We arrived just after dusk and the golden hour cast impossible shadows on every wall, tombstone,…read moreflora, and façade of one of the most awe inspiring corners of the earth that was, in many cases, carved out of the mountainside by people so long ago it almost seemed impossible that their efforts would still capture the eyes and mind of a people they couldn't possibly comprehend, gaping at the marrying of the natural environment and the curated rock, capturing life itself in a glowing rectangle that would have made Hank Morgan's lightning box seem pointlessly simple. If you are into cemeteries, like I am, then this is your place. It is such a unique place - very…read morecompact space with lots of amazingly ornate wrought iron gravesites and tons of flowers. Also has neat arched buildings and catacombs that you can tour for a small fee. Was well worth a walk through.

I explored this cemetery whilst visiting Munich from Los Angeles. It was quiet, well-kept, and…read moresmelled pleasantly of rich, wet earth...not unexpected of a cemetery...but what surprised me is that Munichans treat the area as a park. I encountered many joggers, mums with prams, people relaxing reading the paper or taking a work break in businesswear on a bench. There were even people lying in the grass reading books between graves, and someone was having a picnic near a tombstone. The statuary art is lovely and haunting. Adjacent to the cemetery, there's giant chess sets and a playground. I've explored and photographed cemeteries all over the world, and Alter Nordfriedhof is one of the most serene I've visited, despite the bustle.

This is where Mozart's widow Constanze, Mozart's father Leopold and Nannerl's daughter's forever residence. Go visit the cemetery in a gloomy winter day, and feel the somberness of the crying angels. Many beautiful iron crosses standing above a blanket of greenness with hundred years old trees looking over, like God looking over Its people. Death is beautifully peaceful here. One of my favorite places in Salzburg.
