I have never met a bad Ben. Yes, it would be easy to think I'm a little biased, but to that I say Au contraire, mon ami -- it actually means that I'm a very hard marker on any namesake I run across. And Ben that manages the Beachcomber is the duck's nuts, he is deadset the friendliest, most helpful bloke in the southern hemisphere. Nothing we asked was too much trouble. He paused when I asked him for a back rub, but to his credit sucked it up and got on with it.
The resort has a motel-type feel but it's all spotlessly clean, and the pool and spa, while not getting the most sun in the world, are cracking to kick back in. With a beer. And some Playmates, if you can get them.
The real winner here? The sneaky little sand track across the disused railway lines through a short stretch of bush to the beach. Felt exactly like I was in Stand By Me. I freaking love that movie. read more
