"Born in Connecticut in 1742, a graduate of Yale College, Brownson studied medicine and practiced that profession in his home state, moving to St. John`s Parish (now Liberty County), Georgia in 1764. Active in the cause of liberty, Brownson became one of the leaders in the revolutionary cause. He was one of the delegates to the state convention that ratified the U.S. Constitution in Augusta on 31 December 1787. "Nathan Brownson died in Liberty County October 18, 1796, being best remembered as governor and as one of the founders of the University of Georgia." He was instrumental in obtaining the grant of land which led to the establishment of the University of Georgia. "Born in Wallingford, Connecticut, April 12, 1724, Dr. Hall moved to Saint John's Parish where he purchased the plantation now known as Hall's Knoll. He became a leading physician, planter, patriot, and was active in mercantile and shipping circles in Sunbury. Dr. Hall died in 1790 and was buried on his plantation at Shell Bluff Landing in Burke County. In 1848, his remains were re-interred in Augusta, beneath the granite obelisk, 'The Signers' Monument.'" Standing here today, with the churchyard still and the pines shifting in the wind, it takes only a moment to imagine how different the scene must have been when blue‑coated scouts, foragers, and artillery units moved through the same crossroads. The marker reads, "On Dec. 13, 1864, Murray's brigade of Kilpatrick's cavalry division (USA), scouting in the right rear of Gen. Sherman's army, which was then closing in on Savannah, moved south into Liberty County. After driving back the 29th Georgia Cavalry Battalion (CSA), Lt. Col. Arthur Hood, which was patrolling Liberty County, Murray advanced to Midway Church. The 5th Kentucky Cavalry was sent to Sunbury to open communications with the Union blockading squadron in St. Catherine's Sound. The 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry was sent to the Altahama River to burn the Savannah and Gulf (ACL) Railroad bridge at Doctor Town. Both missions failed.On the 14th, Kilpatrick arrived with Atkins' brigade and the 10th Wisconsin Battery. Establishing headquarters at Midway Church, he sent foraging parties east to Colonel's Island, south below Riceboro, and west beyond the railroad to strip the country of livestock and provisions. On the 15th, with loaded wagons and herds of horses, mules and cattle, he returned to Bryan County and went into camp at "Cross Roads" (Richmond Hill). "On the 17th, Mower's division, 17th Corps (USA), enroute to destroy the railroad from McIntosh to the Altamaha River, halted at Midway Church for the night. Next morning, Mower marched to McIntosh and began his destruction. Hazen`s division, 15th Corps, destroyed the railroad from Ogeechee to McIntosh." It reads... "Near this spot, Company F of the Third South Carolina Cavalry, Lieut. W.L. Mole commanding, was stationed during the summer of 1864. The Company was on Patrol duty, guarding the Coast of McIntosh County. On the night of August 18th, the post was attacked by Federal Troops coming up the South Newport River. Of Company F, less than 20 men escaped death or capture. Five civilian prisoners were taken also, and the Bridge over the South Newport River was burned." [Review 10933 overall, 705 of 2019.]

Built in 1892, The Old Liberty County Jail was constructed with all the "modern conveniences" and…read morereplaced a wooden structure. It was used until 1969 when Governor Lester Maddox had it condemned stating it was "a rotten and filthy rathole." While the architect is a mystery, the contractor was Mr. Parkhill. The red brick, Old Jail is an example of vernacular architecture with Victorian architecture elements and is typical of the late 19th century. The Old Jail is on the National Register of Historic Places. In October the Old Jail is transformed into a "Haunted Jail" by non profits for fundraising. A haunted tour is especially spooky as ghost hunters, searching for paranormal activity, have sited there's plenty here!
