I watched the grinning faces of the adults and children while they enjoyed the following: - Cycle ferris wheel - Cycle swings - Cycle carousel - Spinning cycles Nothing looked appropriate for those of us who had been enjoying the beer portion of the Oktoberfest but it sure looked like everyone riding on the recycled contraptions was having a fabulous time...even some of the parents who had to pedal their hearts out in order to keep their children moving.

Even better that they will serve you canned PBR, cheap whiskey and bacon wrapped hot dogs and then allow you on thier carnival rides made from bicycle parts and junk. But wait, theres more!!! Remember the game Mousetrap? You know, the one where you lure a mouse to cheese and then trap it under a net, after a marble rolls around all of these crazy plastic pieces on the game board to set the trap off? Well picture that, but with a bowling ball instead of a marble, built once again with various junk. Now imagine it is so huge that the mouse is the size of a car...actually it IS a car, and the net is a metal safe that smashes the car. Yep, its pretty fucking cool. To end the evening there is a bicycle rodeo. Is there jousting? Yes! A bike/lawnmower combo? Sure, why not. Audience participation? At your own risk. Do you get covered in shaving cream and flour? Uh huh. Awesome? Most definitely!! Thanks Cyclecide for a super fun Sunday afternoon!

The Superhero Street Fair is no exception to this concept. I have never been to Burning Man but I have heard a ton about it from people who tell me it will change your life - it's like a religious experience. I finally got a taste of the kool aid and boy, it was something else. There were several DJ booths playing all sorts of different dance music, a party bus, giant inflatable "hamster" balls as my friend dubbed it, jousting and of course crazy costumes. Everything from Ganja Girl to a full on robot with speakers to barely clothed whatever they want to call themselves. There weren't just superheroes here. There were also food trucks and Burning Man apparel. It seemed like people who came back from Burning Man just wanted another excuse to party and reuse their outfits from the Playa. Now that it's a bit more mainstream I can see more things like this becoming the norm. Not that that's a bad thing. As a Burning Man virgin who doesn't have much interest in sweating out in the dessert while building something beautiful, I admire their ability to bring people together to have fun with no judgment.

For an event space, it's probably not the most ideal, but they made it work for a small, intimate crowd this past Saturday night. It's just really cozy, if you're comfortable with that. Plus it's confusing to find. The location seems really isolated, and you need to get buzzed in to what seems like an industrial building, then find the studio entrance down the hall on the 2nd floor. The lighting and decor inside are amazing, and looking upon the photos on the wall, and the props all around, I can tell they have the ability/potential to do really great photography and events here. They even have a vertical pole right at the front center of the stage, and plenty of equipment hung from the ceiling on stage to do aerial performances. The staff for the event we attended was friendly for sure, but seemed a little less professional, and things didn't seem as organized as I would expect. But it wasn't a problem for us, just an observation. It was almost like organized chaos. Exposed and jumbled cables and wires along the ceiling and walls, a sound system that's less than ideal, a substandard concessions bar for event guests, just a quirky vibe overall. But a successful show, enjoyable for guests... it's like things are meant to be imperfect and perhaps a little "messy". And since Little Boxes Theater hosts a number of workshops and productions in the creative arts, perhaps that's what makes it unique.

We have been holding flagging events at Little Boxes for over a year, and the owners Kitty and Aaron have been a pleasure to work with! We have had a number of odd requests, and they always listen carefully and do their best to cheerfully accommodate us (or explain why they can't - very rare!) They say on their website that they "...encourage inclusivity & nourish diversity of race, class, cultural heritage, artistic expression, ability, age, gender identity, sexual orientation and everyone exactly how they are and choose to be as they move through life." My experience is that this is not just words to them - they actually walk the walk. Ok, so not too long ago I got home from my very first lesson at Zaccho and I am in LOVE. Before the class began, I knew I would be calling this place home. I want to start off by saying that I thought the Aerial Dance class for adults was going to be taught only on hoop and tissue. Traditionally speaking, one would think, right? To start, you get to play on single point apparatuses which include rope, tissue, trapeze, ladder, and something called a "window." For the love of God, I hope I got those names right. Someone, please feel free to correct me if I am wrong. Furthermore, the instructor is very sweet and patient. She made me feel very comfortable and safe. And for any money conscientious person, this place far exceeded my expectation for the price. Anywhere else this class could easily be $45 if not more. I am still on ecstasy from the class. [sigh]
