the other ingredients. And I must say, it was a tasty treat to be able to eat one of these. 5 STARS :) Salt and Pepper Garlic fries with Jalapenos - It wasn't the salt and pepper that I was expecting because usually there's a batter coating to go with salt and pepper fried food. So, I wasn't impressed, perhaps the garlic and jalapenos made the fries soggy, I don't like soggy. I still chomped all of them up but left all the jalapenos behind, those peppers gave it HEAT. 2.5 STARS The decor definitely has that designers thoughtful touches that mimic's what a true Bánh mì street vendor may look like in the streets of Vietnam. The shop looks modern and trendy with their gutted out high ceilings. You can't help but notice the chaotic web of wires that floats on their ceilings and dangles with industrial lighting. The red poster art on the wall bounces off a modernized vintage propaganda image but at the same time feels friendly communistic and playful. Service was friendly and efficient. Overall, I'm over the top infatuated by Bun Mee. And I have plans to eat EVERYTHING that's listed on their menu. Next up on the line-up...five spice chicken sandwich and ice coffee... Man, you San Franciscans are tough. Bun Mee is better than 3 stars. A quick glance through the Yelp reviews finds criticisms related primarily to 1) Authenticity, 2) Cost and 3) Decor. I think the counter to the the first two digs is that this isn't intended to be your typical $3 traditional Vietnamese sandwich - I thought the ingredients tasted of much higher quality than the prolific cheap run-of-the-mill banh mi (which are always delicious in their own right). And the pricing is still inexpensive relative to the other options in the area. These guys have their own take on the banh mi - I think what they are doing is great. My wife and I split The Combo, with grilled lemongrass Kurobuta pork, paté, mortadella, garlic mayo, onion, pickled carrot & daikon, cucumber, jalapeños and cilantro. We thought the sandwich was fantastic. The garlic mayo really brought the sandwich together. Big props. Was the experience perfect? Of course not. The chalkboard menu had misspellings, I wanted a smaller side but nothing caught my eye, and the drinks selection was lacking. When Bun Mee showed up on Market Street's ever-changing selection of eateries, I thought, cool, a new place to try for lunch. I kept putting it off because their lines deterred me. Initially I thought that must be a good sign, but then again, any half-decent place in the area has a line around lunchtime. When I gave it a try, it looked like a breath of fresh air compared to most banh mi shops. It was clean and organized. Obviously, they put a lot of effort into the graphic art theme. The prices do seem high compared to banh mi shops in the TL or upper FiDi and other banh mi carts roaming around SoMa. But when you take into consideration their location and overhead costs, their prices aren't so bad. Plus, when you compare the price of one of their banh mi to the price of any other random sandwich in the area, it may even be a bargain. $7.50 Combo w/ grilled pork, mortadella, pate, mayo, pickled carrots & daikon, cucumber, cilantro: All the ingredients of a good sandwich. When it comes to banh mi, I always go with the one with pate. I opted to go without the jalapenos. I would have preferred if the bread was toasted, because it was pretty chewy. The slivers of pickled carrots, daikon, and cucumber were nicely acidic and crunchy. The grilled pork was tasty, but also chewy. The best part was the sandwich had a good amount of meat. In this area, I didn't mind the price and it did fill me up. As a sandwich, it was quite good. For a banh mi, it didn't quite hit the spot. I think I just needed more crunch, and a little more pate. Well "Bun Mee" does the trick. Working here in FIDI, its hard to find a place that serves good bun mee. Of course its not comparable to my favorite Vietnamese sandwich in the tenderloin but it really does the trick. I love the decor of the restaurant and the fast service. They're also pretty friendly as well. I wish they put more pate or mayo into the sandwiches. Sometimes I think its just a bit to dry. I love their sweet potato fries as well as their salt and pepper fries. YUM! Its more pricey than a standard bun mee but its consider a cheap sandwich in the FIDI. read more

I stumbled upon this little lunch gem on my way to shopping on Market Street. First of all, during a busy lunch rush I noticed how clean the dining area was. Also, we were lucky enough to grab a table (and stools), so that was an added bonus. I wanted to have a light lunch so I settled on the pork/shrimp summer rolls and a mango salad. The mango salad was a bit too citrusy, but the summer rolls were excellent. The meal was a perfect light lunch. My lunch buddy ordered the combination sandwich and salt n pepper garlic fries. Both were excellent. We both noted that the fries weren't too garlicky, which was probably appreciated by the coworkers that we were later in a conference room with later that day. I took note of the bun and noodle bowl options on my way out and seriously went back the following day to try one. The Bun Noodle Bowl is quite large (I had leftovers). The chicken was grilled to perfection, the sauce was tasty, and the compliment of fresh veggies and vermicelli noodles creates an excellent dish. A Vietnamese sandwich joint that dares to be creative and deviate from the standard litany of flavors. The meat feels a little bit higher quality than the cheaper options around town. No need to complain about "authenticity" because they're trying to do their own thing anyway. Mama Tran's Crispy Egg Rolls: It's no Tu Lan, but most places aren't. Still decent though. Perfectly crispy with good meaty filling. Could have been thicker. The dipping sauce didn't taste particularly fishy though, too bad. Sloppy Bun: Not your typical Vietnamese sandwich. Ground beef covered in a thick coconut curry sauce. Kinda reminded me of that Cambodian ground pork dip, Prahok Ktiss. Very rich. Felt like a less protein than other sandwiches though. Combo: Much higher quality pate and "fancy ham" than typical cheap Vietnamese combo sandwiches. It didn't have that low quality processed meat taste I can only describe as funky. Tons of grilled lemongrass kurobuta pork flooded the sandwich. Only a slice or two of thin mortadella; would have liked to see more. Strawberry Lychee Agua Fresca: Super sweet and refreshing. Super tasty sandwiches! We stopped here after touring the museum of ice cream. Great selection of sandwhiches. The steak sandwich was loaded with tender juicy steak. The meat melts in your mouth. Bread was fresh and nice crunch. Veggies also fresh and crispy. We also had a beer of happy hour from tap and fresh squeezed lemonade. Cant go wrong with a sammy and a crisp beer! Don't know why I never came here to try their banh mi as much as I love Vietnamese sandwiches. Perhaps looks too Americanized and would not taste authentic or delicious. Nevertheless, this is on my way back to my office from the gym and I decided to try it out. To my surprise, I was quite happy with their combo sandwich. It is a good size with bbq pork, Vietnamese pate, pickled carrot and jalapeno. The baguette was toasted perfectly and their gave you a good amount of protein. Original store is on Fillmore but never seem to be down there looking for lunch, but with my new office downtown I've been looking for reasonable places to get a sandwich. I saw the chairs out on Market St and as soon as I saw it was Bun Mee I knew I found a new "go-to" place for lunch! Although I was taking out, there was plenty of open counter seating available. The line was about 12 people deep, but before I could check in on Yelp, take a couple photos, and look over the menu, i was ordering the lemongrass pork sandwich and sweet potato fries. I stood on the side and took a few more photos and as fast as you could say "Sriracha" or "big mac" my order was ready. They threw in my vietnamese mayo and they had to-go packets of Sriracha! The general manager Austin, not Powers was on the scene over looking the daily operations and was super friendly with the customers. The bottom line is the food here is clean cut and fresh For a fair price. One sandwich and your done, the salads look incredibly large.
