This location is a little out of the way ..... but back in the 1800s that's where everyone lived a little bit out of the way. Stunning piece of land with a backdrop of the mountains and the woods. This must have been idyllic growing up here as a child. Just off Highway 89, you'll find this historic site. It's not large, nor does it have a lot of information beyond what you'll see on a few plaques, but it's worth a stop since it's so easily accessible. There is the log cabin home that Butch Cassidy was raised in before he began his life of crime. I can imagine him as a young child climbing in the trees or running around playing hide and seek. Across from that, there's another small building-perhaps a shed or horse stable. The parking lot is spacious and it's easily accessible right off the highway. There's also a bathroom, although both the men's and the women's was out of toilet paper. Maybe it's not stocked often, so come prepared if you need to stop. read more

I'm a total history nerd and will literally go out of my way to see something like this. Just knowing where someone came from or visualizing where things originate. The grounds are beautiful and well kept. You can walk inside the home, but are met with plexiglass to keep the inside area protected. There are a few picnic tables and vault toilets if needed. It is free so that's also a plus. read more

Worth a stop... I love stumbling into landmarks during our travels and we just happened to come across this small attraction by accident on our way to Capitol Reef National Park in Torrey UT. This historic place is found somewhere between Richfield and Panquitch on Highway 89. There is nothing really near it. It is out of nowhere so it could be easily missed. We're not sure if the site is open all year round but we were the only ones there when we stopped by. We must've spent about 20 minutes or so to take a peek inside the home, read the interpretive signs and immerse our thoughts in history. There are volumes of books written on one of the west's most famous outlaws - Butch Cassidy. Movies were made as well as documentaries. Was he a criminal or a folk hero... This modest landmark is being restored by a number of groups including the Piute County and Utah State Parks. Check out the displays of farming equipment from that era, the information signs were well done to document the history, even includes newspaper clippings. The door to the home was open but the display inside is separated by plexiglass so you can only go so far. There is a surveillance camera in the premises. Worth a stop to stretch your legs and read a little bit of history. If you are a history buff this is a plus! Drive in to a gravel parking lot. This is a super quick stop (can be managed in less than five minutes) and you barely have to get off the highway. There's not much to read (although the sign in the front does say that they plan on adding more signs with additional info). I literally managed to see the house while cars were waiting for the pilot car to return (there was a construction stop right there). Pretty stoked about that efficiency. Is it worth it? Your call. It's free and doesn't require any driving. You get to catch a glimpse of the cabin where Butch Cassidy grew up. It doesn't look much different than any other historical cabin but hey, it's Butch Cassidy! read more

Off the highway, a well-preserved place of interest. Interesting bit of history and a pit-stop for those with a leisurely itinerary. Worth the unplanned diversion if you have time at hand. read more
