A classic American diner experience and perfect for a family breakfast. Booths and tables were well lit. The space was clean and welcoming. We came in on a Sunday morning, and it was busy but the staff was friendly and helpful. We enjoyed a light fluffy veggie omelet with roasted potatoes. A little hot sauce splash and a smidge of added salt made them even more tasty. The Chilaquiles were made with crispy corn tortilla chips layered with red chili sauce and sprinkled with cheddar, cheddar Jack and feta cheeses. This was topped off with two over-easy eggs. The fried chicken's batter was crispy and crunchy and the waffles held up nicely to a swirl of maple syrup. We enjoyed a latte which was excellent as well as a drip coffee that was made with some nicely roasted beans. My only warning is that the portions are plentiful! I wish we could've taken a doggie bag, but we had a long road trip ahead. This is an excellent choice for a classic All American food experience. read more

Host was a very sweet and cheerful gentleman! I didn't catch his name. Debbie, our server was great and made sure my nachos were exactly the way I requested them! It was 3/14/26 (pi day 3.14) so each slice of pie was only $3.14! What an awesome deal!! We ordered peanut butter pie, key lime, chocolate, and banana cream. Also got a few of the pies a'la mode for an extra dollar. He said the ice cream was freezer burned. Mine tasted fine. I'm so glad we stopped in at the ButtercuP on our way home. The food and service were great! There used to be a ButtercuP pantry in the Pleasanton area, but they closed. I haven't been to one since. I was so happy to see this one in the area while we were passing through. The soup of the day, which was baked potato, was the star of the show! It's been a while since I last visited ButtercuP. I met a group of friends here for dinner on 12/08/2025. It was pretty quiet when we walked in at around 7pm. We were quickly greeted by the staff, and were immediately seated. The interior had gone through some renovation work. It was much brighter than it used to be. Our server got us started with some drinks. Their menu appeared to have been updated. My original plan was to get the prime rib dip, but I was so tired that I apparently ordered the prime rib dinner instead. Two of my friends got the Mom's Meatloaf, while the third got the BBQ Chicken Tortilla Salad. All entrees came with either soup or salad. Our food arrived in about 10 minutes. The prime rib was quiet good. It was moist and tender. The curly fries (I thought I ordered the sandwich) were good as well. Service we received was very good. The staff were attentive and friendly. With tax and tip, the total was about $134. For what we ordered, it was reasonable. This place has been a Walnut Creek staple for a long time. Good spot to visit if you crave American fare. 4 stars. read more

Never go to a restaurant when there is a World Cup game on. No food left the kitchen until half time. 30 mins to get served in a diner is unacceptable. The service was slow, no check ins, no coffee refills. Several surrounding tables had to get up and find workers for checks, etc. Pancakes i ordered tasted like onions and sausage. There were even bits of potato and sausage gristle mixed in. The side of potatoes was hard and cold. Overall, very disappointing. Do better. read more

It all began in 1988 by a young couple who were looking for an eatery that offered fresh food for them and their young children. They dreamed of owning a family-style restaurant where families can enjoy a casual setting that offers good food at a reasonable price - hence the birth of Buttercup was born. Now, many years later they have five locations under their belt. Even though this is a medium to large size eatery, it's service and detail to attention can be considered a mom-and-pop joint. They recently revamped their eatery in Walnut Creek, and we all agreed that they did a fabulous job. The revamped eatery looked clean and welcoming. Their generous platter of food and the friendly servers made this a place for locals to hang out and enjoy good quality food at reasonable prices. Many of their staff has been with them for years - so they must care not only for what they bring in, but also treat their employees well. Speaking of employees, we've had a memorable service by our server, Miguel - but, this morning he was a little off-his-beat. Everyone is expected to have some bad days, so we didn't judge him by this morning's performance. He's still one of the better servers. My family has been patronizing Buttercup Diner for decades. This cafe is a simple, unpretentious place ( now vibrantly remodeled ) with delicious comfort food. What they do, they do extremely well. We love their breakfasts and their lunches, always tasty and filling. If you have visited Buttercup long enough, you will notice several staff members have been there for many (20-30?) years. I am always pleased when we are seated at a table served by Joanne F. She is not only efficient, but she is snappy, energetic, and fun. Other staff members are always pleasant too, and acknowledge us when we arrive. This is one of Walnut Creek's little gems! read more

My first time visiting any of the. Buttercup cafés. A friend of mine suggested we meet there in the morning before going off and taking care of some business. For 7:30 AM on a weekday it was pretty quiet. The menu was quite extensive. I was a bit surprised to be presented with an early morning cocktail menu. That would've been probably pretty good but for the need to go to work immediately afterwards. I ordered the biscuits and sausage gravy. My friend ordered the huevos rancheros. The service was quick and the portions were quite sizable. (in fact, we boxed up what we didn't eat for breakfast and we sat down together and had the leftovers for lunch.) Whenever I go to a different café, I typically order one of two things either eggs Benedict or biscuits and gravy. It's really hard to find a super biscuit and gravy, but no matter how bad they are, you can always doctor it up with enough Tabasco sauce. Unfortunately, the biscuits and gravy at buttercup met my old friend Mr. Tabasco! My friend's huevos rancheros was good comfort food, but not enough to gush about it. Buttercup diner is definitely a cut above IHOP or Denny's. So if you're in the area looking for a quick and reasonable breakfast this may be a good stop to consider. read more

Just eehh. Breakfast was ok. Food seemed as if it had been precooked and just sitting around waiting to be plated. Pancakes were mildly warm to room temp. Eggs were dry. We've tried it more than once with the same outcome. Remodel is nice, seems brighter and cleaner. We prefer lunch over breakfast. Great club sandwich and fries. Hefty side salad portions as well. Went to ButtercuP with my family, I'm not big on diners, but my cousins found this place close by. It's what you would expect from any dinner, no frills, no fuss. The hostesses were very welcoming. The food was okay. I had the omelette, which was just okay, I didn't finish it, I personally felt it had too much cheese. My cousins enjoyed their breakfast, they had steak and eggs with potatoes. Jo, our server, was absolutely amazing, she made our dining experience so lovely and memorable. What an absolute sweetheart, she was cheerful, and energetic but not too energetic as we were recovering from a birthday party and me from a migraine. The restaurant is very clean and welcoming. Lots of parking and easy access to the restaurant. This is a great place if you're in the area and passing through for a quick pick me up, but be careful, you'd find yourself staying longer because of the great staff. She didn't reply, and left. I thought she went to get a towel, but no, she comes after 20 min, and is waiting and says " are you ready to order" really rude. I love ButtercuP and so glad they have multiple locations. Went for a hike at Mt. Diablo and this Walnut Creek location was only 15 mins away. Our server Jo was amazing, super nice and attentive! I got the egg white scramble, had to add a biscuit with honey butter and then got the French toast to share with my sister. Everything came out SUPER quick which was great since I was starving. Everything was piping hot and full of flavor. The French toast was amazing, super fluffy and airy and the egg white scramble evened out the guilt. Their biscuits are fresh made and mine was still nice and warm when I got it. The honey butter just add to the deliciousness. I'm so glad the service and food is consistent throughout the locations. This is my first time at ButtercuP and I can't believe that I've never tried this place! It has nice clean table and booth seating, and a counter for purchasing their pies. Gave me a feel of somewhere between Denny's and Marie Callendar. Upon getting seated by the host, our friendly waitress greeted us and proceeded to bring us water and take our orders. (It was about 8:15pm so we're really hungry!) Between the 4 of us, we ordered 2 prime ribs (excellent!), T-bone steak (also excellent), and a salmon dish. All dishes are SO GOOD and exceeded my expectations, especially for the price... it's an excellent value. Honestly, where can you find $26.99 for a healthy cut of Prime Rib these days!?! In particular, our waitress was very nice and friendly. She came back and checked on us often to make sure we're doing ok, yet not being over bearing. It was a very good meal. Uggh. The menu looks sooo good but the food was spectacularly awful. I was excited about the Calf's Liver plate since it's hard to find in restaurants and it's a signature dish for them. The meat was cooked ok but the "sautéed onions" on top were thickly cut white onions that were raw and didn't do anything to flavor the meat. It had no other flavors. The "garlic" mashed potatoes had no garlic and nothing else. The veggies on the side were raw with zero flavor and the tortellini soup served with the plate was cold and flavorless. My kid ate some of the bacon on her Mac-n-Cheese but only had one bite of the Mac-n-Cheese and refused to eat anymore because it was too dry and flavorless. We took the leftover home for her but she doesn't want any. This is a child who loves Mac n-Cheese. My husband's fried chicken sandwich was ok but Wendy's makes it better. Their "famous" Upside Down Apple Walnut Pie was slightly burned, too sweet, and had a total of 2 walnuts in it. It was so bad that we couldn't finish one slice between the three of us. I want to like this place. Heard great things. But from the moment we walked in things didn't go so well. The hostess was absolutely rude and dismissive. Our food came quickly and was perfectly fine. Basic breakfast. My issue is more with the personnel. Couldn't find one person to get water delivered to the table. And the staff seemed put out when I asked for it. It's water, not a crazy request. I did like the decor. Clean and somewhat retro I'll give it another chance on the off chance staff was having a bad day. But if my experience is the same, I won't return. Even though we were on a 15 minute wait list, we were directed to our table within a time frame of 10 minutes. Jasmine was awesome. She welcomed and treated us as if we were a long lost relatives. There was no doubt that customer service was one of the main goals of this eatery. It did not take us long to determine the other goal. The selections from the menu, all pictured, were all crafted with great care. The only loss of star came from the mistimed preparation of the eggs. It met our table far after the other meals. Funny I've passed this unassuming place for years and never realized it was here. Had some court business nearby and saw this and snuck my head in. Nice find. It's kinda Black Bear Diner ish if you need somthing to compare it to. Greasy spoon, known by many as a breakfast spot. Menu had good stuff on it, but on this day, I had a craving for some hash and eggs. $17 though, prices are getting stupid these days. The plate came. The corned beef hash looked like the canned type, which I dont hate. As long as it was crispy. Which this one was for sure. Has browns were crispy too, and the eggs were nice and runny to spread the juice all over. Good stuff. Oh it came with a random blueberry muffin. I appreciate it was warmed up, but it was just okay. Again, expect diner food, but not diner prices. My motto is, even though its pricey, if the food and service is decent, I dont mind it as much. I'll be back at my next paycheck. read more

Bisquick biscuits are very good but the Buttercup ones were very disappointing. I ordered a cream pie to go and tried it when I got home. The "whipped cream" was horrible! It tasted and smelled a little like it had some kind of petroleum product in it. I always like whipped cream but this was an odd, inedible white spread that smelled unhealthy, way more unhealthy than real whipped crea. I scraped it off and threw it away. read more

Cute local diner! I love old school diners and I've been wanting to check out Buttercup ever since I moved to Walnut Creek. I finally had the chance to come in for breakfast with my mom last month. I got the Chicken Fried Steak & Eggs with a side of their grits and my mom got a stack of pancakes. The food was great, and we were happy with our visit. It looks like they have a dinner menu too, so we'll have to come back to check that out soon! I'd love to try out their pork chops and one of their pies next time. read more

The only reason I wouldn't give this restaurant 5 stars is because I thought the ambiance was a bit boring. My wife and I stopped by for an early afternoon midweek lunch. There was a decent amount of people, many of whom seemed to be regulars, a good sign. We were seated immediately and it took us a while to peruse a menu that doesn't lack for choices! My wife settled on the Veggie Benedict and O'Brien Potatoes; I ordered the Monterey Chicken Sandwich with fries. Our lunch was excellent. My wife enjoyed the Veggie Benedict, and was especially taken with the potatoes, loving the seasoning. My chicken sandwich was delicious, a quality chicken breast and the fries were perfect. We couldn't leave without trying their well known desserts. Good thing, it's definitely smart to leave room for dessert here! My wife loved the Bread Pudding, while I savored a big slice of the Peanut Butter Pie with chocolate sauce - yum! We'll have to try the milkshakes next time. We had an attentive, friendly server; for example, she initiated a refill of my Coke without me asking. And they have Scan To Pay for convenience and security. I love this restaurant. I ate at the Buttercup in Oakland for about 30 years. After moving to Walnut Creek, I was so happy to see one here, and finally got there this week. It was every bit as good as the Oakland establishment, good food, good service, huge portions. What more can a person ask for? The only thing I would give a negative rating to is their coffee. Of course, coffee is a very personal thing, but I did not think the coffee was good. Considering how good the food and deserts are though, I'll let the coffee go. Also love that they serve breakfast all day as I am not a morning person and most places stop serving breakfast too early for me to get it, and since breakfast is my favorite meal to eat out, and Buttercup's breakfasts are fantastic, Buttercup works for me. We have been coming here for years. We noticed that since the remodel the restaurant is always much too hot with no air circulating. I don't know if this is a temporary thing but I can't enjoy my meal in a hot place when it's also hot outside, I left feeling sick. It's obvious there are a lot fewer customers, understandably. I feel sorry for the workers, it must be miserable working there now. Hope this gets fixed soon read more
