My friend and I visited Forchtenstein Castle when exploring Burgenland for a day or so earlier this month. Unfortunately, most of the castle is only accessibly by guided tour (and they only offered a tour in English at 1pm on the day we were going to visit). We couldn't make it for the tour, so we weren't able to visit most of the castle. The portion of the castle we could visit was a bit of a museum about the Esterházy family and the castle, which was interesting, but I wish we could have visited the spaces only available by guided tour. Still, the castle is beautiful (and very different looking from the other castles we visited on our trip, because this part of Austria used to be a part of Hungary) and had incredible views of the valley. There was a wedding happening when we visited, and I can see why the couple wanted to be married at Forchtenstein Castle - it was really beautiful. (They also have a restaurant at the castle that you can visit if you're hungry or thirsty!) Overall, it was a wonderful stop during our time in Burgenland but take the guided tour if you can! read more
