The Krohn's Conservatory Butterfly Show today didn't disappoint!! I expected to see a few butterflies around, maybe in the bushes. But I didn't expect to be immersed in the midst of so many varieties of butterflies: feeding together on oranges, fluttering by me, perched on the floor, clustered on leaves of plants, perching on my own clothes (interestingly, I felt them land and knew the moment they left). I was ushered in to this protected enclosed space with a group for a 45-minute experience, with a few instructions: don't touch the butterflies, except with the provided paper perch, don't bring any drinks in besides bottled water, etc., all provided to keep the butterflies safe. Also unexpected was how friendly an experience it was. Yes, the best way to meet everyone was to have a butterfly perched on your back, so that each person walked up to tell you that. But as we all experienced this together, we laughed and enjoyed the experience together!! read more

The butterfly show is a seasonal add-on to the existing experience at the conservatory. It costs a fair amount of money for a short visit. The time in the butterfly room itself is limited, and one does the majority of the conservatory first, sees the butterflies, and then gets a few more rooms of exhibits. The butterflies, to the extent that one can attribute emotional states to a group of insects, seemed to be just as disgusted with tourists as anyone else would be. They tended to cluster around the edge of the room (where you couldn't really reach them through the foliage displays), and despite the scented cards we were given to attract them, it was a bit of a challenge. But I was able to get a good view of several of them. The species they have chosen are quite splendid looking. An entomologist sits in the center to take questions. Tickets sell out in advance, so if you find the idea of butterfly wrangling appealing, I wouldn't wait until the last minute. read more

The cost is 7 but you can get a coupon for 1 dollar off online. The butterflies this year are from the Philippines. It's a smaller area that that off the Columbus botanical garden but it was full of butterflies and they were very active. I like that they give cards to gather the butterflies without damaging them .. It aggravates me how may people and children hurt the butterflies but catching them. This area is beautifully landscaped. It was an enjoyable visit ..saw lots of butterflies. read more

This is a really neat event to attend in Cincinnati. The Krohn Conservatory is such a gem and relies a lot on the public to keep them going. Every year there is the awesome butterfly show where you get to interact and hopefully get some butterflies to land on you. I have gone several years, but this year I was somewhat saddened as there was only one volunteer in the butterfly room, and he could not be everywhere, so there seemed to be a lot of people with no manners or respect for the creatures. If it had not been for that, my experience would have been awesome. Admission to the show includes the whole conservatory, which is a quite escape from the city. A must do whether you are an adult or child. Hopefully in the future they will get more volunteers to control the crowd. read more

This is an event at the Conservatory that our family looks forward to every spring. There is usually a coupon that can be found for a dollar or two off an admission. Adults are $7 and children 4 and under are free. Weekends are usually super crowded, so I would head down early. We went on a Thursday and there was a crowd but no wait. We had the whole family in tow plus a little extra bit for fun! Our teenager still loves the show as much as she did when she was a small child. The younger two did really well. They weren't afraid of the butterflies as they flew throughout the room. Don't forget to check out the other rooms at the Conservatory after you are finished in the butterfly room. read more

The annual Butterfly Show at Krohn Conservatory is a wonderful event. The exhibit goes beyond just displaying the butterflies amongst the flowers, although that is a beautiful and fun sight to see. It is a themed event around which multiple displays, decorations, and activities are structured. This year's theme was Pura Vida: The Butterflies of Costa Rica. Features begin even where the line forms, providing some entertainment while waiting for entry. There is an upcycled garden on the way into the conservatory, and the entry is set up in the desert section, which contains some art and sculptures related to the theme. As you head through the Orchid room, there is a display on the young butterflies still drying their wings. A variety of activities, like coloring sheets, photo opportunities and information about Costa Rican animals are available in the final waiting area. The butterflies are loose in a smaller space in a specially themed garden. Visitors are provided "butterfly landing pads," which allow folks to interact safely with the butterflies. There is no limit on how long you can spend in the room, so it can get crowded and hot. Hundreds of butterflies from the region fly about, and will often land on visitors. The other two spaces, the Palm and the Tropical rooms, also have features associated with the event. Special butterfly signs indicate regional flowers, and some small animals, like birds and fish, are on display in a "Living Greenhouse" exhibit. Neat show! I have been looking forward to the butterfly show all season, but one thing or another had come up and it was delayed again and again. Thankfully they extended the season for a few weeks and I was able to go there today with Brandon. Wear loose clothing its really hot (101 degrees) and humid. I was able to stand the temperature for about 30 minutes on the rush of adrenalin I got from being surrounded by so much beauty. They do provide a convenient air conditioned room right out side the butterfly area, which is also nice to go into after looking at the rest of the tropical foliage. It was wonderful to have butterflies landing on me and taking pictures of them was fantastic too! Some of them flutter around so much its hard to capture them, but with patience and slow moving hands/body you can get some really amazing shots. Sometimes the greenhouse windows would get in the way, but its not so bad, you still have a beautiful butterfly picture to save. There were kids there and I helped them hold a butterfly which landed on my pants on a stiff blue piece of paper they give as you enter the butterfly area. They were so excited, I was so excited, it was really great to be there! read more

Krohn Conservatory is awesome no matter what... but add a whole wing of gorgeous, bright, beautiful, friendly butterflies and it makes it downright spectacular! The show is $6 for adults, but you can find $1 off coupons all over Cincy. You'll start out at the big white tent outside, just an FYI. I definitely recommend checking their website for specials going on, as most of them go on at the beginning of the show in May. I wish they would make or redo some of these later on as well for those that can't make it out until June. It can get crazy busy on the weekends, with tons of kids around. It is really neat for kids and adults alike. When it's not busy, they give you a scented foam flower to get the butterflies to land on. Although most of these have no problem landing on your shirt, hat, or hair. They won't hurt you though so no worries. The later you go, the hotter it will be. Dress accordingly. They will cram as many people as allowed into that room on weekends, which does kind of detract from the experience, so if you an go during the week, I recommend it. The later you go, the less butterflies there are and unfortunately the more beat up they get. Please try not to handle them and pick them up if you can, so that everyone can enjoy them. I hate parents that let their kids pick at the poor things. The show is different every year, which makes it fun to go every year! They breed them throughout the season, and you can even see the room with a few cocoons of ones that haven't hatched yet, before you go into the main room. Bring a camera, stay cool, and just enjoy them. It's definitely worth the little bit of money that you normally get in free for. You can enjoy the rest of the conservatory as well after you're done! And there are a few artisans with a butterfly theme that sell some neat stuff. Check it out! read more

What an amazing experience. Never been to a place where you see butterflies flying all around you. This years theme is: Butterflies of the Philippines. To get a butterfly, slowly swoop them up with the paper that will be provided for you. 3. It's hard to catch them when they are feeding. Find ones that are just resting on a flower/plant 4. $7.00 for an adult enters you into a world of butterfly fancy. This year came with a theme: Butterflies of Morocco, though, by all accounts, the butterflies were not uniquely Moroccan. In fact, only a third were from Africa. So I guess Butterflies in Morocco would have been a stronger moniker. Though the theme-ing left a bit to be desired as well. Additionally, Krohn seems to have gone to a stripper mentality with the butterflies this year. They can touch you, but you can't touch them. Gone are the days of being handed a card to catch butterflies on. You are told multiple times that you cannot touch the butterflies before entering the butterfly room. That said, you cannot avoid having multiple butterflies land on you at some point during your visit. A word for the wise: the greenhouse is hot and you will have to put up with kids. The attraction also gets kind of busy, particularly on Saturdays. Opens at 10:00 AM, so get there early! read more

This was such a cool experience. We have visited the Krohn Conservatory before, but this was our first butterfly show experience -- it was amazing! To get to see butterflies flocking together and flying through the air... so cool. And they really will land on you. It's incredible! The only downer was a) the amount of kids that had no problem running up to adults (strangers, mind you) to try to "steal" their butterflies, and b) kids in general TOUCHING the butterflies. Manhandling the poor, tiny things. The volunteers at the conservatory are very careful to tell you to LOOK, don't touch, but these kids didn't give a crap. Sad! read more

A bit of a late review, but a review anyways. My boyfriend and I went the Sunday on the weekend it opened. It was a rather long line, and besides the woman cutting in front of about 30 of us with her huge stroller [seriously, why bring something SO HUGE to an event where there are A LOT of people and cramped spaces? Stupid.], it wasn't too bad of a wait. We go to Conservatory a lot throughout the year, it's always just something to do when you can't think of anything else, and even though they charge now, it's still cheap. But we've never been to the Butterfly Show. It was def an experience. It took a while before we had any butterflies land on us, but when it happened we were both giggling like little kids. The butterflies were beautiful to just watch, the scenery of the room added to the beauty. I'm really glad we decided to check it out, and will more than likely go back before it ends. read more

If you have kids, you will want to take them to the Butterfly Exhibit! I just completed a volunteer shift there and was amazed at how much fun the kids were having even though it was a sticky, humid day. The butterflies will land on your hand, face, shoulder, etc. and this seems to amaze especially the little boys! The girls seem to remain calm and take it in stride, while the little guys scream for their parents to "Quick, take a picture!" Wear loose, cool clothing because it is steamy. There's plenty else to see, too, like the beautiful plants, art and waterfall area (where you can cool off). The staff tries to keep plenty of cups and water available, but on a day like today it's almost impossible to keep up with the demand. read more

It's always beautiful and always smells great here. I go annually with my family and this year was no exception. It used to be themed with Butterflies from different continents. There were supposed to be Monarchs this year but I saw more of other types which is not an issue. I thought they all were beautiful. My toddler was more interested and engaged this year as well. Pretty consistent with in years past. No new surprises. they did have a scratch-n-sniff card with a Jasmine aroma to attract the butterflies. My son was so stimulated we couldn't stand still due to him running around and what not. Imagine standing in a colorful room surrounded by beautiful butterflies randomly landing on your shoulder, your head, your cheek. The reason I gave this year's event only 3 stars is ....I feel there weren't near as many butterflies as there has been in at past events. And this show was called "butterflies of Madagascar" There could have been more info, more interactive booths, more staff. It was crowded, sure. But that is to be expected. Krohn Conservatory is the reason I still live here. Moving from Carolina to Ohio in late November I experienced a weather shock. It was dreadful here. I didn't know anyone, it was sub artic temperatures, piles of dirty snow everywhere, and the sky was grey all the time. Then I discovered Krohn. It was warm, it smelled green and alive and there was a waterfall. Best of all, It was free. I could go every day if I needed to . It was a life line, a warm living refuge away from the desolate grey of the city. Then I learned about the butterfly show and thought...wait, this place gets better?!?! I bought the Butterfly pin knowing I would go more than once and I definitely did. The experience of being surrounded by hundred of pretty things with wings was breath taking. I loved the year they did the Japanese butterflies but every year is amazing and special. If you have kids, you have to go. You just have to . The kids are hilarious to watch as their reactions vary from wonder to terror. But honestly, how can you be afraid of a butterfly? Some kids need to get thier life together... (Can you tell I'm not a parent?) This is also a great place to take a date. Sunday mornings are great for being less busy but you can also go to several events in the early evenings that are kid-free if you are opposed to the little rugrats. There really is something for everyone at Krohn. Go find your little peace of refuge there. I did. read more

The Krohn Butterfly Show is an annual Cincinnati activity I thoroughly enjoy. Having been to the Krohn on it's own, I was super impressed with the diversity of plants in size, shape, and origin. They have recently upped the ante, so to speak, by labeling them with some facts and tid-bits, but that really isn't about the butterfly show, is it? The logic for me follows, that if Krohn without an exhibit is great, it's even better with one. At least this one! The butterflies come once a year for about a month and the outside dons a lovely version of the specimen of interest. This year the butterfly is made of recycled CD's that appear like giant, awesome, sequins. Very cool. I will say the theme this year isn't coming to mind in a real, succinct fashion...something about recycling, global, the world? Anyhow...there's a theme. And a cool globe centerpiece inside. In the past it's been a country or region so easier to recall. There seems to be less decoration, in general, but that's not necessarily a bad thing- more room to move around, but fewer picture opportunities, maybe? Anyhow... When we walked into the show this Memorial Day weekend I was thrilled to see NO line (in the past we've waited quite a while) AND the Chill ice folks there. Downfall was we couldn't take out icy treat in with us as it wasn't resealable, but given the lack of line and wait, it was fine as we sat and had out treat before entering. There were crafts for kids to do in the entrance area as well, which seemed like a nice addition to the show. Coffee filter butterflies and cut and color options. It turned out it was a good thing we iced down before we entered because as the toasty 92 degrees outside was warm, the 94-96 temperature in the greenhouse (sans even a warm cross breeze) was even warmer. I recall perspiring every year (the butterflies like it, right?) but this year I was a bit of a sweaty mess. A happy, sweaty mess, but still. Be warned about warm days here.... Despite the temperature, there were plenty of great and unique butterflies to photograph, watch, and let rest on my finger. They really are cool insects. Inside there was improved signage about what to look for, and a paper flower given at the entrance to entice the 'flies to land for closer inspection. I think it might have been less appealing to them than the real life flowers, so not totally enticing, but it also might have kept grimey kid hands from touching wings. I call that a win. We had our annual good time at the show; it was all we expected and more. If you've never been or have been thinking about going, it's a great time and good for kids (leave your strollers at home, though, PLEASE!). Way to go Cincinnati Parks and Krohn! read more

This exhibit made me more sad than excited, and I'll tell you why. The volunteers clearly state before they let you into the "butterfly dome" NOT to man handle the poor little butterflies. All around me though, what do I see? Kids grabbing for the delicate creatures. That being said, I think it is a cool learning experience for the kids to see different butterfly species. But maybe next time, we can adopt the 'look but not touch' learning method. I don't think that's too much to ask. read more

What's more pleasant than butterflies? Well you'd probably say puppies or kittens and I'd agree, but butterflies are still pretty cool. I like to call them flutterbys, but that's just me. The Krohn Conservatory is so beautiful already, imagine adding in some winged insects! I've been to the butterfly show several times and always enjoyed myself. The fact that they run free among the place is really cool. As Cathy R. mentioned, they'll land on you and be your new friend for the time being! I've always wondered how they catch them all when the event is over. Hmmm. The conservatory is free for it's normal exhibits, but this one costs a little extra. You can also get coupons from most UDF's in town. There's also free wireless so you can hang with the butterflies while you do work! read more

Came here with my boyfriend on Saturday morning for his first ever butterfly show. The larvae of the butterflies were imported from Brazil and bred in the US. The show consisted of butterflies flying around a room and children/adults (my boyfriend included) trying to chase them for a picture or to lure them to land and stay on their hands. We witnessed beautiful butterflies eating and witnessed some being trampled on and some being picked up by their wings. It was a good show but I think the children need to be less gah gah for butterflies so they won't get hurt! read more

I try to take my daughter to this event every year and we always enjoy our outings here. My daughter loves attempting to catch butterflies on her sleeves, and it is pretty cool being surrounded by thousands of beautiful flying butterflies! My advice: go early in the season (we went in late May this year and it was hotter than the dickens in those greenhouses) and early in the morning on a weekday, it gets crowded! read more

We visited during the final week. It was an experience. There were butterflies everywhere. It was magical. They were out of the butterfly landing cards, and it was super crowded, again, probably because this is the last week of the show. I took off one star because I felt like I wished there had been more crowd control, or even, timed entry, because with the sweltering temperature of the room and the number of people it wasn't as enjoyable as it could have been. I think I would have been able to tolerate the heat longer and enjoy the exhibit more if there weren't so many people! That said, next year I'll be back (and maybe my son won't be soooo afraid of the butterflies), and I'll try to go earlier in the show. read more

I try to go at least once during the year to see the Butterfly show while it is at the Krohn as it is one of the best of their many different shows. There are always so many various kinds of butterflies to see at this show and the flowers that they have a very pretty too. It can get very hot in the show so dress accordingly and yes if you wear bright color clothing one may even land on you. Once you have purchased your ticket/entry, you can take your time getting to the exhibit (going past the cactus / dessert room, then through the orchid room and lastly bonsai room before seeing the butterflies). After you have entered the butterfly room, you can stay for as long as you like and then see the rest of the conservatory before leaving. Parking is free and there are overflow areas for busy days. I recommend going early first thing if you don't like crowds. They do offer a pin for those who want to go multiple visits during the show. read more
