We visited here 2 days ago with 3 children aged 2, 4, and 6 (and 4 adults). The kids were free for entry. There are several different ponds to choose from including a challenge pond which will give the kids an exciting chance to try and catch fish prior to moving over to the other ponds where they are guaranteed to catch a fish immediately! The grounds are clean and well manicured. Opportunities for shade and sitting down are scattered around the ponds. Plenty of rods, buckets and nets are available for use at no extra charge. The person helping us on the day was really nice and let the kids watch him gut the fish and explore the innards, while he identified the parts. The kids held the heart and massaged it to beat again. The lessons learned here were brilliant! Our kids (and us) had an absolute ball. We let them catch 1 fish each (rainbow trout). They were quite large and it only cost $48. Plus they gut and clean for free. If you look at this price for fish, you may view it as expensive, but you need to look at this as the time you spent there and the experience the kids had. This was a day they will never forget. Hot Tip: use a few pellets to burley the water in the challenge pond to make it exciting for the kids. The fish will jump and splash around the rod, but they probably wont catch anything in this pond. It helps extend your time there and add that extra bit of anticipation and excitement for the kids. read more

We drove up from Melbourne for the day, got there at midday and we got 2 rods and bait for our 2 kids. They caught a few plate sized trout each and a salmon. The ponds are labelled with different fish. The staff were super friendly and cleaned our fish for us and packed some in an esky with ice to take home, we cooked some of the trout there. Delicious! Beautiful area, yummy trout and friendly staff. Overall a great day out for the family. read more

History
Established in 1958.
Buxton Trout and Salmon Farm is Australia's first trout farm where trout have been reared for over 50 years. The farm was set up in the late 50's by Frank Parkes. There was no commercial farming of trout at that time and he was instrumental in having legislation changed and began the trout industry as we have it here today. In the early 60's a New Zealander, Trevor Baynin, took over the farm. Then in 1979 my step-father became the owner. I, with my wife Deb, have been here since 1988 and in the mid 90's we developed these 5 acres of parkland you see today. It's a lovely spot for people to visit, picnic and of course, catch fish.
