BEWARE of local "Handyman" Ryan J Butler. He services the Greater Burlington area. I heard about Ryan Butler through a large Real Estate Agency that I bought my house from. A week and a half ago I reached out to him about putting up a fence in my backyard. He didn't show up twice to two scheduled appointments we had to give me an estimate. I should of probably looked else where at that point but I gave him another shot. He finally showed up and estimated materials at $1000 and labor around $750. He asked for the material money up front, I was nervous writing a check for that amount of money to someone cause I had always seen on TV the scams, etc. I figured there was no way in such a small town that someone could do that but just in case I wrote specifically what it was for on the check... "materials prework". I agreed to give Ryan the work because I needed the fence in immediately and he told me he could get started this week, I have all the messages and the voicemail. He told me he would come Friday, never showed up. He didn't tell me until I reached out to him, and he assured me he would be there Monday. On Monday I realized he didn't come so I messaged and called him in the morning, no response so I messaged and called him in the afternoon again. Finally he responded and told me the day before he had his appendix removed and was out of commission for at least 7-10 days until he got doctors approval to go back to work. To me, I felt insecure and betrayed because he had my money and I felt for him but at the same time I needed the fence done sooner than that. I asked for my money back and that I would look around for someone to do it sooner and if I couldn't find someone I would give him the job when he recovered. I had no idea how long recovery was and when I looked it up online it said 6 weeks. Ryan stopped replying to me, and that is when I started to get extremely nervous that he had my money. I reached out to the owner of the large real estate company to find out if she had any suggestions. She let me know they had stopped using him because he wasn't showing up to jobs, she also informed me that his excuse with her 6 weeks ago was that he had appendix removed. I continued to message Ryan feeling betrayed and taken advantage of, he didn't respond for almost an entire day. I finally got him to say that he would give my money back "but not in the time I would want". I asked him what that meant and he stopped replying. He had claimed he ordered the materials already, I asked him to just have the materials brought to my house, or let me know who he ordered them from. No response, I truly believe he never had any intention of ordering the materials, or doing the job. He is a scam artist. I reached out to his wife because I was told she was a sweetheart and she might be able to help get my money back, he told her my money was a deposit and since I canceled the job he was keeping it. I then sent her my messages with her husband and the copy of the check that I specifically wrote for materials. She said "oh my god I'm so sorry", and explained they have separate accounts so she couldn't just write me a check. Ryan then had her block me. I'm at a dead end and I feel terrible, I'm a hard working young adult. I don't want this to happen to anyone else, I don't want anyone else to feel the way this situation makes me feel. watch out! my sister gave ryan butler $1,000 to purchase supplies for a project he was supposed to do for her. he cashed the check, never bought any materials and never did any of the work. i would hate for this to happen to anyone else! vermonters are people who keep their word and do things on a handshake too bad dirt bags like ryan butler are ruining this. read more
