Like so many before me, I managed to drop my iPhone several times before the screen ultimately smashed. It was of course, only a matter of time before this was inevitably going to happen... but did I think to take out insurance to protect myself in this eventuality? Well, yes I did... But whether I got round to actually doing it is an entirely different matter! So, with the exorbitant cost of getting Apple to fix it for me, I began a quest that lasted well over a month to find a indie mobile phone shop like Sim Tech World that would do it cheaper. It ultimately cost a staggering £80.00 to get the screen replaced, but I had, in the meantime, damaged the LCD screen, making the job more expensive, (well, it was actually my neighbours cat jumping directly onto the broken screen in an attempt to catch a moth that put paid to the LCD screen in reality...) I didn't end up using Sim Tech World, but it certainly made me aware of their existence. They are seemingly a tight little business, that specialises in mobiles and home computing, including PC and Apple laptops, games consoles etc, as well as digital cameras; essentially all of your portable electronics that you can bring into the shop for attention, (thy don't do home visits). They also call themselves an 'entertainment exchange', which, as the name suggests, means that they sell second user kit as well.

For my latest escapade, I needed photo canvasses. I have never ordered a photo canvas before and had to order on the Friday for deliver on the Monday. A quick search online revealed Orbit Print (based in Wales) who could print and deliver said canvasses within 2 working days... Worth a shot, I thought. So, I popped on to their website and made my selections. First things first, the pricing is easy to understand and very reasonable. I required four canvasses for our gallery (two larger ones and two smaller ones at A4 dimensions). I clicked on the options I wanted and paid... I quickly received an email afterwards asking me to send in my photos for printing. The largest image and one of the smaller images I had as Jpeg files, so these were no problem. One of the images I had a link to a high res version on googledrive - so provided this link.. This wasn't a problem at all for them. There was a bit of an issue (totally my fault), as I realised one of the images was, in fact, square and NOT rectangle as I had originally thought. I got an email from one of the team (shout out to Geraint here) straight away informing me that the image would be cropped. Not wanting the image cropped, I popped back on the website to see how much a square canvas would be. Turns out it's slightly more expensive, so I offered to pay the difference. Geraint informed me the order would be updated and no additional cost would be incurred - Amazing! The prints were ordered at 2pm on the Friday and (despite requesting delivery Monday) actually turned up on the Saturday! This wasn't an issue at all as they were redelivered on Monday when I was in. The quality was truly fantastic. All the prints were to be auctioned for charity, so I wanted them to be crisp and beautiful - something with Orbit delivered. And sometimes, because you stopped drinking coffee and your brain doesn't quite motor the way it should, you then think: This is art. I must buy this and hang it in my house a week before my mother arrives to see if the move overseas has caused her 30 year old daughter to grow up. Because this is a great idea brain, and I respect your whimsicality. And then, if you too have followed the timeline above, you would find yourself looking up custom canvas art prints on the internet. And that would be your Tuesday afternoon. Good job adult. But the internet land of custom canvases is a scary place. From amazon touting their cheapo £5.99 canvases to fine art sites making you question whether Catzilla is worth a £50 canvas - it's wild and crazy world out there. Until you snap out of your non-caffeinated daze and remember you work for a magical place that makes decisions for you. And you Yelp it. You Yelp it good. And sometimes, Birmingham's own Vicky O steers you in the right direction (as she has many times before) and you find yourself at the Orbit Print website, where the prices fall on the lower end - but not so low that it makes you nervous. Then you upload your fat cat masterpiece in a few easy steps, place the order for super reasonable shipping, hear back from customer service within an hour that everything is good to go and voila - a few days later, it arrives. You unwrap the parcel hesitantly... because good reviews or not, this was a photo from the internet and pretty cheap... so it could look like garbage. But no, today is not the day that you throw your hands up in the air and mentally beat yourself up over another "frivolous internet purchase" that proved to be subpar. The canvas is good quality, the photo looks great, there is no pesky pixelation and it arrived in time for your mother to see how whimsical her daughter has grown up to be. So then you hang Catzilla in your kitchen. And while you're making bedtime tea one Sunday night, you look up, giggle and remember that the service ninjas at Orbit deserve one heck of a Yelp story. And so, with tea in hand, beneath the glow of the kitchen light and the protective eyes of Catzilla, you pen said review, so other adventurers of Yelpland may also have the experience of turning fat cats into art. Pun a side, PC Of Mind are a small business with two stores, one in Pencoed and the other here in Llantwit Major which is the one I used. Offering a friendly personal service, they sorted old Bertha when she got the blue screen of death after the rain somehow seeped into my specially designed laptop bag (a carrier bag in my rucksack). They charged me £40, I don't know if that's cheap or not as I've only had to use one of these places once (God bless the sturdy Dell) but apparently they had to do a lot of work and it got me my Bertha back for at least another eighteen months. PC Of Mind operates a helpline, but it seems the ethos of the company is to offer a face-to-face approach wherever possible, which is handy is you're a noob.

I nipped down the road and was greeted by a friendly man on his own in the shop, he cut a spare for my door key in a matter of minutes and sent me on my way a few quid lighter. I could have gone to a Timpson's in Morrissons but when there are wonderful local businesses to support it makes no sense to go to a slightly soulless chain. They also offer and engraving service.

They provided all the boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, paper and special hanging boxes for clothes with the offer of more of anything if we required it. John suggested coming on the Saturday before our Monday move date, to load our boxes and garden furniture onto the van. This worked so well and meant we had ample space to continue our packing in readiness for the move. John even packed a load of items that I hadn't got round to doing, at no extra cost. On the day of the move John and his team arrived nice and early and set up without bothering us. His team were so professional, polite and looked the part in their smart blue uniforms. My daughter had been poorly the night of our move and they were sensitive to her needs and left furniture she was using until the end. I cheekily asked John to collect a large item of furniture from a local address and again this was done at no extra cost. Nothing was ever too much trouble. The boys even assisted a rival removal company in moving furniture out in order to move us in more quickly. They made what could've been a highly stressful day to a rather enjoyable one as we were out of our house with hours to spare and in our new house ready for tea. When going upstairs to build our beds, we found they had assembled all of them perfectly so my 3 children were in bed and had a perfect nights sleep and we could celebrate downstairs in our new home with a glass of wine!
